Yeah, that is a bit a drive and a painful one from where you would be coming from. :frowning2:

    Steve,
I'll reevaluate in the near future with your perspective in mind.
    Cheers!

I just received a photo of the beer menu of Brauhaus Schmitz (in Philly):

By my reckoning there are over 10 Bock beers on tap.

Boy, I wish I was there. :flushed:

But maybe it is a good thing since with all of those great beers available I might get myself into a bit of trouble!?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Prost!

The name rolls right off this English-speaking tongue.

Enjoyed this one. Nice malty sweetness which grew more appealing as the beer warmed. Never had a beer from Croatia so that's something I guess.

I believe that is correct. Many of our most highly regarded beer styles clearly have supernatural origins.

[I'm joking, if it's not obvious. I refuse to use those little face graphic thingies, which are evidently intended to communicate "tone".]

I also saw those reviews. Greek Witch might be the most awesome beer name ever.

Dude, don't you know in heaven there is no beer? That's why we're drinking it here?

FWIW -- I never bought into that theory -- if it's heaven, of course there would be beer.

Gee . . . now I've got that earworm song in my head . . . while I am sipping a Troegenator. And . . . I am really enjoying both! I agree there must be beer in heaven. After all, didn't the monks brew bock for Lent?

I am reminded of an old story. My wife and I went to local gastropub a number of years ago for some beers and dinner. As it turns out, unbeknownst to me at the time, they were having a German Kolsch event that evening and one of the employees arranged for 5 fresh kegs of Cologne brewed beers to be flown in for this special event. They were served in the appropriate glassware - stange with the specific brewery's name on it. One example:

I had a chance to later in the evening speak to the employee that organized this event and how happy I was to be there (by happen chance). Somewhere during the conversation he stated something like "I saved you thousands of dollars". He must have seen a perplexed look on my face because he quickly responded "the cost of airfare and hotel rooms in Germany". I laughed and replied "Thank you!".

    Prost!

On a serious note, some theorize that there is a deliberate connection between the current image of an iconic witch and women brewers from the past. It's worth noting that others think there is no historical connection. Does the image of the alewife below remind you of anything? That's a rhetorical question so as not to derail the thread... so back to Bocks.

Holy smokes only on Beer Advocate could a completely ridiculous statement garner a serious historical response!

    OK maybe not only here...

Sorry Mrs. Spade, but binda wishing I had married an alewife.

I was told that last weekend was Brauhaus Schmitt's Starkbierfest. The person who told me had a half liter of Samichlauss at that fest.:open_mouth:

I counted 15 bock biers on that list. 2 of which were Weizenbocks. Wow! I agree, Jack - I wish that I could be there but know that it is good that I am not and that I cannot make it there.

Aventinus on draft. Oh my. Oh my. Oh my.
    And Andecher Doppelbock Dunkel.
And Schlenkerla Fastenbier (though that isn't a bock).

I would definitely be in trouble.

Well tonight was the local German club's Bockbierfest. There wasn't the 15 or so bocks that Brauhaus Schmitts had. :slight_frown: There were only 4 on draft - Hofbrau Maibock, Ayinger Celebrator, Troeg's Troegenator, and Pour Man's Foltzenator (a local one). Weltenburger's Asam Bock was also available but in bottles only.

I had 3 of the 4 on draft - all but the Troegenator*. Good stuff all. My favorite was the Hofbrau Maibock. That beer very much resembles a significantly amped-up Marzen (or maybe a Vienna Lager) with hops enough to balance but not dominate. Its taste and aroma profile fits what I look for a Maibock to be.

    * I had to at least try to be responsible. I will get the Troegenator sometime this week, assuming that it is still available.
