A bit of " leg yakin' " can sometimes be a bit of temporary sentimental hygiene, a brief interlude for the lonely.

Quite the tasty, bready Bock from our friends at Fieldwork. They are known for their IPAs but I had a pilsner as well the other day that was spot on. 6.6% ABV.

Enjoying the last of my Doppelbock from Lazy Hiker in Franklin, NC. This is pretty tasty, toasted malts and dark fruit are prevalent but is lacking the yeast impartation that the German masters can do. Still an enjoyable, smooth brew.
    Cheers!

OK so I have a question.

Uff-Da from New Glarus is slated to come out this fall. It made me realize how few "regular" bocks there are. Why is that?

I know the general answer is "because nobody drinks them", so the real question is "why doesn't anyone drink them?"

This isn't really the usual annoying question of "why doesn't everyone like the same styles I like?" It's just puzzling that there are so many doppelbocks, for example, relative to regular bocks. Hell, there are even lots of maibocks compared to regular bocks. If you go to the BA page for best bocks, there are only 95 examples (with the poorly rated Michelob AmberBock rounding out the list, at a rating of 68). At the end of the list it says "Top 100 not achieved for this list due to a small data set."

In the Top 20 there are only two bocks with over 100 ratings. Contrast this to doppelbocks, where there are many highly rated options, with several German breweries represented with national distributed beers. Incidentally, Celebrator could be classified as a "regular" bock if we are just looking at alcohol %.

Some German breweries have a very popular doppelbock, and either no regular bock (Weihenstephaner, Paulaner), or one that is not distributed widely in the US (Ayinger has only a "Winter Bock", which I have never seen).

So people clearly like the bock flavor profile--why so few regular bocks? It's like having a bunch of IPAs but no hoppy pale ales.

It doesn't appear there are a ton in Germany, either, so presumably it's not just a US thing.

Thoughts? Too hard/expensive to make? Do people just get their malty fix from dark lagers, porters, stouts, etc.?

I had Uff-da from New Glarus today. I thought it was quite good. Normally I might compare it to a German example, or another well-known bock, but I never can find any good "regular" bocks, as I mused about in my post above. This and Shiner Bock were the only ones I saw in my very large liquor store. I remember Shiner as being not very good, plus I think it's not really a bock, as it's 4.5%. I feel like I've seen La Trappe in the States, but not lately. I've never seen Ayinger Winterbock.

Anyway it was nice and malty, a little chocolate and coffee and earth. Maybe a little toffee. Perhaps a touch too sweet for me, but not by much if so. I had it a little warmer than the 48 degrees recommended on the can. I guess I could compare it to Celebrator, as the two are the same %, although Celebrator is classified as a doppel.

Cheers! Anyone know of other regular bocks available in Wisconsin? I realize the line between "regular" bocks and doppelbocks is pretty blurry. I feel like I've seen Schell's in years past, but not for a while. I think maybe that comes out in the early spring.

Yes, Shiner Bock is not a 'regular' Bock. Some folks characterize it as being an American Bock. I characterize it as being an AAAL (American Amber Adjunct Lager). I find Shiner Bock to be similar to Yuengling Traditional Lager.

    Cheers!

I see in the reviews that many consider this to be better than the Holsten, which is the other mass produced Maibock. I don't agree. I prefer the Holsten. Maybe it is just familiarity as Holsten is more readily available here. In any case a respectable Maibock.

It used to be uncommon in Ontario also, but I am seeing it show up in more places lately.:+1:

Boulevard Dark Crator BBA Doppelbock, 12.5% ABV. Pours clearish medium copper, with a 1.5 finger off-whit head that left no lacing. Aroma is light fruit and caramel/toffee. Taste is lightly-roasted malt, caramel/toffee, fruit, and bourbon, moderately sweet, slightly bitter. Decent mouthfeel, if a bit over-carbonated. Overall excellent.

This is just fantastic on a cold, rainy Fall day in NH.
