    12% barleywine

Poured from bottle, the body is a dark brown. Not much head and no lacing for this English style barleywine

Aroma is cognac barrel and a wee note of maple. Taste follows nose and the flavors are more powerful than the aroma. The aging in cognac barrels imparts a lovely flavor, soft and tasty without any burn, which marries well with the maple. As the barleywine warms, the sweetness increases as more maple is tasted. Added flavors of toffee, oak and dark chocolate.

Good mouthfeel, soft and luxurious. Not much carbonation.

Delicious barleywine that was a pleasure to sip. Thanks to @HoppingMadMonk for this barleywine

Big Lake Brewing The Undertaking Imp Stout, 13.0% ABV; 4.03 overall

This beer is courtesy of @Whyteboar via the NBW BIF#18 LIF

Pours an effervescent mahogany tinged Chestnut with one finger of fast falling mocha colored head. Viscous, some head retention & lacing

S: Dark fruits, roastyness, smokiness once warmed up, some boozyness late

T: Follows the nose, Baker's Chocolate, leafy & woody hops, & molasses up front, a touch of smokiness as well. Dark chocolate, vanilla, dryness, with leafy hops as this beer warms up, a touch of Banana Taffy & caramel as well. Finishes dry, sweet, with woody hops, figs & dark cherry

MF: Chewy, slight carbonation, warming as Hell

Fantastic no-nonsense Imperial Stout, a sipper for sure

Seems all the cool people are already tapping into the Oktoberfest beers and it was really warm today here so I broke down and broke one open.
Now I remember I prefer marzens as this is refreshing (which was the hope!) but the depth of flavor was rather shallow. Light (think Wonder white bread) bready malts and no discernible hops.
That stated, it was cellar temp, not refrigerated and it did go down *very* easily, and could easily see myself drinking a liter or two amongst friends. Will definitely refrigerate the rest. Maybe this one too is better cold.
    Cheers!

    750 ml. bottle.
    Brewed January 2020
    Bottled 08.10.2020.

Moderate pour yields a one inch light pink head over a mahogany body with a little lacing.

Nose is slightly tart with a bit of tart cherry aromas and a tad red wine aromas.

Taste is accessibly tart with cherry and slight red wine flavors giving way to a little red wine tannin at the nearly dry finish.

Nice, nearly full, mouthfeel with more than medium carbonation.

Overall, aged 4 years from bottling date with no issues.
Not sure if they still make this, but they should!
If you see this out in the wild, don't hesitate to grab it!!
    Cheers!!!

    Goose Island - Kaleidoscope cuvée

    14.7% strong ale

A cuvée of Imperial Stout, Oatmeal Stout, Rye Stout and Barleywine.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle, the body is jet black. Neither head nor lacing.

Aroma is sweet bourbon barrel with chocolate and figs.

Taste follows nose and adds notes of oak, dried dark fruit (figs, raisins). A substantial malty base balances the barrel sweetness to a substantial degree. The effect is a wall of flavor with a foundation of bourbon.

Mouthfeel is good: heavy but not cloying. Just enough carbonation to provide a tingle.

Tasty cuvée that pulls together various flavors to produce a luxurious sipper.

    Hi All.
Still busy as hell. But this weekend was a little taxing (to say the least). Took my oldest off to college. Definitely bittersweet. So proud of her. And SOOO looking for her to have her own adventures and more independence. Yet still, it's hard.

But I did try some local beer.
San Diego Brewing Co.'s Cold Brew Old Nut Brown

On tap at San Diego Brewing Company.
Beautiful deep, dark brown liquid capped with a much tan head. Great retention, layered lacing.
Nose is roasted malt, mild chocolate notes with some nuttiness. Full and very engaging.
Flavor follows the nose nicely with a firm roastiness and a smooth buttering out on the end.
Mouthfeel is medium heft with a nice nitro fluffiness.
Overall, a really nice nitro devoured brown ale.

    Greetings, fellow NBWers,

It's in the low 70s on this partly sunny evening. Been keeping busy with work and packing/purging this past week. Why packing/purging? On Thursday evening, I received word that my application for a new apartment within walking distance of the job I started at back in May has been officially approved, so now I have to organize my first move in over 20yrs!

Last week I drank new beers and then forgot to post to the thread! If y'all are desperate for woemad-involved beer content, I suppose you can look through my reviews, but this is a new weekend for new beers!

Having said that, yesterday involved officially reviewing two beers for the first time on BA that I had previously consumed (and in one case, rated) that are now being packaged.
For starters, yesterday, was a biere de garde brewed a few miles from my hometown. I'd had it on several occasions when I've been down that way visiting the Parental Units, but now, for the first time, it has become available in Spokanistan in cans:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24517/69828/?ba=woemad#review
No, I did not originally enter it and misspell it "Bierre"! I had, however, done a quick rating of it without reviewing it several years ago on a visit to White Bluffs. It's not a style I drink on the regular, but I'd say it's a pretty nice American example of the style, well worth trying.

Then, last night, after dinner, I poured myself a can of a local BBA imperial Stout that I'd totally forgotten I'd already tried, but once again, I'd not officially written a review, so here's The Fathers Love (version 2.0):
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/57448/684660/?ba=woemad#lists
Pretty good adjuncted imperial Stout, but not quite great (a category that, these days, I'd reserve locally for such beers from Lumberbeard). Still, there's a lot to praise here, not least the relatively light touch used by the brewery with the vanilla beans. Often, vanilla tends to drown everything else out in a beer, but not here.

Back soon with what new beers I've drank today.

During today's 7am trip up the hill to Huckleberry's, in order to obtain a breakfast burrito, I grabbed a couple cans from their beer section. One of them was this WCIPA from local brewery Uprise, which was consumed a few hours later:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63795/714293/?ba=woemad#lists
I hadn't realized til today that Uprise is now packaging and distributing some of their beers. Really nice "new school" example of a WCIPA. Sure, it was grapefruity and piney, but there was hop flavor reminiscent of stone fruit as well. Delicious stuff.

So delicious that, as I found myself running errands this early evening nearby, I stopped in at the source and am having a rather delicious Czech Dark Lager, which I've just now reviewed:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63795/714352/?ba=woemad#lists
Czech Dark Lagers have become a favorite style of mine these last couple of years, and this one fits right in with the best local examples, which are very good, indeed.

Modern Times Chaos Grid Old Money Edition. Imperial stout aged in brandy barrels, Armagnac barrels, and sherry barrels. Comes in at 11.9% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a VERY thick black. No head. The nose is bloody amazing. Tons of brandy and Armagnac. Some vanilla and chocolate as well.

The taste is silky smooth. This is definitely dominated by the fruity barrels. Sherry is probably the dominant flavor for me. Sweet, with some vanilla and burnt toffee. A slight note of charred wood as it warms a bit.

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy. The carbonation is extremely low, so the aftertaste is super intense to me.

Flesh to Stone from Bottle Logic. An English-style barleywine aged in a combination of bourbon and peach brandy barrels. Comes in at 11.5% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is amazing. Toffee, vanilla, brandy, pears, apricots, and slight maple. The toffee is super intense and I love it.

The taste is also fantastic. Tons of caramel, vanilla, peaches, vanilla, maple, brown sugar, and a slight nutty note. Lovely.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a wonderful caramel candy.

im sharing Bright Path Brewing out of Jim Thorpe, PA and their Snakes-1 English porter. Been a while since I shared a beer and reviewed it, busy past week or two. But here we go!

    onto my review:
I am sampling a 12 oz can at cellar temp and poured into my .5L dimple mug. Picked up the beer at a shop in PA and am drinking it tonight. No date stamping on the label or the can.
the beer pours a dark cola brown and rests slightly darker in my glass. A slightly frothy beige head of 2 cm foams up in my mug. This foam fades to a sturdy edge layering and one large island in the center.
I get scattered lattice when I swirl or take a sip from the beer.
Aroma is heavy on roasted malt and some dark chocolate, with hints of grassy hops in the background. No hint of the low ABV on the nose.
First sip reveals a lighter body and smooth texture and very fine, gentle carbonation. Beer feels gentle on my palate, an easy drinker for sure.
Flavor is similar to the nose with a lot of roasted malts and dark chocolate. There is almost a charred malt note on the flavor and this lingers with a hint of bitterness too. Some hop character is here, but buried behind the roast and a light chocolate note. never any hint of the low ABV. An enjoyable sessionable porter. Very roasty , if that is what you like in a porter this is one you should try.

    Stonecloud/False Idol Collaboration Weekend At Bernie's IPA, 8.0% ABV ( I am listing it as a 2XIPA ); 3.97 overall

Pours a hazy gold with one finger of eggshell colored head. Average head retention& a little better lacing

S: Tropical fruit, a little bit of citrus, doesn't really stay strong throughout the pour

T: Guava, passion fruit, mango, a little dryness & a touch pineapple up front. Pomelo, pink grapefruit, passion fruit, pineapple & dryness as this beer warms up. Finishes a little dry with some pineapple, guava, passion fruit & a kiss of pink grapefruit. Almost a 4.5

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, good balance, some acidic notes

Easy drinking with nice flavor, the rest of the beer didn't measure up though. Very tropical
