@zid Had the last beer you sent me in the trade yesterday. This one is wonderfully balanced between smoke and sweetness

Where are you in PA that you found that? I haven't seen the cherry wood near me in the KOP area.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I've recently enjoyed a few Rauchbiers from Tree House. Very well produced in my opinion, their Behind The Times (Dunkel Rauchbier), Slow Burn (Marzen Rauchbier), and Little Fire Oak (Helles Rauchbier) have great depth of body and mild smokiness. The Helles is light, virginia ham type aroma.

Sounds pretty good to my palate. Does the near 7% make it a little too dry that it negates that malt backbone?

Not sure, but I've had beers with similar or higher ABVs that weren't dried up.

Oh, no doubt -- when brewed right, but I've had some around that ABV that were over attenuated and it made the difference in wow or eh.

Really enjoying this pour at the Revolution Brewery.

    Revolution Tree Trees

    Brewery Notes:
$7.76 16 oz nonic glass draft pour. 6.4% ABV Smoked Red Ale.

Appearance: Clear Dark Bronze base, light carbonation, tan white creamy head leaves nice cover over the base and generous thin fine lacing. 4.0

    Aroma:
Bold and very enjoyable smoked malt dominates. Burning campfire wood smoke, honey smoked ham. Oh My! 4.5

    Taste:
Consistent with aroma, absolutely delicious. Smoke a little less intense than the aroma, and comes in a bit more balanced without giving up any flavor. Getting a bit of the red ale malt build, sweet bread, caramel, but the smoke flavors is the clear leader. Intense burning wood ashes, smoke honey baked ham. Absolutely delicious. 4.5

    Mouthfeel:
Hash smoke butter dry feeling above all, drinks light and easy in terms of alcohol. Smoke vs. sweetness from bread caramel vibes plus honey yields a wonderful blend. Dry wood ash finish with sweetness lingers. 4.75

    Overall:
Love coming across unexpected smoked beers, and this is a wonderful surprise encountered picking up my final season Deep Woods allotment. Will return for more in the next few days. 4.5

The one and only Smoke & Dagger. It doesn't fall into a specific style but nonetheless is fantastic.

Hmm, I was sure I did a comparison before, but cannot find it now. My palate wasn't fresh yesterday — will need to do a true side-by-side sometime soon. Judging from memory, Smoke & Dagger is the simpler of the two but has more smoke, while Trösten is sweeter and more nuanced.

Picked up a crowler of Notch's new Dunkel Rauchbier, The Black Lodge, the other day. Damn good but surprisingly subtle with the smoke

I bought this one expressly for this thread. I haven’t had this beer in ages, hadn’t seen it in ages. It is Highlander Smoked Porter from Highlander Brewing in South River, Ontario (see below). South River is about 300km north of Toronto. I’ve never been there. I’ve heard stories that the brewer is a tad curmudgeonly. Apparently, when asked if he has any IPAs, he says ‘no,’ and continues under his breath ‘city-its.’ He does not appear to be a fan of the trendy styles! I believe all that the brewer makes regularly are this smoked Porter and a scotch ale.

After a little digging I’ve learned that the original South River brewery was sold in 2020 and the new owners changed the.name to reflect the location. They are, sadly, in the process of closing. The original owner of Highlander has moved his production to a brewery in North Bay.

This is quite a bit better than I remember. The smoke is from ‘darker malts toasted in beechwood.’ I could use a little more. The Porter is creamy, chocolaty and despite the label saying otherwise, has a nice light bitter finish. I’m glad to have revisited it. Cheers!
