    Upon the flourishing field of locked 2022 threads, I noticed in last year's Rev thread started by @GuyFawkes he mentioning having a Ryeway to Heaven. Coincidentally enough, I happen to have a Ryeway to Heaven poured right now so perhaps it will become a tradition for the yearly thread. As a slight aside, it may not have the glory or hype as some of the other beers in the Deep Wood series (I see you Double Berry Vanilla Spiced Orange Jacket) but it does the work. Outstanding beer.

    Ok, let's get the formalities out of the way.

    Brewery & Taproom location -> 3340 N. Kedzie Ave Chicago, IL 60618
    Brewpub & Kitchen location -> 2323 N. Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL 60647
    Brewery Website -> https://revbrew.com/
    Facebook -> https://www.facebook.com/RevBrewChicago

    Beer Finder -> https://revbrew.com/beer/find
    BA Listing -> https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22072/

    Where can I purchase their beers? They are distributed all over Chicagoland & Illinois, as well as many other states. Even their Deep Wood series, depending on the beer, can typically be found in states such as Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts and Tennessee.
    Is it pronounced Death's Tar or Deeth's Tar? Yes.
    Can I purchase their beer at the brewery? Do you have a draft list of their beers? You can see both a current draft list as well as beer to go for both locations. Brewery & Taproom (link) and the Brewpub (link).
    Awesome, they seem like a cool brewery. Yes, indeed. I mean they do not have an army of Fanboy FUPA Gods for no reason.
    Wow. Anything else I should know for 2023? No, not really. Others will post as needed. The last Deep Wood release of the season will occur in January 2023. To quote a wise philosopher of baseball, sit down, relax and strap it down.

    Thanks for opening this year’s thread @Jaycase and nice beer selections for you and GuyFawkes/Charlie to open the annual threads with. It’s always been my favorite annual DW release, though I also love all the others.

    I realize most of the conversation in this thread revolves around their awesome Deep Woods program, but would like to highly recommend their new lager which I hope becomes a permanent fixture (Cold Time). Their taproom manager Dylan said it’s getting great feedback both internally and via customers on their brewery tours. Excellent full flavor, light and easy drinking, definitely worth trying on your next visit.

    I also really enjoyed their dank IPA Legal Hero Rev released on NYD 2020, and I’m glad it’s returned for 2023. Will be ordering next visit.

    Join us for the final release of our epic 2022-2023 Deep Wood Series season. We saved some of the best for last. Online pre-sales will open at 9 am CST on Tuesday, January 17th.

    Boss Ryeway This velveteen Ryewine was aged for 15 months in WhistlePig The Boss Hog VIII: LapuLapu's Pacific barrels. These beautifully crafted French oak casks were originally used to age single-island Philippine rum before finishing one of the most sought-after rye whiskeys in the world. Notes of dark sugar, spice, and oak intertwine with subtle expressions of tropical fruits and rich spirit ($40 per four-pack, limit 2).

    D.B.V.S.O.J. Double Barrel Very Special Old Jacket is a cuvée of barrel-aged English Barleywines aged between one and three years before blending and rebarreling in Templeton Rye barrels for an additional eighteen months. This years-long maturation results in harmonic malt complexity and uncharted depths of flavor. A smattering of French oak casks provides a barrel expression as broad as it is intense. The absolute pinnacle of our Barleywine journey to date ($60 per four-pack, limit 2).

    You known how in corporate America when a stock price gets too high they split the stock to make it more affordable? Maybe it’s time to split the 4 pack. I’m happy to buy a two pack for $30, but spending $60 bucks for it pushes me into better opportunity cost ares. The first beer will be delicious. The next 3 will have hints of bittterness.

    I thought SJ was always Bourbon BAed. Am I mistaken, or did they (for some reason?) just decide that they didn't want to list that this was Bourbon --> Rye ?

    I'll be honest, This sounds delicious, but I'm not super interested in the Rye BA. I just don't really tend to like Rye BA much, and hence one reason why Ryeway to heaven isn't my thing. As @HouseofWortship said, I'd be more interested in this as a 2-pack, especially/specifically given the $15/can price point. My days of buying just to trade are over. I know @ShawnoftheD3ad and @flat_lander will be all over this like a dog on peanut butter.

    I assumed it meant the BW was bourbon barrel aged for 1-3 years and then switched to rye barrels for an unspecified amount of time. Which would make sense, given that they are calling it Double Barrel.

    But then they talk about French oak (a la Mineshaft Gap?), and they don't actually mention bourbon barrels, so who knows?

    Leave my dog and my rye kink out of this you heathen.

    And yes, my understanding has always been that SJ is bourbon barrel aged.

    Yeah - we discussed that today comparing it a bit to Benthic, which has 4pks of regular for $50 at the brewery, and 2pks of variants for $30. It would certainly lead to additional orders for them to handle, but would allow more folks to enjoy the beers.

    I'd bet the farm both 4 packs will sell out in less than a day, so there's no real reason for them to make extra work (not to mention packaging) by breaking them up.

    If I'm wrong and they sit for a few weeks, who knows...

    I'll be surprised if DBVSOJ lasts more than an hour or two. Proxies allowed, two 4 pack limit, and a number of them sold ahead via season ticket.

    Definitely excited about the reveal that this has a rye barrel addition to it. Intriguing approach. Are there other DB barleywines to note that have done bourbon then rye? I can't think of any I've had, although I'm sure they exist.

    I wouldn’t expect them to do it this go around as they’ve already packaged them. That being said, sure they can probably sell them out, but do you want to risk alienating loyal customers who aren’t willing to pay $60 for a 4 pack of beer or do you want to keep your beers at an accessible price point to keep fans buying? You lose me at $60, you also lose a lot of other Rev beers From deep woods to hero series 12 packs I purchase through out the year.

    First, I highly doubt they are going to alienate many people with this ... like, it might just be you.

    Second, I think Rev has bent over backwards to an almost crazy degree to keep their beers at an accessible price point. Deth's Tar is still $25 a 4-pack ... what other high quality BA beer is still $25 for 48 ounces? We all knew that this beer was going to be their most expensive ... and it is. But like @BeerCruncher has pointed out in the past - they don't spread cost out over all the beers, that's how they keep the other beers cheaper - the flip side is that these more complex and limited beers are going to be more expensive.

    My guess? It's completely sold out by noon on Tuesday.

    I get what you're saying, it's the most expensive price point for a DW beer we've seen. But at $1.25/oz or basically a $30 bomber, this doesn't phase me and is still really reasonable for a DB aged beer. And I'm quoting myself from another thread here, but I've bought WAY dumber beers for more money before. Everyone has their line though. Maybe split the 4 pack with your actual BA persona since this is your burner account?

    Anyone recall what the boxed 22 oz BA beers from years ago ran?

    Mean Gene was the cheapest at $10 or $12 if I remember correctly. Most were $15 out of the taproom.
