Karma System Revamp Update Log

ICYMI: I recently announced that a revamp of the entire Beer(Advocate) Karma system was coming. This involves using our forum's achievement system, and then extending it to other member stats (beers, places, etc.). The goal is to make it more fun, engaging, transparent, and efficient. It also prepares us for future forum upgrades, wherein the achievement system has been greatly enhanced.

Today, the revamp has begun! I'm going to use this thread as a read-only change/progress log, but you can discuss here: Heads Up: Karma System Revamp!

Updates:

• Disabled the old hourly beer karma cron job (save resources).
• Reset everyone's points to zero (points will be recalculated overtime using the new system).
• Temporarily disabled user titles, displaying points, and stats on profiles (this will come back when the new system as been enabled).

Based on some great feedback from many of you, I've disabled the system (no points/user titles are currently being displayed) and will be making adjustments to numerous achievements. I'll drop another update early this week, but the forthcoming update will require another reset and the application of achievements in multiple batches again.

Spent the day working on the core criteria progression that'll be applied to levels for most categories. Mods who've chimed in so far approve. Basically, we're going to have more levels with a better incremental flow and points that match without going too crazy.

I'll be working on point progression next, followed by possibly adding some new stats and achievements.

 

Updates:

• Finalizing the new point progression.
• Added a new stat to track how many forum threads you've started, plus related achievements.
• Updated stats to better support your beer and place ratings, to give those who don't review more love.

 

Updates:

• After several rounds of tweaks, criteria and point progression adjustments are looking solid.
• Tested new stats and achievement criteria over the weekend.
• If all goes well, I'll start loading achievements sometime this week.

 

I've started loading over 300 achievements. I'll be doing these in batches today to avoid overwhelming the system and alert feeds, and the system will start awarding karma hourly (every 40 mins after the hour) for recently active users or sooner based on the achievement criteria.

For this round, I've added some achievements for accounts, beers, places, and forums so no one feels left out.

Update: Took some time to think about the ratings/reviews feedback.

• Reverted the ratings/reviews update from earlier this month + updated user stats and associated pages
• Those who review will now be able to achieve both Beer/Place Rater and Beer/Place Reviewer achievements (enjoy your extra karma)
• No other changes

• I was hoping to apply user titles today, but it's getting late, and I want to review everything one last time, so I'll handle it tomorrow
• I'll also be applying new user upgrades tomorrow
