Good morning and happy 4th of July, Weekenders! I haven't had many new-to-me brews, and while I do still have a few on hand, only one is calling my name right now:

Abomination / Alternate Ending Jersey Devil Fog

Another of the WITF series, albeit with a twist on the name, Jersey Devil Fog is a New England-style turbid double IPA, clocking in at a hefty 8.6% ABV and double dry hopped with Pacific Sunrise and Riwaka CGX.

Pleasant but unassertive in both appearance and aroma, this one delivers big notes of citrus on the palate. The more I sip, the more I'm getting some tropical fruit notes, as well, but citrus remains the focus (primarily orange).

It's a lovely beer overall. Abomination has better IPAs, but this is still really good, from a brewery that excels in the style.

Well, to all my fellow Americans, happy 4th of July. Today I remember those who fought to create this nation during the Revolutionary War, including my namesake who fought in the war, and was my age when he did it.

I wasn't planning on joining in this early, since I do have to work later today, then I remembered I did have a N/A beer in my fridge that I could review, so here it is.

Faux Fox - Black Cherry - Brewdog Brewing.

Well, drinking this, I wish I would have forgotten I had it for review. This beer has, to me, a very artificial, medicine taste to the black cherry flavor. It brings me back to my childhood, when I had to drink that horrid medicine to get over whatever I had that time. I had a lot of colds, and pneumonia, so I drank a lot of that crap. Not good, and I don't know if I can finish this.

From a can canned on 10-22-2022

This beer pours almost a pink color. Clear pouring beer. There's some carbonation in it rising in the glass, and the bubbles rising look fairly big. The head that formed, and past tense is right here, was off white in color. I couldn't measure the head, because it dissipated immediately. There's no lacing on the glass.
The aroma is, like the can suggests, black cherry. The aroma does, however, smell slightly artificial.
Taste - Well, black cherry is the flavor, and I'm getting a really artificial vibe here. The backside reminds me of when I was a kid and took medicine, yeah, that flavor. Not pleasing, to say the least.
In spite of the lack of head, the beer is bubbly feeling. Light, and somewhat crisp. The feeling of the black cherry lingers, and isn't pl,easing.
Yeah, this is one I won't be getting again. It started off weak, and got worse as it went along.

See you all after work. Cheers!

Finished this last night... Thanks to @FBarber

Doppel Diviner by Art History Brewing
16 oz can received in NBS BIF #17.

Pours a deep brown. In the glass it gives off a matte finish appearance. Sandy head is firm at first, tightly packed, and 2 fingers high. As it settles in, the bubbles became larger and looser. Layered lacing aplenty.
Nose is deep brown bread, banana bread, caramel malts, some dark fruity vapors akin to prunes and dates.
Flavor leaps off with straight up, slightly spicy, banana bread. The nuts, the sugars, the spices...all there. As you sip, the smooth sweetness of the malts carry forth a slightly toasted caramel-meets-chocolate-powder note.
Mouthfeel has a warm, non-alcocohol, presence from the spice. Heft is on the lighter side of medium.

    Happy 4th all!
So @Roguer sent me a lot of beer that should be consumed relatively quickly, so I’m giving it a shot.
The pour is what I have come to expect from East Coast brewers; unfiltered or straight up hazy. This one is more hazy. The manilla colored dense head never goes away and leaves sheets of lacing.
The aroma is sadly lost on my Covid affected nose.
The taste is some white grapes, some apricot, maybe mango? Excellent combination of flavors.
The feel is helped by the active carbonation, which makes this darned near crushable- and considering the ABV that may not be great. There is a dryness that accented the white grape taste, which somehow doesn’t affect the refreshment factor.
OA, good beer, really good. I think I like these hops.

Harvest year 2018, bottled January, 2019.

Appearance is pretty straight-forward, with a translucent dirty yellow body capped by a thin head that receded to a persistent ring. Aroma is a little musty, with faint peaches and implied tartness.

From a flavor perspective, the peaches are still there. There's almost a hint of smokiness, which is presumably the oak. While it's light and refreshing, it's too thin for my tastes. Overall, good beer, but not great. Highly likely that I waited too long to drink this.

Maibock, 7.8% ABV for 2023. Enjoyed from a 16oz can. best by 8-29-2023
Look: Transparent gold body, Tall white head that hangs on for a little while leaving some lacing.
    Smell: Grain, sweet malt, bread
Taste: Grain, sweet malt, bread then more grain. then the hops kick in. Grass, and the spiral/noble hop flavor. Maybe a hint of lemon/honey. The finish is a bit harsh astringent and bitter with a after taste that lingers.
Fell is solid just slightly syrupy
A solid beer I would give it a 3.88/5 overall. More to style than some Maibock's I had this year. Brewed with a heavy dose of WI grown Mt. Hood hops.

Happy Fourth friends!!! What a long yet special day, we've hosted the 4th since we moved into our house on Main Street 10 years ago. It has grown each year, more friends, more kids, more pop ins, just great times. I take a picture every year, this is the most packed it has ever been...it’s a day that has a mind of its own now and we’re happy to share with so many. Plenty of food inside and beverage outside for all to enjoy...

To make things crazier we move out tomorrow for ~3 months for renovations, Mrs. Phisher said I need to force myself to relax so I said I'll hang out with my beer friends for a bit before packing up a bunch of stuff, we finally just finished cleaning up parade chaos. I grabbed this one in Vermont last week, have had their pils before and liked it enough to try their dunkel.

Urban Chestnut - Dorfbier (Munich Dunkel 4.8%)

Looks the part, nice medium hued brown, off white head; not great retention, very minimal with really nothing sticking around, no lacing to speak of; clarity is decent but there is a cloudiness to it.

I find the nose quite pleasant; a very distinct toasted bread character comes off, there is some husk/grain mixed in too; minimal if any hops on the nose...picking up something slightly and aromatic, yet nondescript; this one is all about the malt, as it warms there is a subtle sweet syrupy smell.

The taste like the nose is all about the toast and bread; it has some walnut like nuttiness to it on the finish but again with toasted like character, old world hops are present on the finish too, earthy like.

Light to medium-light body, drinks pretty smooth; finishes almost completely dry but there is a little something sweet that lingers on the tongue, far from off putting but it is noticeable, low bitterness.

A decent dunkel, nothing special to me but I really enjoyed the toast like characters of this beer, if it were crisper it would take it up quite a bit in my opinion.

Well, that is it for me new beer wise today, I will probably enjoy one later tonight but it will not be a new one. See you all next weekend, I'll be posting from the in-laws for the foreseeable future. I have one I'm really looking forward to but I will save for next weekend. Have a great rest of your Fourth. Cheers everyone :beers:

Gotta say, I really appreciate your opening up your yard for the parade. Around here we often see “Private Property” (Get off my lawn!) signs. Ah well, fortunately for most the parade goes through business areas so people just set up in the parking lots.
    Cheers!

    Happy Independence Day NBW!
I'm celebrating by drinking a double barrel aged stout.

Taxman Double Barrel Deadline aged in 6-11 year rye and bourbon barrels

12oz can released on 04/22/23 purchased at the Fortville taproom 15.1% ABV. The beer pours dense very dark brown with medium brown colored head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and little else. No lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring caramel, molasses, dark fruit, fudgy bourbon barrel and rye. Really good start. The taste is semisweet roasted malt with copious amounts of bourbon, rye, chocolate fudge, oaky barrel. Mild bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. ABV is very well hidden for 15.1%. Overall, excellent.

Clear amber colored body; dense, lively carbonation; thin yet lasting head, white and somewhat creamy texture. Initial blast of sage on the nose then transitioning to a light caramel and apricot and peach combination; a little musty. Amazing flavor; honey and musk melon; candi sugar and caramel; bold phenolic bitterness. Heavy, chewy body; dense residual sugar feel; dull earthy sweetness counterbalanced with a mild dryness.

This beer is phenomenal. The appearance and smell are pretty nice, but its true highlights are the rich, dense, and complex flavors and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Per the bottle label, only 20 cases were produced in 2022.

Have had before but have never reviewed.

Nose is a smidge oxidized, probably 5 years on this so apropos. Sweet, candied, clean. Bitter, sharp. Almost barley wine.

Taste does follow. Nice full mouthfeel. Sharp bit of bitterness throughout. Soft and sweet in the middle. Tidy finish of candy, brown sugar. Cascade. Malt.

Very nice, I have one more bottle, will drink it this year.

I brought several old beers up with me to NH in my never-ending quest to drink down my cellar. I have several old Firestone Walker wild ales in my cellar, and this bottle of Krieky Bones was one of them. Bottled over 6 years ago, this one should have been consumed long ago.
    Bottled June 19, 2017.

Quite the battle to remove the cork. An aggressive pour resulted in....nothing. This is a still beer at this point. Still maintains an attractive ruby color that lets some light shine through. Aroma has degraded. It's musty, and that's about all I can say about it. As far as taste, the cherries have somehow survived, and maybe even thrived. Clear cherry taste, and it doesn't have that cough syrup artificiality that you sometimes get. It's one dimensional at this point, but that's my fault for waiting so long to drink it. Overall, still drinkable, but a mistake on my part to not have enjoyed this one years ago.

Hope you all are having a great Fourth!
I’m dreading the fireworks as my dog is terrified by them (and thunder and gunfire) but I can’t begrudge anyone celebrating.

Next up for me is another DIPA with Nelson hops, and Pacific Jade as well. Another from the strike on my porch from @Roguer.
Poured the color of Baltic amber with a tall manilla head that leaves sheets of lacing.
Aroma lost on my Covid affected nose.
The taste: the Nelson hops brought white grapes and mild stone fruit flavors, the Jade hops a more herbal taste, they worked well together and seemed to be balanced with the malt base which brought some sweetness to the party.
The feel went well with the opaque body; a little viscosity to promote sipping.
OA, very good beer but not sure I could drink more than one of these a day.
I might need to not drink another one until this evening!

...the origins are shrouded in mystery...we have other neighbors that use to do a Xmas gathering with singing of holiday songs (they now live in SC, so that's a thing of the past) plus an annual ice cream social generally hosted by the same family in summer...I'm not really sure how chili cook-off started although, now that I dwell on it, it may have spun off from when I was a Neighborhood Watch block captain and Mrs. BeerGoot and I were brainstorming ways to get the neighborhood together so I could present my (very brief) NW spiel...a couple of times we actually had local police, fire, and Red Cross people show up for presentations...but that was then...now, it's basically a gathering of old and new neighbors to share food, drink, and good times...I particularly like it because we're an eclectic neighborhood (bible thumpers to godless heathens, large families to no kids, young, old, left-wing and right-wing, et al)...it's particularly nice seeing kids having a good time...I've also enjoyed some great beers and bourbons with other neighbors...

...this year's event date hasn't been set yet...

Poured from a 16 ounce can into a tulip glass.

Look- Very deep burgundy, opaque, visible particulate at the margins, zero head even with propagation , granular residue on the glass wall.

Smell- Cherry, blueberry, slight caramel, medium strength of scent.

Taste- Blueberry, cherry, caramel, moderately sour, mildly sweet, medium strength of flavor.

Feel- Between medium and full body, silky, below average carbonation, moderately sour, mildly sweet, mildly dry finish.

Overall- Very deep burgundy and opaque with zero head. Bouquet was blueberry and cherry with slight caramel. Flavor was also blueberry and cherry, but more of the caramel came through. Feel was between medium and full, but very silky from the addition of lactose. Overall this beer did not have a flavor profile that meshed together well and that adversely affected it’s enjoyability.

Pours a gorgeous unfiltered straw color with a foamy white head that lingers as a cap on the body of the beer and provides moderate lacing. Beautiful WCIPA.

The nose is dank and slightly weedy, with some lemon, mango, and peach notes for good measure. I am already a big fan of the Strata, Simcoe, and Columbus hop trifecta before the first sip.

The taste exceeds expectations (for me), with lots of dank weedy, earthy flavors joining with the citrus notes (mango and lemon) and stone fruit (peaches) to provide a WCIPA that is SOOOOOO drinkable and ventures a bit off the typical “bitter WCIPA” that I enjoy.

That’s another way of saying I’m expanding my beer nerd horizons. At 60 years old, I’m glad to be cognizant of expanding anything.

The mouthfeel is medium and drying, per the style. I wish I’d purchased a truckload of this flavorful beer that confidently ventures a bit outside the WCIPA box.
