There is spirited discussion in a thread within the Northeast Forum about a business soon to open: Sacred Profane.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/sacred-profane-brewing-launching-summer-2022.665446/

Two of the co-owners of Sacred Profane are Brienne Allen and Mike Fava (plus apparently two others). From the OP of the above linked thread:

“Brienne Allan (Notch) and Mike Fava (Oxbow) opening Czech inspired "Tank Pub" in Biddeford Maine this summer. You can hear more about it on the latest interview on Good Beer Hunting. Sounds like they'll only be serving two lagers on draft and oysters.”

From a podcast that Brienne Allen conducted I gather that the two brands that will be served will be a Bohemian Pilsner (Czech Pale Lager) and a Czech Dark Lager.

I started this thread in the Beer Talk forum to further a more wide-ranging discussion about this business concept being implemented here:

Are there any other breweries (e.g., taprooms) in America which only serve two brands of beer?

As a BA, would you find going to a business that only serves two brands of beer attractive?

Needless to say but any other thoughts about this sort of business strategy would be welcome. Perhaps Sacred Profane will launch other businesses (i.e., breweries) to do something similar?

    Cheers!

I have been to McSorley's in New York before, they famously only have two beers on tap.

Several of my favorite pubs in Aberdeen, Scotland only had one or two beers on cask. That was it, outside of Whisky's. The Grill comes to mind, only had Bitter and Twisted from Harviestoun, another only had two hand pumps. Both Orkeny Dark Island. Neither bar were tied houses either, just what they offered. I'll take both of those please

I'll definitely visit this spot if I can, sounds awesome to me.

I too would enjoy a visit.

Would this sort of place/business be a regular for you? Would you purposefully choose to regularly go to a business like Sacred Profane vs. visiting a craft brewery taproom (e.g., a dozen+ brands on tap)?

    Cheers!

first, yes I would personally be interested in visiting a place like this. And if the whole experience was good (beer, food, atmosphere, etc) it would certainly be a regular visit for me.

Second, it doesn't sound like this model is targeting the "ba crowd" so to speak. It sounds like they are trying to create a dining/drinking experience that is more about making a space for socialization than some sort of hyped beer nerd mecca. To that point, I've been to many restaurants/cafes that only offer the same one or two beers on tap. It may seem weird if you think of it as a brewery but it's not that odd if you think of it as a restaurant

I think, like all things it depends. If I love the atmosphere, service, food (looks like they will have some "classic") etc, definitely. If they play a bunch of crappy music too loud, in a generic industrial like building, maybe not. Though, I have no problem going to old reliable's, over the shinny new thing.

I myself, am most down with this.
As are, I'm sure, other grown ups who want to drink well made lagers.

They'll lose out on the two and done crowd; the folks who need to tick off beers to earn badges after they've had the 2 beers up. That's fine, I'll have an easier time getting a seat.

Your experience(s) here are very different from mine. I can't remember a single occurrence where I went to a restaurant (or other eating establishment) that only had one or two beers to offer me to drink with my meal.

Just goes to show that where you are in America can yield very varying experiences?

    Cheers!

Hell yeah. I wish most bars sold only a Bohemian Pils and a Czech Dark Lager.

Nope - depending upon the weather, my mood, and what I am eating (if anything) I will have specific styles in mind. It is extremely unlikely that an offering of only 2 beers is going to match up with what I have in mind very often.

Well, for the specific example of Sacred Profane I believe you have little (no) risk concerning crappy music, etc.

I too would visit a place like Sacred Profane as much as I can which in reality would be very few visits since my wife strongly prefers a variety of beer choices (especially hoppy beers like IPAs). On a somewhat related matter, yesterday I was invited to a barbecue party (Memorial Day Weekend event) hosted by a friend (Art) I went to college with. My contribution was to bring a bunch of homebrewed beer: Oatmeal Stout, English Brown Ale, Altbier, Harvest Ale (Wet hopped APA), Belgian Dubbel, and Bohemian Pilsner. I put a Beer Menu on the top of the cooler's lid. As I was serving beer to others Art's wife, who couldn't be bothered to read the menu, requested an IPA. I just sorta shrugged my shoulders and said "I'm sorry, I didn't bring any IPAs". The look on her face was priceless. Later in the evening I was able to convince her to give the Harvest Ale a try since it was an APA and thereby hoppy (but needless to say not IPA hoppy). She only accepted a small pour (about 4-5 ounces?) and she had a look of frustration on her face as she sipped it. Keeping every beer consumer happy is indeed a challenging pursuit. :flushed:

    Cheers!

P.S. For completeness I should relate I did recently brew an IPA but that beer is just a week+ in the bottle conditioning phase and therefore not ready to drink yet.

You're never in the mood for pilsner or a dark lager?

It’s more likely that he’s saying his mood will yield desire for more than two types of beer, which I feel like probably lines up with many peoples desire when visiting a tap room. Hence flights of 4 or 5 beers.

I wouldn’t mind visiting this brewery because of the theme and the beers being brewed and the background of the brewers. With that being said, my willingness to visit a tap house with only 2 beers is very dependent on the beers being brewed. I.E. I would more than likely not be interested in visiting a brewery serving only an NEIPA and an Oatmeal stout. Not because I don’t like those styles, but because there’s a hundred other breweries I can go to that serve both of these styles in abundance beyond just two types at a time. Cheers.

I think this saying of less is more only applies to lingerie.

Like me, I don't think he means never, just not always.

My new favorite local has a nice mix of styles that make me happy to go there with no mindset and let me follow my mood at the time -- whether it's a Pils or English Ale.

All that said, I could probably live just fine with the selection in Munich or Prague, but I'd probably be craving a good Northwest hop hit before too long.

The more unusual thing in my experience is the lack of an ipa.

I wonder if your experience is because of regional differences or because of the choices you make about what places to visit? The local places I can think of off hand that have scant beer options are a Cafe that has 4 taps, 2 beers, a kombucha, and a cider/seltzer and a cocktail bar/tapas place that has two tips. There are also a number of SE Asian and Mexican places that have very limited beer menus

Don't get me wrong, I like trying new things as well. I wouldn't participate in the New Beer Weekend thread otherwise. I also really appreciate if a brewery can have a diverse and well made tap list. Though, some of my favorite places to sit and have a beer anywhere, have a very limited selection. As I mentioned above.

To further illustrate that, I went to the brand new BrewDog pub in Aberdeen (when it first opened) and they had a seemingly never ending list of both their beers and American craft beers. I went once, and never wanted to go back. I still wish I could go to some of the other spots like The Grill though.

In your dreams buddy, more likely (if only 2) a couple AALs
I could totally get on board with this, but practically speaking for the brewer think there needs to be at least 6 (8?) styles but only 2 at one time

Tanglefoot (TX) might be of interest, assuming they are in your vicinity. They are a Czech based operation with four offerings on sidepull: opened up about a year ago

Never been, another place I would love to check out. I'm in Houston, so it might be a 3-4 hour drive. Doable if I want to make a long weekend of it, just got to make time ha, but it is on my radar.
