    Sunday Morning Stout
    [IMG]
12.7 ABV % Stout from Weyerbacher

Body pours a deep black with a good initial head. During my tasting, no lacing.

Nose featured the bourbon barrel and coffee. Major bourbon aroma. Good!

Taste follows nose as the barrel dominates. Adding to the taste is coffee and a bit of malty char that’s a welcome addition to the barrel, keeping the beer from being a one trick pony. The barrel, though prominent, never becomes sweet.

Carbonation was minimal and mouthfeel was lighter than expected based on my presumption given its barrel aging.

A very good stout that I should have tried years ago.

    Hey, all,
I'll be hitting a new beer from @Rub_This_BBQ, but I'm not sure when. I'm about to head out to Fairchild AFB for their airshow. Looking forward to watching one of the world's only two flying B-29s and (hopefully) seeing the Thunderbirds do their thing (they had to cancel their flight yesterday due to low cloud cover).

Goldfinger/Niteglow/Sugar Creek Malt Co. Czech-Style Dark Lager. The description from Goldfinger:
Much like the resurrection of our own Downers Grove brewery whose roots are from a bygone era in brewing in Europe, Sugar Creek resurrected a previously defunct barley that was once popular before WWII. Fortuitously, this type of barley thrives in climates very similar to the climate of Sugar Creek’s Indiana farm, allowing Caleb to grow a crop from a few hundred grams to enough to supply only 8 breweries across the country. We are honored to have been selected as one of these breweries and to be the only one to use this malt in a dark lager.

Soft water, triple decocted, Czech Saaz hopped, naturally carbonated, and lagered for over two months. This beer is only 4.3% abv, extremely delicate and light, but presents wonderful roasted malt and spicy hop character.

    __________________________________________________________________________
Pours a dark brown color with a ruby red hue that produces a two-finger dense tan head that dissipates slowly, leaving some nice glass lacing behind.

Aroma is dark brown bread, some caramel, some toasted malt, slight nuttiness, some black pepper, grass.

Taste brings much of what the aroma indicated. Dark brown bread, some rye bread, toasted malt, cocoa powder, coffee bean, some caramel, slight nuttiness, some grassy, black peppery spice hop character. Nice depth of malt character for only 4.3% thanks to the triple decoction.

Light medium body. Ample carbonation, soft, dry, clean.

This is an outstanding Czech dark lager that delivers on drinkability and complexity. Wouldn't expect anything less from Goldfinger.

Deep, dark brown body, clear; thick head; light tan color; rich and foamy. Sweet, alluring nose; bold and pleasant mix of vanilla and cocoa. The taste reinforces the vanilla and cocoa notes; full sweetness; mild booziness. Heavy body; smooth and silky; slippery residual sugars.

Generally a good beer although a bit overpowering with the sweet flavors.

Since it’s a fairly local small brewer, I wasn’t going to post this one, but I found the reviewing of it interesting in and of itself, I decided to add it to this thread:

Vibrissa Above the Fold IPA with Idaho 7, El Dorado, and Sabro hops.

What made it interesting is the I noted qualities in the beer that I experience from each of the mentioned hops. That usually means I will like a beer, but in this case I grabbed it because I like the brewer and the GF likes IPAs, without paying much attention to the hops.

I rated it highly on nose, because “delving in I get a tropical fruit skin bittersweet along with some of the candied orange from the El Dorado. Grass and a hint of coconut play at the edges - an odd case where I am sensing in the aroma what I expected from the hops. It isn’t my favorite profile, but I can’t argue I should expect different.”

    Taste I dropped, because although:
“in my face is the grapefruit pith (??) and late summer grass (expected from Idaho 7) that gains a zested orange (El Dorado) and papaya (El Dorado / Sabro?), with a tropical fruit skin bitterness backing it (maybe the Idaho 7 coming back in).”

This bitter profile lacked some malty sweetness to perhaps allow the tropical notes to provide a counter to the bitterness. Turned out to be a beer that, for me, the sum dropped below to component parts.

Canned 3.16, best by 7.16, opened 5.15 , poured into a new glarus pokal produces a frothy off white two finger foam cap over a clear golden liquid with occasional laconic carbonation bubbles

Brewers Notes: Our 12-year anniversary beer, Dvanáctka - Czech Pale Lager, is a love letter to all things Czech pale lager. A six-hour triple decoction with Czech floor malted barley, two-hour wort boil, Sládek hops, open fermentation, natural carbonation, and extended maturation in horizontal layering tanks. for 12 years of session beer.

Aroma is grassy, malty..the grassiness is dominant

Taste is grassy, malty, biscuity, peppery spice , the pepper finishes the taste

Good sudsing, clean , crisp, refreshing , semi dry with the peppery finish

Good beer, recommended for the style

Civil Society, no doubt - especially for New England IPA fans.

If in the WPB area and willing to drive, I'd personally prefer to take the trip to Funky Buddha. JWB and MIA are a little out of the way from WPB, unless you're on a true beercation and don't mind the drive, or if you're just in the mood to hit up a bunch of breweries. :grinning:

Boynton Beach (Palm Beach County) has a brewery park area with a number of decent breweries right together. Our favorite of the lot is probably Copper Top.

Accidentally hit post on a draft, then my wifi stopped talking to my Chromebook, phone would not allow me to put the post on "edit". Panic..... reboot router. Back in business.
Today I have Tractor Beam from High Nine, an 8.3% NEIPA with Galaxy, Vic and "light handed doses" of Citra and Mosaic.
Poured from a 16oz can stamped “04/08/22” to a Nonic at fridge temp.
A bright white 1/2-inch head. The body is a medium gold and opaque hazy.
The aroma is of melon and hops.
The taste is pineapple and peach. Alcohol is noticeable on the taste, but not overwhelming.
The mouthfeel is medium for an NEIPA..
Pretty good. Nice to see this brewery broadening their variety. They produce some good quality beers, but they had seemed to be stuck in a rut of only 5-6 beers in rotation

I’m starting this afternoon with a Czech-style Dark Lager from Minnesota brewer Utepils. They are one of the top lager brewers in the state, so I am really looking forward to this one. The only caveat is that this is a winter seasonal for them, so the beer is 22 weeks from the canning date stamped on the bottom of the can. I applaud them for dating their beer (unlike the OEC beer I had yesterday).

    IBU: 42

Moderately strong aroma starts with dark bread, dark malts, dark chocolate, hints of dark fruit.

Appearance is dark (I’ve now used that word 5 times in less than 20 words… what are the synonyms of “dark”? Opening the Thesaurus …) with a backlight revealing clear deep ruby with ample carbonation. The head is ¾ inch off-white with adequate retention and no lacing as it recedes.

The flavor starts with the caliginous  bread and then toasty malts. Subtle chocolate (emphasis on subtle) complemented by tenebrous  fruits. Quite nice. The middle almost gives a bit of bitterness, but it is actually more of the toasted/roasted malts reminiscent of a porter-like flavor. The finish is nicely balanced with an overall dry effect. The aftertaste has the toasted stygian :smirk: bread and fruity hops lingering in my mouth. (OK. I’ll close the thesaurus now…)

The mouth feel is smooth and the body is moderate-thin, resulting in great drinkability. Decent carbonation adds to the feel.

Overall, an excellent dark lager. The overall package is (as I stated above) almost porter-like.

Ozark Beer Co. El Tio Mexican Style Lager, 5.0% ABV; 3.77 overall

Pours a bright effervescent gold with a thumb of eggshell colored head. Average head retention & lacing

    S: Sweetness & breadyness

T: Sweetness, lime, a touch of grassiness up front, plus a little dryness. Sweetness & lime with a little grassiness once warm. Finishes sweet, a little dry with a kiss of lime

MF: Medium body, crisp carbonation, pretty good balance

One of the more drinkable takes on this style, they say it has a little bit of corn & that may be its saving grace. Perfect beer for this time of year & outdoor fun

I had a Civil Society tap at dinner last night, and it was really good (Fresh IPA). We went to JWB last year when we stayed in Doral and I purchased a bunch of their stuff to mule home.

Mrs O was NOT a fan of the location, so I don’t see JWB in my immediate future!

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Swiggers and commentators. It's the first glorious Spring Sunday here in North Jersey with the temperature hitting 80°. This weekend marks the 7th anniversary of Magnify Brewing Co. Magnify was the first really good nearby local-to-me brewery and it has a warm place in my liver. Each year, Mag releases a new IPA, as well as re-releasing a couple of its prior anniversary brews. Today, I'm reviewing "7." This one's hopped with Strata, Bru-1, Sabro, Mosaic, Galaxy and Citra Cryo. Strata and Sabro can be a bit controversial so if you don't like them you'd probably disagree with my rating but that's okay.

Reviewed 5 days after canning. Poured into a tulip glass (my 6-year-old OG Magnify glass only used now for special occasions). It pours an opaque orange-apricot color with a finger of creamy, eggnog-colored head and thick, clinging lacing. The nose is fruity and fragrant with lots of lemon, pineapple, melon, onion, bubblegum, and a bready malt base. It's taste is big and bold with tart lemon and grapefruit balanced against melon sweeter citrus and stone fruit. The Mosaic and Galaxy hops provide a lot of different flavors. As expected, the strong use of Strata contributes lots of grassy, herbal cannabis notes while the Sabro adds an earthy, cedar flavor. It's super dank. If you like these hops you'll really like this ale! The mouthfeel is surprisingly lite and crisp for the 10% ABV; it's extremely drinkable for the high gravity. Overall, the rating on this TIPA will vary based on whether the reviewer likes Strata and Sabro hops. They are used very well in 7. It's a fitting release for the 7th anniversary of one of my favorite breweries.

I'm breaking out a lager today from Wisconsin. Two Women Lager to be exact.

It's a decent lager, clean and not over powering in terms of floral and perfume scents.

    Until next time,

Pours an effervescent chestnut/cola color with very little head. Zero head retention & lacing, viscous

S: Port barrels, figs, plums, caramelized brown sugar. Red wine/port once warm

T: Dark chocolate, figs, raisins, brown sugar, treacle, a kiss of vanilla & candied prunes upfront, a little bit of leafy hops & oaky dryness as well. Sweet red grapes, leafy hops & oaky dryness, plus figs & raisins as this warms up, a treacle & touch of leather as well. Finishes dry with a little leather, port notes, & figs

MF: Fairly chewy, restrained carbonation, warming. Carbonation picks up a little once this warms
