Hi, I'm a stout and porter enthusiast from Connecticut. I found this community while looking at beer reviews online and I was curious so here I am! I'm always looking for new recommendations so if anybody has any they'd like to share with me (particularly darker beers) then I'm all ears.

Also, if anybody can make me like IPAs you'll be my best friend forever.

    Good morning and Welcome!
Also a CT stout drinker here. Im coastal near New Haven.

Check out thr New England forum
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/new-england.10/
For lots of good regional info on breweries.
The site is great for learning about beers, meeting folks who like styles that you like and finding out about events and happenings near you.

There are quite a few solid breweries in Western CT. Not sure who may have a stout on right now. But NEBCO in Woodbridge has Bourbon barrel aged Stout Trooper at the brewery in Woodbridge. Easily worth the trip.

And why in the world do you need to love IPAs? So many other beers to drink!:sunglasses:

It's your good fortune that you found this site. Every craft beer lover should be a member here, so welcome to you.

In the Beer Talk forum you'll find threads about Porters, and a couple more about Stouts. Your learning process should center around your activity in the forums.

As for IPAs, just keep trying them. There is quite a variety in taste among them, mostly because there are so many different hops varieties that vary greatly in taste. You need to find the ones that are agreeable to your taste buds.

But another factor in learning to like IPAs is that the hop character fades pretty quickly, so look for IPAs that have a 'packaged/bottled/canned on' date, and don't buy anything that is older than 60 days from packaging. Also, don't take a chance on any IPA that isn't dated. A 'best by' date can be risky because you're trusting the brewery's advice. Buy from stores that offer singles so you don't have to commit to a 6-pack.

Lastly, if you haven't tried Bell's Two Hearted IPA yet, put it close to the top of your list. But check its date too. Bell's uses a Best By date, but it's well known that the date is 6 months from packaging, so you can figure out its age. Good luck.

    Welcome to the Site!
If you haven't already, find your way to the BEERS menu, (top of page on computer, in the main menu on a mobile device) then click on Styles. There are plenty of dark styles including a number of Stout and Porter classifications to choose from. Each style lists all of the examples in the data base. Clicking on individual beers gets you to the reviews that you've been finding online.
    Enjoy!

Thank you for your advice! I only just moved to CT from Westchester so I haven't had the chance to make the trip to the New Haven area just yet, but I will absolutely seek NEBCO out when I get out there.

And re: IPAs, I like to be open-minded about all styles of beer, but it's one style that I've never been able to get into. I don't need to love them, but I do want to find at least a couple I can tolerate on their own.

Thank you for your warm welcome and advice re: IPAs. I'll keep an eye out for Bell's, and I appreciate the information about the packaging. It's these nuances about beer that I never learned until coming here.
