Pulling some more fun numbers from the spreadsheet:

    Favorite style totals:
English Barleywines: 23 (5.1% of my reviews)
American Barleywines: 20 (4.4% of my reviews)
Imperial Stouts: 84 (18.6% of my reviews)
NE IPAs: 56 (12.4% of my reviews)

    Favorite Local Breweries:
    BKS Artisan Ales: 43
    Alma Mader: 37
    Pathlight Brewing: 5

BKS Artisan Ales accounted for 22.5% of my total MO beer consumption. Alma Mader provided 19.4% of my MO 2023 'ticks'. I know there are another half dozen or more BKS beers in my notes, yet to be reviewed too. Pathlight accounted for 5 of 23, or 2.6%, of my KS beers, and I've still yet to write reviews on the Black Friday stout series they dropped.

A 2022 goal was to have BKS be my most-reviewed brewery, and it has surpassed Boulevard Brewing Co. (105) to hit 114 reviews. Alma Mader Brewing sits in third with 91, and then a steep drop to Side Project Brewing at 54.

In 2022 I rated/reviewed 245 beers on BA give or take a few (some re-visits) and drink on average 3 beers per day, give or take a few. There are some days and or weeks where drinking alcohol is/was not possible. I truly enjoy throwin' back some Session Ales. I do not count every beer I drink nor do I give free time w friends and beer any thought. That would defeat the purpose.

I have yet to take a tour but some buddies visited Yuengling Brewery and enjoyed it. When they went, they took them into the old lagering caves they used 'back in the day' (1800's).

408 new beers that I kept track of. Only God knows how many actual beers and calories I have consumed. There came from 54 different locations, mostly in the Nebraska/Kansas area. It was a good year, but I am hoping to beat it this year. Need to start planning some brewery tours soon.

I work for the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and like @The_Kriek_Freak I keep an embarrassingly detailed spreadsheet tracking all things beer... It's 555am here right now and I'm about to drive ten hours to the father-in-law's beach house so am responding here as a placeholder. I'm gonna seriously nerd out in this thread in the next few days!

    Cheers!

Embarrassing level of detail to follow:

No TV and no beer make Az something something...
    • Total: 307
    • Different beers: 285
    • Average drinks per week: 5.87
    • Most beers drunk in a week: 19. Hey, I was on holiday in Cairns!
    • Average volume drunk per week: 2.185l, for a total of 114.23l of beer drunk in the year. That puts me above the average drinker in every country in the world bar the Czech Republic (140l each, according to Wikipedia), but probably in the bottom decile on this site!
    • Only one beer drunk four times or more (not counting homebrew or low alc/NA beers): NEIPA by West City Brewing in Melbourne.
    • Highest rated:
      • Trappist Westvletern XII by Brouwerij Saint Sixtusabdij van Wesvleteren, Belgium - 4.7 on BA and 4.75 on Untappd.
      • Gonzo Imperial Porter by Flying Dog Brewery, USA - 4.59 on BA and 4.75 on Untappd.
      • Fuller's Golden Pride by Fullers Brewery, England. - 4.54 on BA, 4.5 on Untappd.
      • NEIPA by Kosmos, Australia - 4.5 on BA and Untappd.
      • Avec les bons Voeux by Brasserie Dupont, Belgium - 4.49 on BA, 4.5 on Untappd.
It's all about the style, baby.
    • Number of styles drunk (using Untappd style as they're more granular): 93
    • Most drunk styles
      • Pale Ale - Australian 24 (8%)
      • Lager - Pale 23 (7%)
      • IPA - New England/Hazy 18 (6%)
      • IPA - American 13 (4%)
      • Farmhouse Ale - Saison 12 (4%)

Does your dad own a brewery?

      • Mountain Culture Beer Co. (NSW) - 5
    • Non-Australian breweries:
      • Uiltje Brewing Company (Netherlands) - 4
      • La Debauche (France) - 4

      • The Veil Brewing Co. (Va, USA) - 3

To alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.
    • Standard drinks consumed: 551.78. In Australia, a standard drink in beer form is 285ml of 4.8% ABV (eg., the classic pot of VB or Toohey's New for those wondering), or 375ml of 3.5% ABV (eg., Australia's top-selling beer - Great Northern). The formula is: ABV*(size in mls/1000)*0.789. A 12oz can of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale would be 1.57 standard drinks.
    • Average standard drinks per week: 10.58. The Australian healthy drinking guidelines recommend no more than 10 standard drinks a week. I'm not statistically significant over the guideline so I give myself a conceded pass there...
    • Most common ABV: 58 beers between 4.51 and 5% ABV.
    • Beers over 10% ABV: 16.
    • Strongest beer: 14.5% ABV - Mind Your Step! Vanilla Marshmallow Edition by Uiltje Brewing Company, Netherlands.
The more we reduce the size of the world, the more we shall be its master.
    • Countries visited through their beer: 28
    • Most visited:
      • Australia - 160
      • Belgium - 41 (28% of all non-Australian beers)
      • USA - 40 (27%)
      • Germany - 19 (13%)
      • England - 9 (6%)
      • Netherlands - 7 (5%)
"A great city is not to be confounded with a populous one." - Aristotle.
    • Cities I drank in: 17
    • Most common city/town to drink in:
      • Geelong, Vic - 258 (84%)
      • Cairns, Qld - 17 (6%)
      • Malua Bay, NSW - 7 (2%)
      • Whitfield, Vic - 5 (2%)
      • Casterton, Vic - 4 (1%)
    Wherever I lay my hat...
    • Places I consumed my beer: 44.
    • Where my butt most often found itself:
      • Home - 173 (56%)
      • The Old Man's place - 59 (19%)
      • Local Greek restaurant - 6 (2%)
      • Fathers-in-law's (check out WBAYDN 3733!) - 5 (2%)
      • GMHBA Stadium (home of the mighty Geelong Football Club) - 5 (2%).

    Show me the MONEY!!!!
    • What did all this cost? $1882.62AUD (~$1300USD)
    • Average spend per beer (only counting ones I paid for): $9.14AUD (~$6.31USD).
    • Most expensive beer: Trappist Westvletern XII - $55AUD (~$38USD) for 330ml. This is 16c per ml.
Where did all this beer come from?
    • The vast majority come from my fridge. A beer spent on average 110 days in my fridge before I got around to drinking it. I have a collecting problem, rather than a drinking one!
    • The oldest beer I drank: Rye Barrell Vanilla Stout by Brewery Ommegang had spent 332 days in my fridge before I drank it on 31 December. I've since broken that record in 2023...
So there you have it, unnecessarily detailed, overly long and terribly gratuitous, but I enjoyed reminiscing as I collated my year in beer!

I've already added more categories to track in 2023...

    Cheers!

    Well done!

I was going to ask why you rarely drink a beer more than once (285 different / 307 total) until I reached the section regarding your father’s brewery, the number of breweries brewing your beer and the fact you home brew.

    Cheers!

Just to clarify, my dad doesn't own a brewery. That's a line from a reasonably famous Australian song about an uncouth bloke trying his luck with the ladies. I just thought it was an appropriate title for the section talking about breweries. Probably should've used some context in hindsight!

And no breweries brew my beer. That was more creative writing on my part with no context that, again in hindsight, was always going to confuse people! I was simply referring the breweries that brew the beer I drink.

    I do homebrew, though...

As for your original question about why I rarely drink beer more than once, it's likely related to the one bit of honest self-reflection in the piece: I have a collecting problem. I simply can't resist buying beer, and in Australia it's perfectly normal to open a six pack in a store's fridge, take one out, buy it, and leave the other five behind. Hence we easily accumulate singles.

Hopefully that clears things up. Sorry for the confusion!

    Cheers!

Thanks for the clarification and explanation.

I buy single offerings for the New Beer Weekend / Sunday threads and BA style tastings. The only times I try new beer on weekdays are visits to breweries or bars. I finally reached zero new to me beers last year, and have since kept my goal of keeping 4-8 new to me beers on hand on a go forward basis to maximize freshness.

I still have over 200 beers on hand (need to complete my 2022 spreadsheet updates for an exact count), nearly all beers I’ve enjoyed in the past that I love. Want to get to 40-60 on hand by the end of 2024 (2023 was my January 2021 target), but I have still made substantial progress over my max 443 count in January 2021, when I took inventory and decided to cut back from enjoying two beers a day at home to one.

With your review of 2022 data, are you perhaps considering:
    • Reducing the number of new beers on hand by the end of 2023 from the approximate 110 or so you may have now?
    • Buying more 4-6 packs of your absolute favorites as time goes on, to enjoy the fruits of your collecting, exploring and beer rating efforts?

I thought I had a beer-collecting problem! My maximum beer count sat at 120 as of Christmas day last year. I'd gotten it down to about the high 50s earlier in the year but then the urge to buy took over again. Stupid urges!

Reducing the beers in my fridge has been my goal for a while now, but it clashes head-on with the problem I expressed earlier! I actually want to support my local breweries and buy the six packs of favourites as you mention, but I can never justify the trip out to the breweries and nor can I justify buying six more of something at the moment with all the beer sitting in my fridge. First world problems and all, but the struggle is real!

My biggest problem after my collecting one is that I have some weird OCD need to buy and drink the beers that I read about in beer books. I made a thread about it a few years back asking if anyone else does the same. Seems I'm the only freak doing it. I'm not an obsessive ticker - I don't have to always drink new beers - but again, reducing my fridge and not just buying singles clashes with my desire to drink all the beers in 1001 Beers You Must Drink Before You Die, and all the other books on my shelf... More first world problems!

    Cheers!
