You pick up any Doggie Claws with your order?? Also really interested to see calvados replace the rum. And the addition of maple barrels. I'm sold.

Yeah I think this sounds like a great blend. I didn't pick up more Doggie Claws, I just have too much beer already.

Does a mod need to add Don 2023 since the brewery is closed?

No no no! Things aren't quite that out of hand here!
That's how many bottles of Don were available at Hair of the Dog as of last night. Down to 801, better hurry up and order!

Another one of those newfangled black barleywines, this one aged in wine barrels. Lumber Struck courtesy of the incomparable @FBarber , thank you sir!

Oh my, this is different and sooooo good. It is quite sweet, I get lots of vanilla, brown sugar, sweet red wine, light wood, and more. Overall I get a strong impression of marshmallow that I don't recall every experiencing in a beer. That's not quite right but it's the best I can come up with. This is a gem.

    Wax Wings - Harbors : 2

nice barrel notes. rich caramel, dark fruits and sweet toffee. i guess i’ve only had Bere:3 and then this as far as their barleywines go but they both came off as overly sweet. i like this one more than Bere:3 though.

    cheers!!

That wax is an innuendo. Can't convince me otherwise

I'd say orange marmalade more than anything else. It's worth noting that my experiences with aged Bigfoot are not totally consistent... and don't seem to fit with the more common descriptions. This conversation pushed me to go to a store that usually has lots of dying beer. Thought I'd take home some old barley wines for kicks. I also went to a few other stores to get a variety of old Bigfeet. Shopping and drinking results in my next few posts:

Had these in a blind tasting. Nothing very old obviously. The 2023 was from my basement, the 2021 from a closed case, one 2022 off a store shelf, the other 2022 kept refrigerated in a store. This clearly isn't some sort of scientific exercise... just a bit of fun. I don't know how long the refrigerated 2022 was actually in the cold... but based on the store I can guess that it was not newly put in there. (If I had to bet, I'd bet it was in the fridge for a very long time.)

The 2023 felt like the "healthiest" (least stale) beer to me. The 2022 from the store shelf felt like the most damaged beer. I expected the refrigerated 2022 to be in the best shape out of the old beers, but surprisingly, the 2021 from the closed case was the best (after the 2023). This is all just extremely anecdotal (and meaningless), but in this one very particular case, it seemed like darkness did a better job than coldness. Cheers to surprises. The 2021 was still great.

Barley Barge from Jackie O's (in collaboration with Permanent Hangover). A fantastic bourbon barrel-aged barleywine. This is my second bottle, and my notes largely follow my original impressions. Rich toffee, maple, brown sugar, raisins, prunes, vanilla, chocolate, and honey. Life is good when you have a great barleywine in your hand. Cheers!

I'm thinking the same thing. I can't just buy Don. As I suspected, my order will be placed shortly!

...I would have been happy enough to order 12 Don, but at $35 per beer, that wouldn't leave me enough money to take my trip to Sheboygan in May for the 3 Sheeps 13 year anniversary...:sunglasses:...I debated whether to take my last bottle of 2022 Don for the Friday bottle share with @GreenBayBA, @Danmullens1, @DoctorZombies, @Ocalafox, and @ChicagoJ...now I can, or, if my HoTD order comes in time, I'll bring a 2023 bottle and cellar my 2022, perhaps for a side-by-side on down the road...
