Welcome to New Beer Weekend, the place where we join each other virtually each weekend to share our thoughts on beers that are new to us (and my favorite thread on BA). The guidelines are simple.....just enjoy a new to you beer and post your thoughts on look, aroma, feel, and of course, taste. Pictures are great too. As you'll see from my review below, you don't need to be a poet.

I'm up at the lake in New Hampshire this weekend with two of my best friends (dating back to 3rd grade which was, well.....a LONG time ago!) I figured a good way to start the day after watching the sunrise was with a beer that I've been eyeing up ever since purchasing it almost four years ago, but never got around to drinking....Bourbon County Cafe de Olla.
Appearance is like most other stouts, at least in color and head. Deepest of browns / almost black with thin tan colored head. Nice legs. Aroma is rich malts and coffee, but mostly unremarkable. Four years likely hasn't done the aroma any favors, but thankfully the taste is still fantastic. Loads of coffee, rich chocolate notes, light char, a hint of orange and oak. Full bodied and viscous.

Overall, this is really nice, even after four years. Great balance between the coffee / roast and just enough sweetness to add enough depth.

Cheers to time with friends, and good beer!

[IMG] Thanks @Roy_Hobbs for opening us up early. Tree House being 15 from my final stop on Thursday afternoon might be dangerous.

Poured into a 13 oz glass canned on 9/1/23. Pours a very hazy yellow orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves massive rings of lace with impressive retention. 4.75

Aroma is tangerine, passionfruit, mango, pineapple, peach, and apricot. 4.75

Taste follows tangerine, passionfruit, pineapple, mango, peach, and apricot. 4.75

Mouthfeel is big, soft creamy carbonation like they do best, not sticky or dry, and at 9% it goes insanely easy with 0 alcohol present. 5

Overall this one is killer and if you get a chance you must get this sauce. Huge wow factor, even in the Tree House world. 4.75 Cheers all.

A beautiful start to your day it seems, and to our thread. I’ll join you later today with a beer I’m really looking forward to drinking.

Thanks for getting us started. I haven't decided if I'll crack open anything new this weekend or work on clearing out some older stuff, but am looking forward to reading about everyone's new brews.

Another Festbier – a Festivus for the rest of us!

Within the last month I discussed two Pale Oktoberfest/Festbier beers. I have another one for today: Fat Heads Oktoberfest – Bavarian Style Festbier.

"MALT: pale 2-row, light munich, dark munich

    YEAST: House Lager

    BEGINNING GRAVITY: 13.0 Plato

    ENDING GRAVITY: 2.6 Plato

    COLOR: Deep Gold

    5% ABV

    26 IBU”

    https://fatheads.com/g-suffa.html

Some of the technical details in the above appear inconsistent to me. The ABV is listed as being 5% but using a calculator the difference in gravity between 13 degrees Plato and 2.6 degrees Plato yields an ABV of 5.6% which is consistent with the Oktoberfest/Festbier beer style.

What the heck, let’s see how this beer tastes.

Served in my Sly Fox Bock Fest Willi Becher glass:

    Appearance:

Golden colored with a BIG white head.

    Aroma:

A bready aroma with a subtle hint of sweetness.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a pleasing bready flavor and just a tiny hint of sweetness. There is a low/moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a medium carbonation level. There is a dry finish.

    Overall:

I enjoyed drinking this beer, it is very good! This beer had a pleasing & balanced flavor profile with an aspect of great drinkability.

    Cheers!

Howdy y’all! This morning’s new to me breakfast beer hails from Threes Brewing, Brooklyn NY - “Voluntary Exile” a Baltic Porter:

Canned 1/10/23. Poured at 54°. Dark brown/coppery hue with clarity under fizzy light tan head that disappeared quickly leaving a thin, incomplete ring; no cap retention, no lace. Sweet caramel malt nose. Roasty bitter almost burnt malt entry, followed by sweet caramel and toffee flavors; dry finish. Medium body, light carbonation; no warmth from 9.2% abv. Overall, drinks light for abv; long bitter roast linger; not as complex/layered as other Baltic Porters I’ve had, still enjoyable nonetheless.

    3.75 | 4.0 | 4.25 |3.75 | 4.0
    Score: 4.06 rDev - 0.7%

Flavorful and roasty. I’d drink again but would not go out of my way to purchase. Cheers!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours an attractive hazy orange yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace, with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is cantaloupe, passionfruit, kiwi, peach, and apricot. 4

Taste cantaloupe, passionfruit, peach, kiwi, and apricot well balanced. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, soft carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 8% easy going down. 4

Overall this is rock solid, but I trust they will get even better. They are only 7 months old. Nice brew. 4

Going a little lighter with the second beer of the morning. This is Bergsteiger, a Schwarzbier from Tree House.

Canned about a year ago, but that has certainly done nothing to diminish its appearance. I'm a sucker for Scharzbiers, and this one is beautiful. Loads of persistent beige head, excellent retention and great, great lacing. Aroma is light roast with clear toasted bread notes and faint malts. Overall, this is an enticing beer.

Taste, while still really nice, takes a back seat to the look and nose. Some of the same toast notes come through, but I think this has probably suffered a little bit from the year in the can. Very easy drinking, and mostly thin. Easy to drink.

Ever since people have been posting this beer I’d hope for a reason to end up in PA. No luck yet but fall ain’t over yet  heck it hasn’t even begun.

Well, today I have an excuse to just sit around the house, watching football and probably drinking a few beers. I wasn't paying close attention as I walked to my car yesterday, and only caught the inside third of my right foot on the edge of the curb of the ramp leading to the sidewalk from the parking lot. Historically, I have found that I can generally shake of any rolling of my ankle without any injury, but I knew as I almost tumbled this time was an anomaly.

Luckily, after an evening of ice, I am fairly mobile and am expecting a speedy enough recovery in the next few days or so. That said, there's no reason to chance undoing any healing by being too active. Pouring myself a collaborative Festbier isn't too risky or strenuous, so here is Stowe-style Festbier from von Trapp and Narragansett.

The dimpled mug isn't the best for judging clarity, especially with the humidity condensing on it, but with a small effort of wiping, the beer seems to be very clear, if not completely so. The foamy white head that has eyes on being fluffy falls to provide sudsy remains at the top of the glass.

The bottom of the can indicates this is a "hoppy Wiesn lager," but I am getting more sweet malt and fruit notes on the nose. Granted, the fruits could be coming from dry-hopping (von Trapp's website didn't have this beer listed for any details), but it doesn't "feel like it" to me. Part of me thinks there's a bit of a corn-y smell as well at first, but it gets a little more of a sweet crusty bread vibe as I type this up.

If I felt doubt on how hoppy this beer might be from the nose, the first sip eliminated the doubt. I got an unexpected playful slap of grass, husky grains, and grape leaves bitterness in my first sip. My follow up sip confirmed this, this time with a slight metallic tinge to it. I was less surprised by the hops than I was that the sweeter malt notes decided not join in the game.

So I decide to go looking for them...

I get a little distracted by some lemon peel, but I do think I find them in the taller grasses, though they seem content wandering around in the field so I let them be until they decide to come out on their own. About halfway through the mug, they become more social, turning on some honey-sweet charm, though the "green bitter" notes are still the center of attention at this party.

In the end, though, this doesn't present itself to me as a malt-driven festival lager. It's almost more like a German Pilsner to me. I think I have a few side-by-sides I could do with the remaining cans - against SN's Oktoberfest and/or some German[-stlye] Pilsners.

Back to a big beer. Clocking in at 17.2% this is "Oh My God, He's a Bozo!" from Evil Twin. Not sure how old the bottle is, but best guess is 4-5 years.

Dark brown with slightly red tinge around the edges. No head to speak of. Aroma is boozy with maple syrup lurking beneath the booze. Taste has plenty of bourbon notes and overall the high ABV is clear. Maple is less noticeable than in the aroma. Very thin for the ABV.

    Overall, meh

Another exBEERiment you could try is drinking this beer from differing glassware.

In a thread about glassware I discussed how this year’s Sierra Nevada Festbier tasted noticeably different from drinking from a mug vs. my Polish Pilsner glass. A dimpled mug has more of a traditional presentation to it but for my palate the Polish Pilsner glass was the better choice for the Sierra Nevada Festbier.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...the-type-of-beer-glasses.673886/#post-7821224

And perhaps another exBEERiment is conduct a side-by-side of the Von Trapp Festbier using two different glasses?

    Cheers!

P.S. I wish you a speedy recovery from your injury. I think I read an article that both elevating the ankle in a comfy reclining chair while drinking beer is the best cure!:beers:

I did a slight elevation most of the evening yesterday, I think it probably helped.

I finished my review above with about a quarter beer left and got drawn away. Coming back, the beer was on the warmer side, and continued its journey towards being more balanced but it also added a hint of spice.

Maybe I’ll do an Oktoberfest comparison in non-traditional glasses and see if I note differences from my initial reviews on top of differences between the brews.

Traditional advice is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), but I think those of us in this forum know that adding beer to make it B.R.I.C.E. is a way more effective solution to a bum ankle.

Thanks for kicking off the weekend @Roy_Hobbs ! Glad the Cafe de Olla is holding up well as I still have a few in my cellar. Sorry about your ankle @cjgiant , hope you heal soon.

The theme for me this weekend is two from Roaring Table, one of my favorite suburban brewers (perhaps my favorite). These were purchased before knowing I'd be deluged with beers in Wisconsin, so hopefully these beers held up well. Starting with a porter collaboration with Transient Artisan Ales in Michigan.

Roaring Table / Transient Artisan Ales Pot of Black

    Can Notes:
Purchased 4/15 at Beer on the Wall at store temperature for $3.75 with tax. 16 oz canned 4/4/23. 5.0% ABV English-Style Porter. Brewed and canned by Roaring Table Brewing 739 W. State Route 22, Lake Zurich, Illinois, in collaboration with Transient Artisan Ales.

    Appearance:
Poured 2/3 of the can slowly into a nonic pint glass, the rest after digging in. Creamy bubbly creamy tan head covers the pitch black base, chestnut brown black when held to light but impenetrable none the less. Takes about five minutes for the head to settle into a creamy full layer over the top and clingy soapy lacing in its wake. 4.5

    Aroma:
Bursts with flavor from the can open, strong roast malt leads, dark roast chocolate follows. Drawing me in. 4.25

    Taste:
Consistent with the aroma, roast malt leads and is pleasant to good, chocolate takes a bit of lighter approach here. Not a lot of complexity here, age may have subdued, but liking what's in the glass. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Roast malt flavors holding excess sweetness, but still slightly sweet to sweet overall. Drinks at to a bit higher than the ABV, medium body, persistent body adds to it. Slightly chalky, could be due to age, nice dark roast malt lingers on the finish joyously. 4.5

    Overall:
This is a solid offering, will definitely want to revisit fresher and or on draft. Hit to exceeded high expectations with these two breweries. Liked this one and recommend for those who look for a traditional pour. Definitely glad I picked this up and finally cracked open, hopefully this is re-released in the future. 4.5

Have a Zwickle planned for tomorrow, and three remaining in the cellar so the stakes are higher as usual for Prime Time New Beer Sunday.

Did a run to the recycling center this morning to unload a bunch of cardboard. It was hot, tiring work, so when I got home I wanted something to quench my thirst. I settled on Sunset Shandy Lemonade from Five Boroughs Brewing.
A pretty clear gold color with a persistent white head.
    Faint aroma off lemon.
Lemon taste, like a powdered lemonade mix.
    A metallic aftertaste.
    Not for me.
