Loved Victory Headwaters. I thought that it would be a long time brewed beer for Victory but alas disappeared after a few years. Victory should bring it back.

[IMG] Cigar City Seabass, a one off that I remember throughly enjoying. Thought I had heard it was actually a mistake, but a very tasty mistake.

Yeah, looked for it for a few years and here's how I finally found it. You know how the large PA distributors used to have aisle after aisle of pallets of cases of beer, one brand/package size per pallet, but over in the corner, near where you'd drop off your empty case(s), there'd sometimes be a rack of odd cases, maybe only one or two of usually imported, expensive or not very popular styles/brands?

I wandered over to that section one day, saw a plain white corrugated cardboard case. "Gee, what's this?" The 4 lid flaps were just folded over each other, no tape or glue. Flipped open a flap and pulled out one of these (except it was full of beer):

WHOA! Probably cost me double of what any other Horlacher product would have (so, maybe $6-8/cs?). I'd guess it was 1977 or 78. Might even have been just after the brewery closed in that latter year.

Do you know how old the beer was that you purchased? Was it still tasty (or past its prime?)?

    Cheers!

Last beer I had, at last call, from cask, on my one and only trip to London. Started kicking myself that night for not drinking it the whole trip!:grin:

The Fest Marzen also seems to be draft/brewery only now because I know they have it there and I haven't seen it in any stores this month or last month.

It was relatively fresh (hell, in '78 I was probably working retail for minimum wage or a bit over so even a $8 case would be more than 2 hours pay, so I wasn't about to buy stale "rare' beer ).

White corrugated case was clean and undamaged (I have vague memories of asking a worker at the distributor about it) and the bottles were manufactured in 1978 (back when US bottles were embossed on the base with the year of manufacture). Horlacher closed in July.

All I recall was it tasted like a US superpremium along the lines of Michelob or (Huber's) Augsburger. A bit heavier than the premium macros but that was true of Horlacher's other beers, too - the cheap locals often tasted "stronger" (i.e., not "light") which is why many had bad reps during that era - they had a distinct flavor.

Hey, was the liquid inside those last batches' bottles really 9 month aged Perfection Beer or did the brewery just bottle anything and slap those label on it? Yeah, seeing as how they were obviously in bad financial shape, I had considered that back then.

This store often pulls stuff from its cellars but at $13.50 I doubt this is one of those offerings.

    Also, straight from the brewery:

my only perfect rating. I tried my best to homebrew a clone of it (around 10 batches), starting with the actually recipe and then tweaking it to make up for differences in equipment and process, and could never get it just so, so I started trying to put my stamp on it. All of the homebrews were good, but none as good. I miss all the Pretty Things beers, though.

Also, Sam Adams Imperial Hallertau Pilsner. No idea why they've never brought it back; seems like it's the only beer they've brewed that had people clamoring for it, outside of Old Fezziwig and Holiday Porter.

"Bitburger Pils" in the 70´s and 80´s with 40+ IBU before the brewery relaunched the taste to nowadays well under 30 IBU. Now they call it just "Bitburger" but it´s a total different beer...sad
