Drekker Chonk Blackberry Daiquiri Push-Pop Sundae Sour, 6.6% ABV. Pours thick and maroon, with a nice two finger head (dissipated while I retook the picture) that left puree residue. Aroma is blackberry, lime and vanilla ice-cream. Taste is blackberry and lime up front, followed by vanilla ice-cream, quite sweet, equally tart. Decent thick and creamy mouthfeel. Overall excellent.

Getting ducked up. This year we're giving away ducks at Halloween, while we eat candy. We also put a Bluetooth speaker in the tree and play ominous music from Spotify. One year we handed out mini-frisbees and the kids came home from school the next day and said they'd been banned. That's a win.

Brewers notes: As majestic as the tall California trees it is named after, Sequoia hops are oozing with tropical fruit character that is on full display in this batch of JJJuiceee Project! It would be hard to overstate how intensely hopped this beer is; our Juice Project series began as a cold hopping endeavor that has expanded to greater and greater levels of hop saturation overtime. Most beers in this series carry over8#/bbl in the dry hop, and thus, the hop saturation is marvelous. You will enjoy the juice-like orange color of this beer and notes of mango sherbet, citrus gummies, and overripe pineapple. We hope you enjoy it in good health and in the company of those you love.

Can poured into Tree House Cape Cod glass , hazy orange, one finger dense white foam cap,

    Aroma is tropical fruits, peach

Taste is tropical fruits , mango, pineapple

    Smooth , subtle hop kiss

    Good beer

Allagash saison. Fantastic. Aromas and flavors of big banana, bubblegum, lemon, orange, pear, apple, peppercorn, clove, pine, rye, bread, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Medium yeast spiciness and lt-med pine/earthy bitterness on the finish. Medium high carb and light med body. Fairly crisp clean refreshing finish. Balanced bready grainy malt and sticky resinous hop mouthfeel. Lingering resin dryness and minimal hop astringency. A great Americanized style with the cascade/Northern brewer/bravo hops. Fantastic balance of intense yeast complexity, malt, hops. A little too bitter but otherwise wonderful style example. 4.25

Pühaste - Midnight Macchiato Bourbon BA

330ml waxed bottle served in a tulip. Bottle is dated "best before" 06.04.27. Batch 458 (possible that it's 468, hard to read that character). Bought it in Vancouver, BC a couple months ago.

Pours black, still, with a tiny, thin, dark tan ring of head. Smell is super rich milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, booze, with a ghost of oak.

Taste is sweet molasses / vanilla / burnt toffee, strong chocolate and a little char. Sweet, but not overpowering.

Mouthfeel is thick, sticky, chewy, with a hint of grittiness. Overall, this is very nice, but very rich, and I wish my wife was splitting it with me.

This evening it’s Luppolo Sbarbatella Keller Pilsner. Luppolo is a brewery in Vancouver, BC.

Pours a straw gold with moderate head that dissipates slowly to a thin irregular film at the top of the beer.

Bready cereals on the nose with a hint of lemongrass.

Taste follows closely. Lemon, lemongrass and a melange of faint herbal notes on top of a light grainy malt.

The body is moderate with a crisp effervescence. Enjoyable.

This is a great Pilsner from a brewery that I haven’t had much experience with. I’m glad a great trade partner out there sent this my way.

    Cheers!

My 6 year-old son was whining about helping with the decorating for Halloween a couple days back. All he wanted to do was watch TV. He watches too much TV. I said, decorate one small pumpkin and you can watch some TV. This was what he did. Minimal effort, but I can’t help but think it’s really good. Two stickers and a thin black line, yet you know exactly what this snarky little pumpkin is thinking!!

Southern tier caramel pumking. Nose is a lot sweeter than the taste and pretty buttery/diacetyl heavy. Lots of butter toffee and pumpkin pie. Taste is pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, butterscotch toffee, Graham cracker crust, wood, peppercorn, clove, pine, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earth. Lt med pine/herbal bitterness and cinnamon spiciness on the finish. Medium carb and medium full body. Balanced creamy bready malts and sticky spices in the mouthfeel. Lightly slick diacetyl. Lingering sticky spice drying with no cloying/astringency. Mild increasing warmth of 8.6%. Amazingly balanced and smooth sipping. Not as exceptional as the base beer but getting there. 4.36

    Tilmans Pilsner

330ml bottle served in a pilsner glass. Bottle is dated 01.03.24, which I assume is the best before date, and probably is March, not January. I brought this back from my trip to Europe last month.

Pours slightly hazy golden with a medium to small head, settles into a coarse layer. Smell is grass and bread with a slightly spicy undertone.

Taste is a nice balance of light grain and spicy / grassy hops with a bit of a lemon zip to it.

Mouthfeel is light and airy. Overall...this is really nice.

Long time, NBWers. It’s the best time of the year just about, thought I’d saddle up this Saturday evening. No golf today. Rain. Surprise! Nonstop rain all season, it has really sucked, however, here’s a nice pint.

East Hartford brewing - Money Penny

Looks awesome. Nose is malty and loud, lots of sharp chocolate and sweet malt. Very approachable up front.

Taste does not follow. Clean and sharp. There’s definitely pleasant sweet malt character, but it’s very nuanced and tidy. Maybe some bitterness early but leads into coconut and brown sugar. Bitter chocolate. Tasty.

Finish is dry and clean. A hint of cocoa powder. Coconut. Malty and sweet but then tidy and clean. Very approachable.

As is always the case, the oats make this +- 8% beer drink like it’s 10%

    Good evening NBWers

Enjoying some lovely fall air and watching mistress moon cross the still light and blue sky.

Found out this was a fresh hop and I've been pleased with the results!

    Offset Bier - Simcoe

No canning date, though guesstimating around 9.20+

Purchased from the brewery cooler for about $4

Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass.

Pours a hazy bright yellow with a fine white foam cap and excellent spiderweb lacing. 4.25

Intensely strong herbaceous hop aroma. Bright citrus rind. 4

Similar intense piney and herbal/woody bitterness. Both expanded upon each as it warmed up. 4

Lightly creamy, filling body with matching carbo and heavy lingering hop oils. 4

Overall a nice fresh hop IPA, and excellent lesson on tasting exactly what Simcoe is. It's certainly something I'll be able to easily identify in the future. Not necessarily a first grab for me in the future, but I'd enjoy it again. 4

    Be back soon. Cheers!

Well, it's was rainy so it must be time for a new beer... Did some indoor puttering - water change in the 55 gallon aquarium and a general clean up, started converting a leaking 30 gallon to a terrarium to experiment with. Watched the Badgers steal a victory. I was glad to see OSU beat Penn State, although UW may rescind my MSc for that sentiment...

I'll say it's Old Beer Saturday with this one I found while spelunking in the kitchen:

Oxbow La Griseta, 2016 vintage. Sugar Rush Peach hot peppers to the left, jalapeño to the right. Simple salt and vinegar pickle that can be ground up as a sauce base. The sugar rush are surprisingly hot.

It pours quite clear. I suspect any suspended stuff sits in a hard lump at the bottom of the bottle by now. Yelliw straw color. About a half inch of desne white foam that falls to about a quarter inch and hangs. Plenty of replenishing bubbles rise from the bottom.

I'm gonna guess this has lost a little pop, but there's no sign of oxidation and we'll see about the rest.

Smell - wheat, grain, Belgian yeast, earthy. Citrus lemon and mild spice. Very faint, and quite possibly imaginary, Oxbow funk.

The taste is slightly sweet, a more biscuity malt, some wheat tang, yeast. There's a fairly assertive lemon taste that rides high and persists. I get peppery spice as the lemon fades, but the lemon doesn't quite surrender and lingers well after the swallow. It's quite tasty. If I look hard enough I can convince myself there's a slight funk, but it's barely there and maybe subjectivelt driven by the expectation that an Oxbow saison usually has some funk.

Light and effervescent, but not overdone on the bubbly bit. Starts a tad sweet, finishes dry. Minimal kiss of bitterness. The citrus and peppery notes linger pleasantly. As usual for Oxbow, this could sit on any dinner table with just about any cuisine.

Sooo...it obviously hasn't suffered much if at all after wandering around the house since 2016, but I wonder if it has actually gotten...better? If there was any wild funk, it's certainly melded into the overall flavor. I can't find intel that says this beer was hit with Brett or Lacto (well, it isn't even close to sour), but Oxbow does spontaneous and mixed fermentations so it must be there, right? Well, it's very good, maybe a little strong on the lemon but thats really nitpicking. As it sits, in its dotage, I'm going to go 4.0 to 4.25 on this.

Gravity - Red Giant "royal red ale"

750ml waxed bottle served in a tulip. Bottle #36/239. Bought it at the brewery in Budapest a few weeks ago.

Pours a muddy brown with very little, very fine, creamy head. Mostly still, not much movement happening. Smell is wood and dark fruit, maybe some cherry. Not quite toffee, not quite nuts, somewhere in between.

Taste is interesting. There's a red wine fruitiness, strong woodiness, moderate molasses sweetness. Something slightly jammy. Oaky astringency.

Mouthfeel is thick but not heavy, somewhat dry. Overall, interesting and good, and not really sure what style I would place it in.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. No date on the can. Pours black with a bit of fuzzy brown head. Not much though. The nose is chocolate, nuts, vanilla, definitely a nice roasty note,

The taste is fantastic. Creamy vanilla, marshmallow, milk chocolate, slight dark fruit, slight sweet toffee, and lactose. Really enjoying this one!

    Happy weekend all!
I have been getting over a nasty cold ( or something) and have not had a beer in over a week.
    I know, right?
So I thought I would start with something new and relatively light- a Baltic Porter that I just found today.
A pastry porter you say? Well, there is no such category yet. But it sure tasted like one.
The pour was like black coffee with a carbonation hiss, which caused me to pour gently. I needn’t have worried, that hiss was the full extent of the carbonation. Very odd.
The smell is lost on me, stupid Covid.
The taste is all about the additives; mallow and graham and chocolate. I suspect some porter was leveraged in there but it was not prominent.
The feel suffered from lack of carbonation, but the light viscosity went well with the flavors.
I may try one at the brewery just to see if the can I got was “off” somehow, and will modify my review accordingly, if needed.
Ah well, they can’t all be amazing, right?

Not technically a new beer to me, as it's one I've enjoyed for quite some time, thought long overdue for a review and rating from me.

    Talisman - Uplifted

Purchased from the Grocer for $4

Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass while warming.

Pours a fair caramel brown with some nice red tint when held up to the light. Generous 2F sand colored head that settled into a hair of a ring. Eagerly returns with gentle agitation. 4

Lightly smoky wood, toasty malt and lightly burned caramel. It's pretty great imo. 4.25

Caramel, toasty bread, glazed brown sugar, earthy and woody hops. Fuggle if I had to guess. Nearly spot on for the style. 4

Light prickling carbo, and fairly thin body, truly it's only downturn overall as it's nice otherwise, but hey gotta make what you can with dumb liquor laws. Froth on it is nice however. 3.75

Overall if this weren't limited by ABV I think it could contend with some of the greats. That being said it is unique in its composition as a 'session Scottish/wee heavy(light) ale.' I'll keep buying it as long as it doesn't skyrocket in price like it's siblings because it hits that Scotch ale spot nicely. I'll likely finish off the bomber for breakfast and may have additional thoughts then. 4

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Well, after a shit show work week, it's time for the weekend for me, though it will only be tomorrow, because I'll be back at it Monday again. It has been crazy and weird, and I'm hoping for a normal week next week, though I won't hold my breath. I love my job, and the company I work for so damn much. That being said, we've got some damn issues right now finding help that wants to work, and will stick with the job, and show up on time.

    It's a whole new world!

Well, to deal with the insanity, I thought I'd go a bit bigger tonight, and it's something I picked up in Wisconsin 2 weeks ago.
Wisconsin Dellsozoic Era: An Animatronic Diorama - Oliphant Brewing - Somerset, WI - Wee Heavy/Scotch Ale - 10% ABV

Ok, that's one heck of a long, and wild name. They are noted for having strange and wild names, and this is no exception. They also have wild artwork, as seen on the bottle.

I'm really enjoying this beer tonight, and it will be the only one I have tonight. Just such a great flavor that is kissed on the backside by a touch of smoke. I love smoked beers, and the more smoke the better, but this kiss of smoke is delicious also. Just a great all around flavor, and I'm glad I spent my money on it.

    From a bottle.

Very dark brown pouring beer. When pouring the carbonation was rising in the glass nicely to form a less than a 1 finger tan head. The head retention was fairly poor overall, and there's no lacing on the glass.
When pouring the beer, I was just hit with a ton of bourbon barrel notes that were quite pleasing. Up close I just get so much dark fruit notes - raisin, plum, dates. I get notes of caramel, and toffee. There's one thing I'm really not getting and that is smoke. The bottle says it's a smoked wee heavy, and I'm surprised I'm not getting it in the aroma.
Taste - Oh, wow! There's so much going on here, and it is hard to describe it all well. I get a peat like flavor starting this beer off. I get lots of caramel and toffee toward the front, that are combined with bourbon notes. The middle is more of the dark fruit, with pleasing raisin and plum. The back is where the pleasing flavor of smoke pops in, and pops in are the right words for this flavor profile. It reminds me of a pleasing bonfire, but not overpowering.
The body is quite pleasing. There's a slight bubbly feeling in this beer, right away, that hits the back of my throat. Smooth body, but there's just a faint warming on the backside to let you know to take this beer slow.
I am a fan of this style, and I'd say that this is a well made beer of the style. Just hits the mark well.

Be back tomorrow sometime for at least one more new beer. Cheers all.

It's Sunday, how about another beer. Well, this is from last night, not drinking this early.

    Adventurous Brewing Hefeweizen
    [IMG]
Appearance: Slightly hazy pale yellow, big head.

Smell: Dominated by cloves and mild lemon.

Taste: A little hoppy bite, some lemon notes, mild wheaty sweetness and mild clove, a little more tanginess around the edges.

Overall: Adventurous is more known for their hazy IPAs but I wanted a “session” beer for football. The hefeweizen is tasty enough. Kind of a mild take with maybe a little more hop bite than your typical hefeweizen.
