3 Sheeps Brewing Co. -- The Wolf: Barrel Select

Poured a clear, dark mahogany red; decent khaki colored head that soon fades to a wispy band of suds inside the glass. Powerful aroma; roasted and charred grains; booze saturated oak; cacao nibs and bitter chocolate; faint whiskey note. Immense palette of flavors; milk and dark chocolate; brownies and fudge; subliminal bitterness sleeping beneath the rich sweetness; muted whiskey. Heavy body; dense and silky; velvety residual sugar feel; very mild alcohol warmth.

This powerhouse barrel-aged imperial stout stands out with its big, blended flavors. The base beer never leaves center stage while the barrel aging deftly adorns and adds to the overall appeal of the beer. Rich, decadent, and immensely flavorful.

...the Friday I arrived in Sheboygan and visited the brewery prior to the start of its 13th anniversary party the following day, this is one of the bottles in the to-go cooler that just called my name...frickin' beer Siren song...

A beautiful day at the lake, with a lot of time on the boat, calls for a beautiful beer. This beer qualifies, IMHO. The brewery (Daredevil) is out of the Indy area, so they’re semi-local, and I’ve only had one other beer from them (Lift Off, their flagship beer and a very nice WCIPA, IMHO), so I’m excited to try this WCDIPA, AKA “ovaltine’s sweet spot.”

    Let’s GOOOOOOO!!!!!

Pours a slightly unfiltered golden color with a creamy oatmeal colored head that sticks to the glass like a magnet does to steel. Beautiful WCDIPA.

The nose is varied, with orange marmalade, some grapefruit, resiny pine, and a very nice and malty caramalt note. I like where this is heading.

The taste is led by the orange marmalade and grapefruit, and approaches dank, and exceeds delicious when combined with the resiny pine and the caramalt that flirts with biscuity. This is exceptionally well balanced and flavorful, especially as it warms.

The mouthfeel is full and drying, on point for a WCDIPA. I am really looking forward to the rest of the 4-pack, because this is really well done, IMHO.

PS: Joy and Ranger on the boat. He’s not spoiled at all - he only gets steak once a week. That’s practically uncivilized for a dog of his breeding and upbringing (he’s a rescue that is probably every bit of a half dozen breeds - I found him searching “shepherd mix puppies” all the way back in 2012).

My plan was to go off the wagon tomorrow for a dinner and a show kind of day,
but I decided to start a little early!

(Early dinner at Onion City Chicken and Oysters followed by the Billy Strings show!)

    16 ounce can packaged 04/05/23.

Moderate pour yields a one and a half inch white head over a bright, straw-colored body with adequate lacing.

Nose of cracker, hay, and slight hops.

Taste is slightly malty sweet with a crisp, slightly bitter hop finish.

Very good feel with medium carbonation.

Overall, a nice stab at a German Pilsner from Williston, VT!

    Cheers!!

That one instantly became a favorite of mine. I don't know much about Cold IPAs, and don't have an opinion of them beyond faddish. But damned if that wasn't super drinkable and flavorful.

    Kemker Kultuur - Biäke

Saison with birch leaves, from Germany (5.5%).

Pours a cloudy, golden amber coloration with a small, frothy, quickly fading head. Smells of doughy, slightly grainy malt and quite herbal and earthy aromas of dried leaves, tree bark and green tea, as well as some floral undertones.

Taste is an excellent balance of doughy, slightly grainy malt and herbal and earthy notes of dried leaves, tree bark, green tea, lemongrass and fresh wildflowers, lighter, fruity esters of apple and gooseberry, as well as hints of mushroom funk, all underlaid, by a sharp, lemony sourness. Finishes with a medium/strong tartness and some earthy, herbal, floral and sharply acidic accents lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for another excellent, although rather unique Saison from Kemker, not featuring those typical fruity and spicy esters prominently, except for subtle fruity understones, and focusing on earthy, herbal and floral notes instead, with the flavor profile apparently being more heavily influenced by the birch leaves than I had assumed. Although it is difficult to pin them down exactly, there certainly is a certain, earthy character to this that I'm sure can be directly attributed to them. The tartness is a bit more sharp and acidic than I'm used to from Kemker, really lingering on the tongue in the aftertaste with a certain lemony tartness.

Good afternoon/evening, BAs! My next two new beers are both courtesy of @Whyteboar , and were consumed and rated along with dinner prep (I don't much like doing that, but I had some nice slow moments prepping these flautas).

    First up:

    Ayinger Maibock

The #1 ranked Maibock on BA! Wow, no wonder he sent me this bottle in a strike loaded with barrel aged stouts!

It's #1 for a reason, too (a fact I didn't know going into the review; I just knew I'd never had it). It's sweet and expressive, showing the ABV in the body but not in any sting. Super easy to drink. Definitely on the sweet side, for sure. Notes of white bread, honey, clove, banana, and cracker.

    Fairly one-dimensional, but absolutely lovely.

16 oz can canned 5/2/23 into a pint glass.
L: Pours medium hazed glossy yellow with a 1.5" soapy eggshell white head that has OK retention, light carbo bubbles, broken sudzy lacing. Some light sediment at bottom of glass upon final drink.
S: Citrus, pineapple, honeycomb, a hint of wild flower, light yeast.
T: Sweet light citrus, lemon bread, yeast, white bread, honey, light citrus zest, a hint of melon, wheat, light caramel, has a moderately sweet finish & linger while being gently rich.
F: Bright, soft, mildly juicy medium-bodied feel with a smooth middle and a medium-fast moderately drying finish.
O: Fruity, bready, lightly full succulent citrus, fairly juicy, big flavor for such a light-natured beer. Very easy drinking. It is excellent in its style.

Tilted Barn - The Other One, from @Roguer in NBS BIF #17

16oz can served in a snulip. Can is dated 06/21/23. @Roguer sent it to me in NBS BIF #17.

Pours moderately murky, amber-orange. Smallish head. Smell is milder than The Chosen One, similar, but brighter: Tropical and honeysuckle.

Taste is ripe tropical fruit, strong fruit skin bitterness, vaguely tropical vibe in the background. No booziness here, as far as I can detect.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth, a tiny bit of dry chalkiness. Overall, very nice.

Next round: Sisu Stout, a bourbon barrel aged "Finnish-style stout" (whatever the hell that is) from Upper Hand brewery.

@Whyteboar , my native Michigander wife is loving all this support for the homeland. :grinning:

As I said in my review, I may not be sure what a "Finnish-style stout" is, but I am sure what constitutes a damn good stout - and this one certainly fits the bill for the latter.

Unlike Craig, I found the bourbon influence very balanced and complementary, and even very much secondary, to the base stout notes - but that's likely just down to individual variance in palate, day-to-day, food and beer pairings, and maybe even Covid. I definitely didn't find it more bourbon than stout, no question.

Tasting notes of chocolate, molasses, nuts, prune, raisin, oak, and coffee. Very smooth and thick, if not chewy. Fantastic stout overall and a joy to drink.

Folks another NH offering from my trip last week.

    Stoneface - IPA

Papaya, peach, stonefruit, bitter pithy hops. Oats. Great mouthfeel: full and lively. Nose is a replica of the tasting notes.

Everything I’ve had from NH has been great. I had an amber ale called winni I think, from “603 brewing” - that was a lovely beer. Don’t sleep on NH folks, especially new Englanders.

    Cheers!

    A. Pillowy soft head, eventually dissipates to thick cap and nice lacing. Color is hazy but not thick yellow orange color
    A. Aromas of lemon lime, tropical fruit and crackers. Not real aromatic but nose on the glass rim brings it out.
    T. Taste is citrus as lemon lime, mango, pineapple and a hint of bready yeast.
    M. Mouthfeel is soft and fairly smooth, finishes a tick astringent lingering on the tongue Medium carbonation and no hint of alcohol
    0. This is a smooth tasty IPA, layered flavors and enjoyable to drink. Not real heavy and a nice little tingling finish. I’m glad I got a 4 pack.

We are up in Windham, ME for two weeks of vacation. Not a bad ride except the traffic around Boston. Usual stop at Pigs Fly for pizza and bread. A few casts off the dock got a couple of 3-ish pound very feisty bass. Hope to find some ME goodies soon since we are about 10 minutes from Allagash which is more or less right next to the grocery store...

    But for tonight:

Exhibit A Right to Farm series. This one says it is a Northeast Pale Lager. It's brewed with "local" malts, which seems a relative term. Girl Power Pils, Munich, and VaVa Voam (???) From Dancing Grain farming NY plus Vienna from Thrall Farm, CT. Hopped with Tettnang and Motueka hops. So I'm not thinking that's local to Framingham, MA, but OK I get the sentiment, sorta...maybe...uh, not really. It does claim each case sale supports 90 Sq ftof local Farmland.

Pretty pour - crystal clear golden color with a huge pristine foamy head thatfalls to a quarter inch of chunks and tremendous cling.

The smell is interesting. Lots of bready, doughy malt. Vaguely citrus that I reluctantly have to say is like lime. There's a nice herbal aroma over the top - like fresh basil and rosemary. It's pleasantly enough and the herbal notes are a little interesting.

The taste is fairly bland except for the build up of the herbal tastes in the aroma. It's strong in the aftertaste. The rest is pretty pedestrian - just basic lager malts, really, that are on the bread dough side of the road. I do get a (fortunately for me) faint kiss of lime.

    Medium bodied, very mild bitterness.

Overall, this is in JAB category - just a beer. It's tame, a bit mundane, nothing I'd rush out to buy again. In the 3.6 region on the BA-o-rometer. Not bad, but it's not one of those simple beers that are executed so well you take notice.

So I looked up this VaVa Voam which is a specialty grain and it is supposed to lend mouth feel and support the foam, so it does both. But it's also supposed to have some interesting flavors which I don't find.
