Another new beer from Henderson in Toronto. An Imperial Old Ale. Pretty Nice. Reminiscent of some big Belgians.

Poured a 473ml can into a tulip. A one finger head on a slightly hazy reddish brown. The head diminishes to a layer. Some lace strings.
Mild malt smells. Sweet dark fruit.
The taste is again dark fruit. toffee. Dark Christmas cake as it warms. Raisin.
Very smooth. medium body and light carbonation.
An excellent Old Ale. Smooth and well balanced. Complex. A bit boozy.

My new to me beer this morning is from Hoppin’ Frog Brewery, Akron OH - Whiskey Barrel Aged Outta Kilter, Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy, from an IP trade in Columbus this past summer:

Best By Date 3/9/25. Poured at 53°. Thin off white head leaves a long lasting island of micro dots and thin ring, otherwise poor cap retention; no lace; pale brown/rusty/copper color with some clarity. Nose is caramel malt and whiskey; perfumey esters as beer warms. Sweet whiskey and caramel entry; candied orange peel on backend. Medium minus body; moderate minus carbonation; no warmth from 8.2% abv; dry wooden barrel tongue coating. Overall, lots of residual sugars with a sweet candy like finish.

A good tasting beer…I’d drink again…but a bit sweet for me.
    Cheers y’all!

Clear, light copper body; dense, easy rising carbonation; thick, sculpted head, white and long-lasting; thin foam rings orbiting the glass interior. Fine, almost floral aroma; light herbal touches. Light biscuit malt base flavor; very mild herbal back note; lightly bitter. Medium-heavy body; light, velvety mouthfeel; soft and creamy on the palate; light touch of alcohol warmth.

This must be one of the finest imperial pilsners I've had the pleasure of trying. Many of my past experiences seemed to come across hot and unbalanced. Boiler created a beauty with this one. Nicely balanced and an impeccable appearance, very pleasing to the eye and the nose. The taste is wonderfully nuanced and complex. The beer finishes with a heavenly full and rich mouthfeel. A stunning beer.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

...I'm not sure, but I may have accidentally ordered two extra cans of this beer (four total)...glad I did...

...I first learned about Boiler Brewing Co. while staying overnight in Lincoln, NE (on my way to my first trip to Sheboygan)...god, what beautiful beers I experienced there...!!!...on my second trip to Sheboygan this past May, I contemplated going back to the brewery, but it just didn't happen...I'm glad that Tavour has been offering some of their beers of late...I highly encourage a visit if anyone has some time to spend in Lincoln...

Good mor...err, afternoon, Weekenders! Good to see the thread already in full swing!

Today's first new-to-me beer is Lawson's Fayston Maple Imperial Stout - whiskey barrel aged with coffee.

The only other Fayston variant I've had is the rum barrel aged. I'm not a huge fan of rum, but I still thought it was an excellent beer. This one, however, should be right up my alley!

Narrator: "It was not right up his alley."

Yeah, this one just doesn't come together quite right for me. The coffee is dominant on the nose and the palate - not unpleasantly so, mind you, but in an absolutely unbalanced fashion. If what you really want is a COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE stout, then this delivers.

On the palate, it's coffee first, maple syrups second, and everything else a muddled, forgotten, distant third.

Does it taste good? Yeah, really good, but for my preference, I would prefer more from the whiskey, more from the malt base, and even a touch more from the maple.

A quiet weekend. I'm planning on drinking beer and watching football.
Today's new beer is Landspeed, a Belgian Wit from Salt Flats Brewing, descfribed as "a delicately balanced wheat beer brewed with Orange Peel and Coriander."
Gold color, clear not cloudy. Thin white head, no lace.
Not much aroma. Some sweet fruit, kind of grainy.
Not much taste either. Some orange. Faint coriander.
    Crisp mouthfeel.

    G'morning NBW!
    Here we go.
Milk Truck Latte Stout by Mother Earth Brew Co.

12 oz can from Trader Joes.
She's a looker. Deep dark, nearly black and capped with a solid khaki head that asserts 2+ fingers in height. Solid retention, clumpy lacing.
Nose is hypnotic. Smooth, creamy latte that has a gentle sweetness and a round, velvety coffee roast. Divine.
Taste follows the nose well, but I think it feels tamped back by a lackluster mouthfeel. It feels restrained due to this and seems to limit the flavor's ability to fully present.

Oclock Brewing (France) ‘Baden Power’ BBA Imperial Stout

33 cL can. (apparenty not retired in 2022, as shown in the DB.)
The 2023 version is 11.5% ABV.
Poured into a snifter, in Toulouse, France. A one finger foam sits above black brew, micro bubbles hover.,.
Nose is dark stone fruits, oak, black strap molasses, charred malt.
Taste is wide awake alcohol forward, the hops and dark fruit notes weave their way through, with oak barrel, leather, licorice, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, then booze hits again. The finish reveals subtle bourbon, a hint of oaky char, leaves a sweet lingering oil.
Mouthfeel is rather thin, medium carbonation.
Overall, a decent brew that has Russian Imperial Stout overtones.
    I rate it 3.98 / 5.,,

Triptych Brewing, Our Pilsner Project. 5.2 % ABV.

A small brewery out of Savoy Illinois. Just south of my hometown of Champaign.

Pours a crystal clear golden/yellow color, or as my old friend that ran a homebrew shop use to say...They nailed the color.. A dense white head forms with good retention and lace. This is a looker.
A simple aroma of grains and baked bread. That remind me of sourdough. A touch of earthy, and grassy hops.
Taste wise, like the nose, baked bread and sourdough. A touch of honey like sweetness. Earthy, grassy hops that leaves a lingering bitterness. Which balances and dries everything out.
A light to medium body. Effervescent carbonation that becomes very smooth as this breaths. Super clean and finishes wonderfully dry. I can drink a lot of this.

Easily the best offering from Triptych that I have had. It is simple overall, with a less is more approach. Really balanced, super clean and dry. A very nice Pilsner.

Overall score is 4.09, and might be a bit better than that. Easy A-.

Another one of those beers that somehow slip through the cracks and I never rated it.

Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body was is a clear orange-yellow with a nice fluffy white head. Good lacing through the tasting.

Aroma is pine and danky hops. I'm in.

Taste follows nose and has a crisp, bitter focus. Strong pine and dank flavors are up front then a malty backbone appears to balance the bitterness.

Mouthfeel is good. Strong carbonation but soft finish with a pleasing lingering bitterness.

Another good IPA for fans of bitterness.

Alright! Fed & watered and ready for a new brew. I will suffer from option anxiety if I stare too long into my beer fridge. Here's a Collab btwx Blackstack/Pinthouse Pizza Amarillo By Morning Strait WCIPA. This the first time I've seen a canning date on a Blackstack can 12/01/23 and it's on the side, center label, buried in text. NTL, it is pretty fresh and is delish. Cheers!

Going with something different for new beer #2: And Hey, Fuck 2023 Too, a 9.7% ABV TDH IPA from Abomination.

Abomination started the "Fuck 20xx" series with, naturally, Fuck 2020. Given that every year since 2020 has continued to suck, they've made it a holiday tradition, as it were, with Fuck 2021 As Well and Fuck 2022 While We're At It joining the lineup.

Abomination makes two styles exceptionally well: pastry stouts and NE-style IPAs. I personally put them in the tier right below Tree House, Tired Hands, and Trillium for the latter; they're excellent, among the best you'll find (especially in a package store cooler!), but they're not quite the best of the best.

And Hey, Fuck 2023 Too fits the bill. I put off pouring a can of this one not just for the weekend, but also because I was a bit intimidated. My sinuses and gag reflex have gotten to the point that I almost cannot enjoy NE-style IPAs anymore, and certain varietals are almost no-go by default. Anything too dank or astringent and I start retching.

I rolled this dice on this one, and I've been well rewarded.

"Soft" may not be the word for this one, but it is very smooth. I'd put it near Trillium in terms of low but present astringency. It's got plenty of bite, but the body is still creamy and smooth. Mostly citrus up front, with a soft tropical fruit landing on the back third.

I probably got lucky with the varietals they used this time around, or perhaps with the specific age of the can, but this is both excellent and drinkable for me - not the same thing, nowadays, sadly. I can certainly recommend it without the slightest hesitation.

Today's new beer for me is an old favorite, but I haven't had it since I joined BA a few years ago, so it's time for a quick review and share with you all.

    Berkshire Brewing Drayman's Porter
    6.2% American Porter

Pours dark brown with a three-finger tan head that lingers.

Aromas of cocoa and coffee present first, with a bit of roast as well as it warms.

As with the aroma, cocoa and coffee are at the fore on the palate and are a bit sweet. With the introduction of air, though, some big roast characteristics come through as coffee, semi-dark chocolate, and slight char. These linger through the finish with slight hop bitterness further balancing out the sweetness.

Moderate and fine carb gives this some life on the tongue and helps avoid it feeling thin. Remarkably light-bodied for the flavor profile.

Overall, this is a really good porter. They've gone strong with the roast flavor and haven't hopped it to death to make it an American version. For me, this is a borderline robust porter.

That's it for me today. I'll likely be back on fridge clean-out duty tomorrow so maybe only a quick post of a macro.
