People share their disdain about them in every thread despite the topic. See post #41 for example :stuck_out_tongue:

edit: same applies to pastry stouts, see post #43.

I love me some Miller High Life and Coor's Banquet.
Not a thing wrong with them in my book. World class Pilsners they are not by any stretch of the imagination, but they have a time and place for consumption.
    Plus, the price is right-ish.
I don't get all the hate?
I'd much rather drink an AAL, than a Donut, Maple, Coffee, Vanilla, Marshmello, Blueberry Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout any day.

Stroh's was my go-to beer back in the 70's.

Have no idea what it tastes like now and have no interest in finding out. However, the times I tried it back in the mid to late 70's, I thought it quite good. It wasn't distributed out west at the time, but I got to try it during a two week military exercise in Virginia. I was surprised by how good it was... or at least by how much I liked it.

Not sure what the objection is. I quoted just the section of your post I was agreeing with and then added a bit more info. Anyone can read your entire post by simply hitting the arrow after:

I had nothing to add to the rest of your post, since I don't know which brewery that particular 12 oz. can came from (a side view would reveal "Reading, PA" or "Phila. PA" maybe even "Phila. PA and Cleveland, OH" on a Schmidt can?). As I understand it, all the cans from the numerous revivals of the brand converted back to yellow/gold rings?

Gotta admit, I also didn't understand what the quotes around 'original' meant, so had no reason to comment on it. As I understand it, "OG" as used by @jonphisher is a modern slang abbreviation for "original gangster" (not Original Gravity ) meaning simply "original".

The can my friend gave the brewery owner was original in the context of being from the Reading brewery. I chose single quotes since it was not the very first can from the Reading brewery.

I'll just leave it at that.

LOL! Keep in mind Jack, that this was back in 1977 or 1978. There weren't a whole lot of other options back then. I tended to drink AALs pretty regularly, as that's all there was most places back then.

I was never a big beer drinker until Igot into craft beer. If I was out with friends I'd get a fire-brewed Strohs. Then I met Pete's Wicked Ale, 1st beer I really like, not sure if its made anymore. In the summer I'll buy an occasional locally brewed lager.

Ah, gotcha! Plus, their original can was filled when the beer was still branded "Old Reading", which, if someone at Sly Fox decides to revive (pretty sure the brewery admitted they tweaked the recipe when they dropped "Old"), will further confuse things when we discuss the new Old Reading beer or the older new Reading...

Another reason I hate AALs so much is the fact that (brace yourselves kiddies!) back in the 1970's and early 80's, That's All There Was For Beer! Schaefer used to sponsor a big dirt modified race, and we would campout and drink all weekend, but that beer was nasty! A lot of bars back then didn't even carry a Bud or Miller tap, unless it was Lite, but there'd be Genny, Genny Cream, Utica Club, maybe something exotic like Rolling Rock from far away Latrobe PA.

Miller was, mostly, our high school beer of choice ($2.13 per sixer, including sales tax, no deposit back then), but sometimes we'd fancy it up with Molson Golden or Michelob if we were trying to impress the females of the species. We'd grab 8 packs of 7oz bottles of mini long necks of Old Vienna for riding around the back roads, and toss the empties at road signs. It was a shocking development when the vaunted Coors started showing up.

So, having consumed lakes full of the stuff, once more flavorful beers started to make their presence known, we walked through that open door, and never looked back. Fuck fizzy, yellow beers!

There is too many people to ask individually but I’m curious is most of the dislike people keep voicing mainly addressed at the macro AAL. Or does this dislike also apply to the local attempts at AAL as well?

The quick, they taste bad, like water, no flavor comments I can see applying to a lot of the readily available AALs but I personally can’t see this being blindly applied to the style as a whole, or at least the local ones I’m thinking of.

Has the style been so hijacked that it has no merit at all to a lot of people?

There was a range of flavor in the AALs of the 70s. Likes and dislikes don't mean one beer was great and another "nasty". The conditions of consumption made a big difference, too. For example, the environment you cite for evaluating Schaefer likely wasn't optimum for enjoyment of the brew. When I and my young family went to the local bar/restaurant, the delicate draft Schaefer hit the spot with the spaghetti dinner.

I can promise you, one can of Schaeffer (gotta support the sport!) over the course of a 4 day weekend, was more than plenty. That can would always give us a fresh appreciation for the products from the fine folks on St. Paul Boulevard in Rochester.

Stuff was nasty. Probably the cheapest beer, and for a reason.

Amen. Similar experience for me, plus watching and listening to countless adds reminding us of how lucky we were to be drinking the best beer on the planet. Not that getting fed a constant stream of BS was exactly a novel experience, even back then, but...

Unfortunately, I do think most consumers associate the style with the large macro breweries. That's unfortunate and unfair, but there it is.

A number of craft breweries out here have been making AALs of late. I don't want to paint with too broad a brush, but the consensus opinion seems to be that they are somewhat better than the BMC of the world, but not worth the considerable upcharge. My understanding is that part of the allure of AALs for most consumers is the price.
