It's a new beer weekend! Yay!!!! It's been a while since I started one of these, and so I went predictably overboard with self-absorbed, over-dramatic encapsulations of the simple joy of drinking a beer. But since I'm first to the party, you're forced to sit through my stories!

This weekend's new beer is King of Nothing by Anchorage Brewing Company. I got my hands on this one via my beer brother from another mother, @TurkeysDrinkBeer. Steve, I owe you more than you will ever know! Spoiler: this beer is delicious!

    ....

Arise, Honoured Lords, for your King is poured, and He will reign liquid judgment on his realm and all that dwell within. His court must bear witness, must inscribe this event, for this King has lain long in frigid slumber. Now He is awakened to His fate, and He encourages contemplation, introspection, and consumption. It is my fate to bear witness, and bear witness I shall.

This King bears dark raiment; impenetrable midnight black worn about his frame, permitting light neither entry nor exit. Encased in his glass throne He is still, as still as the deepest depths of the darkest loch. No carbonation flutters his garment. A crown of thin, mocha lace adorns His head. He is pomp. He is regal. He is the King. L: 4.5

The Royal Host bears scented gifts of aniseed, dark yet smooth roast, and an umami note that brings the physical sensation of crackly, poppy, pork rind exploding a savoury, salty, soy-filled joy in my mouth. Like a rooster that knows it is **** of the yard it holds nothing back and grows in generosity as time and warmth play their part, producing ethereal notes of wood, vanilla and bourbon. This is perfume fit for a King. S: 4.5

This King presents regally from a distance. He looks and smells as Maximus Rex should. He hides no evidence, squirrels no secret, and sits proud and erect upon his sensory dais. But pomp and ceremony go only so far. A true KIng provides substance, a backbone for a kingdom, a pillar upon which all might lean. A true King offers his soul for his people. We must look deeper.

He offers His being, his body, and we sup. The Royal Feast provides opening notes of booze - strong, stomach-warming, throat-clearing booze - along with raspberry, cola-nut, aniseed and a sherry-like snappiness that lurks under all. There's a sweetness, almost maple-like in its thickness (if you're Australian, or English, it's more like Golden Syrup) but which is kicked abruptly by the barrel that wafts in, like a sea-borne fog upon the Royal Fleet, providing an emphatic full stop to all that has gone before. This is so emphatically delicious, so regally endowed with all of the best qualities that breeding, privilege and courtly education bestow. This is Rex Gloriosis. Long live the King. T: 5

The body of this King is the smoothest silk, the most expensive velum, the finest lace. It sits full and unctuous in the mouth. It slides down the throat like the finest oyster, leaving scant carbonic prickle and the most pleasing warmth in its stead. The King was here, and we did but see Him passing by. B: 4.5

Ultimately, the glory of the Monarchy rests with the accomplishment of its figureheads as they walk time's musty corridor. But the empire that seems destined to last forever inevitably crumbles and falls. The endless spin of time, growth and decay play upon us all, humble paeon, glorious Monarch, or world-spanning hegemon. And so it goes. None can delay the inevitable, especially those that seek greatness, who seek to fly close to the sun.

As I reach the end of my glass I look back upon this beer and the story it tells from the eye to the nose to the mouth to the throat. It reigns supreme while its sun blazes high above the meridian. It is one of the best beers I have ever had. But like everything, its time came to an end. It journeyed from the most sublime of liquids to an empty glass. It is now but a memory, a beer that will stand near the dais whenever I consider how regal, how glorious beer can be.

It was the King of my senses while it reigned, but ultimately, with my empty glass, it is King of Nothing. O: 4.75

    Cheers!

Wow, excellent opening, especially as you make me feel tons less regretful for any over-generosity of excessive verbosity in which I indulged as the once fearless if feckless leader here lol. But if one can't wax poetic about our favorite beverage on NBW/S, where can one?

It is my time of the month. and I am down to one new beer in the cellar. As none/some/most/all here know this old fuck is allowed one beer a month, a cellar beer, and I am in a contest to see which of us survives the other, me or cellar. Under 7 years in the cellar so... Down to my last new beer, and I greatly look forward to sharing it with you all later today as my beloved Rangers make ready to take on the NJ upstarts. I actually hope they give us some kind of a better game, even if they win.

    See y'all later.

What an opening @AzfromOz!! After reading that I am kinda embarrassed by my simplistic reviews:slight_smile:. I know everybody has their own style of writing a review but what really makes this forum so great is that everyone's style of reviewing is accepted and appreciated! I really enjoy reading what people think of the beers they drink, whether its your epic story writing that makes it seem as though I'm drinking the beer with you or my simple straight forward style.

Can’t wait for you to enjoy one with us, is it weird I’m excited for you to be able to have a beer this weekend?

As far as this time of year, I think I’m the only one who might enjoy the regular season more. The stress of every game gets me so amped up, it is so exciting but gosh is it exhausting, and god do I love it. Already anxious about tonight’s game in Tampa, I can’t relive last year again :frowning2:

Glad I'm not the only one to occasionally swallow a dictionary! I know it's self-indulgent and unnecessary, but I guess I like the sound of my fingers clacking the keyboard...

Don't ever be embarrassed about how you write. Just the fact you're able to coherently place your thoughts here puts you in rare air these days!

A new beer weekend that starts like that and may include the last new beer post of @cavedave (if I read into your post correctly) seems a special one. I’m glad I ran into a potentially special beer for the occasion.

Oh, and did I read something along the lines that the thread’s latest BIF reveal might be starting this weekend? If so, all the better.

@AzfromOz great opening! @cavedave I can't wait to hear from you later today!

@cjgiant why, yes, this is the official share weekend of NBS BIF #17!

I'm starting off my New Beer Weekend with a beer I neither received nor sent this round - but the brewery has already been heavily featured in the lead up to the share weekend.

Ceylon Swirl is a blended BA imperial stout from Tree House with vanilla, coffee, and cinnamon. TH has a habit of not putting the ABV on their bottles (even though they do on their cans), but usually their big stouts and barleywines easily clear double digits.

This is really darn good. The barrel dominates the nose, so while it smells quite nice, it lacks in complexity.

The palate is another story. It's got loads of flavor, leaning toward dessert stout without being cloying. The cinnamon is noticeable without being overpowering (nice!), the barrels are complementary to the massive malt base. Everything works together excellently.

At first, I didn't really get much of a pastry impression, but that definitely grew on me. I also didn't even notice the cinnamon on the first two sips.

Tremendous opening page here. Looking forward to @cavedave chiming in and generally just fantastic to see his avatar pop up.

I cheated and had this beer on Wednesday. We spent a couple days up in Ogunquit, ME, so the obligatory stop at Tully's yielded some new brews. This one didn't make it home:

Allagash Wildlife Report which I don't think will be making it out of Maine in distro, a Biere de Garde. I won't talk much since its a cheat, but it's very good and I grabbed two four packs. Review here: Allagash Wildlife Report. (At least I think it's the review).

Hopefully back later with another new Maine beer.

Great start to NBW by @AzfromOz !

Today I'm going with Founders Sweet Repute:

Appearance: Clear dark gold, but full of chunky particles, good head.

    Smell: Sweet, rum, wood, vanilla.

Taste: Sweet, candy caramels, rum, barrel wood. Slick feel, almost tastes/feels like a soft drink.

Overall: I like to try wheat wines, but still haven't quite found one that knocks my socks off. Sweet Repute takes a big swing, with 12+% abv and barrel aging, but it has a pretty bad appearance and the feel/body of the beer isn't quite there. A little too much on the sweet side, but worth a try.

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Thanks to @AzfromOz for starting us off, and good to see @cavedave able to pop in sometime this weekend.

I am earlier than normal only because I am having this today:
Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Alkoholfrei- Low Alcohol beer

Since I do have to work later today, this seemed like a logical choice. I am very impressed with the flavor. Tons of biscuit, honey and lemon. It is a bit light bodied, but not watery at all. One heck of a treat, and another amazing brew from them. I am impressed.

    Review:

    From a bottle:
A bit of smoke upon opening the bottle. This is a very clear pouring beer, clear golden color. The head is quite thick - 3 finger, and white. The head looks quite fluffy and frothy. The head retention is decent and there's some lacing on the glass. As I hold this beer up to the light, I see a ton of carbonation bubbles rising in the glass.
The aroma is very grainy, I also get a pleasing hint of lemon.
Taste - This is a very malty beer, well, N/A beer. I get tons of grain flavors - biscuit, wafer. I get a bit of lemon that shines through. I also get some honey on the backside.
The body is very light, though, somewhat expected. Not really watery.
Delicious and refreshing. Highly recommended NA beer.

I'll be back tomorrow night for another beer, and not a NA. Cheers!

Digging into a dressed-up microwave burrito (topped with reaper hot sauce, sour cream, salsa, and banana peppers) and pairing it with an appropriately juicy new-to-me IPA:

Yes, I'm sticking with Tree House, this time an 8% ABV IIPA with peach and guava puree and coconut added.

In terms of flavor profile, I'm not really getting the puree. That doesn't mean there's no impact; there's a softness, almost watery aspect, that I suspect is due to the puree, and that you could likely not achieve trying to replicate the same flavor profile with hops and yeast alone.

Tasting notes are predominantly pineapple, coconut, mango, and papaya. It's very damn good and a nicely crushable IIPA (which shouldn't be a thing).

New Glarus Brewing 30th Anniversary Quadruple. This is an important beer. A milestone. From a brewery that is known for quality. The color is dark caramel brown, with a two-finger light brown foamy top. The smell is sour apple, vanilla, caramel, apricot, raisin, raspberry, and brown sugar. The taste is sour, but sweet, raisin, vanilla, clove, dark chocolate, raspberry, and cinnamon, with a sour apple finish. Delightful. The mouthfeel is rich, thick, and syrupy, with medium carbonation. Overall, this is an excellent Quadruple. At a price of about $3 per can. With a distinctive Wisconsin feel. I love this beer. It is worth taking a drive to Wisconsin to pick up a couple cases of it.

Thanks for the amazing story of an opener (and serious beer fomo) @AzfromOz!

I greedily tore into a surprise ninja box from @WunderLlama with not one, but two Treehouse beers nestled inside, and now my wish is fulfilled as I've tried the celebrated brewery, their flagship IPA nonetheless.

    Tree House - Julius

    Canned 4.3.23

Poured at about 40° into a weizen glass

First impression of all the categories put together was a flat out 'wow'

Pours pure gorgeous juice with a nice off white pillowy head. 4.25

Mango and peach forward aroma with some nice hoppy herbals. 4.25

Bright, tropical juicy sweetness and low bitterness full hop backbone. This seriously blew me away, and I enjoy IPAs, but I love this .4.5

Very soft body with low carbo, almost a touch of juicy puckering but the aftertaste was sublime. 4.5

Overall to date the best IPA I've ever had, and I don't think I have given it enough praise, but my words unlike @AzfromOz aren't up to par to do it justice, so a solid 4.5 will have to do!

Old Nation Brewing Low Orbit. A session NEIPA. It has the pedigree to be a special beer. Yellow-orange thick orange juice color, with a thick off-white foamy ceiling. The smell is strong with pineapple. Guava, cantaloupe, and lime are also present, but it smells like pineapple juice. The taste is primarily pineapple juice. Lemon makes an appearance, but pineapple dominates the flavor. The mouthfeel is pillowy soft, smooth, clean, and light, with medium carbonation. Overall, this is an excellent session NEIPA. A tremendous value. If you like pineapple, this beer is exceptional. For Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers games going forward, I expect to see a lot of these beers being shotgunned.

Am I the first person in NBW BIF #17 to review my mystery beer? That’s wild!
So @NorsemanOne was/is my sender (that’s right, the insanity continues!)
Poured golden amber and very nearly transparent. The head is very dense and quite slow to dissipate.
Sadly my nose is still MIA, stupid Covid.
The taste is crisp and clean and very full of noble hops. Okay, maybe European? There is virtually no hops bitterness, but some biscuit like flavors that I assume are malt driven. No pepper or banana. Some sweetness that dominates the biscuit flavors.
    Lager, pretty sure.
I don’t know that I can tell lagers apart unless they are side by side, but @NorsemanOne has done his research and knew that I liked a good Pilsner, so I’m guessing it’s in that category. Regardless, it is very tasty.
    Reveal in a few.
