Opaque, dirty and pale yellow body; dense and frothy head, white and long-lasting; thick web of foam marks the glass. Dull, stone fruit aroma; peaches and apricots; tangerine. Citrus flavors riding atop an oat-forward grain flavor; white grapefruit; citrus pith; bold bitterness but not overwhelming. Heavy mouthfeel; velvety and chewy; medium-heavy alcohol dryness.

One should always start their morning out with some fruit juice. As I don't have any, this is a fair substitute, especially while starting a brisket smoke for a neighbor (Mrs. BeerGoot and I get to join in later this afternoon or evening). But, back to the beer - it definitely presents a powerful citrus-forward character while remaining very drinkable even with its relatively high ABV. A breakfast of champions!

...thanks, Tom...a very nice beer...I appreciate your generosity...

It's good to have a long weekend, because NBW will have extra day(s)!

Another new arrival to Minnesota, Pizza Port Mongo:
    Appearance: Clear gold, big head.

Smell: Mild tropical fruits, low aroma.

Taste: Mild sweetness followed by moderate tropical fruit flavors. Kind of light body and flavor for a DIPA. A little more citrus comes out as it warms up.

Overall: Pizza Port has shown up in MN so I got some singles to try. I thought I already had Mongo, but Port Brewing also has a beer called that—I tried it but did not review since that one was old tasting. This is under a month from canning, tastes OK, but kind of low on flavor for your double IPA.

Can a beer with frozen fresh hops really be considered a "wet hop" IPA? That's the question Sierra Nevada (already famous for injecting confusion between the terms "fresh" and "wet" hops) begs you to ask with this take on their classic "Extra IPA," Torpedo.

I'll leave it to others to answer that question for themselves, and simply tell you what I think of this beer, which is:

    It's really good!

That comes with a caveat. Like many (most? All?) variations of Torpedo, it's more sweet and tropical, and less bitter and piney, than the original. In this case, I suspect that has little to do with the relative freshness of the hop, and more to do with the specific varietal chosen (YCH 301 Trial). In other words: while this is a very tasty beer, I'd be hard-pressed to identify it as a variant of Torpedo if not for the label.

Aroma is subdued and almost soapy. Some (but not much) resin, stone fruit, a bit of citrus, and even a hint of berries. Malt base is neutral and almost grainy, with just a touch of rye-like spice. No toast or caramel expression. More flavorful and expressive on the palate, with more resin, and more general tropical fruit, along with hints of ruby red grapefruit and lemon zest. Malt base is still fairly neutral, with some cracker and honey coming through, along with a bit of peppery spice. Bright but not overly bursting green herbal notes.

Super drinkable on the palate. This thing is absolutely crushable, but at 7% ABV, one should think twice (to paraphrase: you spent so much time thinking about if you COULD crush three of these IPAs in a row, that you forgot to consider if you SHOULD). Hop oils linger on the long finish.

Overall, a very good beer. I would love to have this as an on-tap option, and I'll enjoy the other two from the variety pack. At the same time, I don't feel this is the best Torpedo can be, nor do I feel it's particularly special. I would prefer more distinct hop expression, especially with a beer marketed as uniquely wet-hopped.

Translucent apricot yellow body; thick head, white and densely foamy, fat fingers and rings of foam cling to the glass. Fruity esters on the nose; berries, peach and apricot elements. Weak, somewhat watery taste despite notes of raw oak and subtle esters; finishes with a moderately intense bitterness. Medium body; coarse on the palate; very dry overall.

I had high hopes for this upon the pour and the aroma, but the rather weak flavor quickly killed any unbridled enthusiasm I might have had for this beer. Don't get me wrong. The beer is drinkable, certainly isn't bad tasting, but there is a lack of depth to the taste while the mouthfeel also feels off for the style.

It certainly has some very nice places. The river is 10 minutes from my house (the Flat) but the Grand is about 2 minutes. Great if you’re into kayaking!

The standout with the appearance is the amazing lacing that was left behind by the ample head. Otherwise, it's a good looking beer...cloudy translucent yellow.

Aroma has grapefruit, wild onion, and maybe some faint pine.

Taste is grapefruit and mixed fruit. Nice long finish.

Overall, while I'm not really an IPA fan, I'm enjoying this one.

Coal black body, opaque; deep, dark brown head, fat, frothy bubbles, recedes to a paper thin coating with dark tan hues atop the beer. Aroma infused with dark roasted grains, bitter chocolate with cocoa; fresh ground coffee beans. Fabulous flavor; milk chocolate; slight bourbon quality; sweet, roasted malt grain. Heavy body; slick and silky on the palate.

Depth and nuance define the signature qualities of this beer. It is richly sweet with a fine barrel aged whiskey offset. The beer demonstrates incredible balance and complexity with each sip. Truly delightful!

Not going to go into a whole big review, but I’m glad for a three day weekend with this post because:

    1) we are carrying new beer weekend into a third day

    2) I have always wanted to try this beer. It will be one of at least two top 52 BA beers I drink today. And damn, is this one good!

A three day weekend lends itself well to reviewing another new to me beer - Jackie O’s’ “overcoil” an imperial stout aged 20 months in 3 different bourbon barrels:

Poured at 57°. Fizzy dark tan head with some mixed rocky bubbles; poor cap retention that leave small islands of micro dots; soapy lace with agitation; medium legs on swirl; black body with ruby edges. Nose is straight up bourbon; mild boozy retro nasal. Bourbon, oak, bittersweet dark chocolate; slightly phenolic. Silky smooth feel; medium minus body; light carbonation; some mouth warmth from 12.9% abv; not adjuncty. Overall a typical Jackie O’s impy barrel aged stout; drinks thin for abv; boozy hot linger.

    4.25 | 4.0 | 4.25 | 4.0 | 4.25
    Score: 4.17 rDev: -6.7%

A good BBA stout. I wouldn’t turn it down, but I won’t seek it out. Cheers y’all!

...I still recall canoeing the Au Sable River back in my Boy Scout days...there have been a few other epic adventures with my friend Tom (USAF acquaintances, but lovers of all things nature-centric, philosophical and musical)...he grew up in Grand Rapids but now lives about one mile north of Torch Lake on a defunct dairy farm he purchased years ago...runs a coffee business there now...we had many a memorable beer experience back in West Germany (Sembach - where we met) as well as in PA when we both worked at Raven Rock (ANMCC) back in the day...

...Tom and I started our home brewing experiences together back in PA...neither one of us has home brewed in ages now, but we both love a good pilsner...the now closed Bischof Brauerie out of Winweiller, Germany was always a favorite of ours...

Brewers notes :Nordertor is a Northern German-style Pilsner inspired by similarly crisp lagers originating along Germany’s border with Denmark. Named after Flensburg’s northernmost gate and fermented with an heirloom yeast, this traditional decocted pilsner features liberal German-grown Saaz hops that lend it light floral and citrus flavors and aromas. These combine with the beer’s complex malt bill to create a traditional, highly sessionable and bitter pale lager. Floral and citrusy, this highly aromatic, crystalline pilsner is hopped with all German Saaz & Magnum hops, for a piquantly bitter flavor profile.

    Clear gold
    Bright Grassy aroma
Bright Grassy taste with light lemon citrus , gentle breadiness notes
    Crisp , clean dry finish

    Delicious beer, revommended

...the Au Sable canoe trip involved a bus ride from Mansfield, Oh to where we put in and where we exited the river, probably late 60s or early 70s...a two or three day adventure (as I recall)...

...and, like you, I appreciate stories...it is amazing how many times that are lattices of coincidence (yes, a 'Repo Man' allusion)...so many BAs seem to have like reference points re: beer, music, travel, job experiences, etc., etc., etc...

3 Sheeps, Top Shelf Collaborations Grand Lac Belgian Quad barrel aged in 1792 bourbon barrels. 14.0 % ABV, 16oz can. Canned 11/08/2023. Brewed with figs and molasses.

I'm not sure what this beer is? Is it a variation of Veneration or Veneration 1792?

Look: slightly murky very dark brown body but is semi transparent dark reddish amber when held to the beer light. Has a decent head with a aggressive pour but it dissipates rapidly and completely.
Smell: smells very good. barrel, figs/dark fruit, sweet malt
Taste: Figs is the main flavor. Some molasses. Towards the finish there is hint of earth. The barrel is mild but gets stronger as it warms. The barrel is mostly buried but comes out on the finish. Rather sweet beer, smooth, ABV is well hidden.
Body is medium maybe slightly thin, smooth

Tasty stuff and sure looks the part. It’s true to style, not much new world hop presence, more in the vein of an old English pint. There’s a smidge of funk all through which I quite enjoy.

Malt sugar, herbs, sweet sugar and some hop, pithy sort of character. Fuggles-esque. Finishes a smidge dry - caramel earl grey. Great pint!

    Alchemist — Heady Topper

Technically, this is not a new beer for me, but this one was a one-of-a-kind experience.

It pours bright orange with a sticky white head and a decent lacing.

The nose is of ripe fruit, malt, and hops.

The taste follows the nose with the addition of slight dank, sweetness, and muted hops.

A full-bodied mouthfeel completes the picture with a thick hop bitter aftertaste.

Overall, it is drinking amazingly well for a hoppy beer canned ... 13 months ago. That's right— this is the last can from a four-pack purchased on vacation in Vermont a year ago. School starts tomorrow, and it felt right to drink a vacation beer today.

Loved catching up on all the great posts and reviews through this afternoon. A few responses before diving in with my Labor Day selection.
    • @Whyteboar - Thanks for the kind words. I dig the name of your Sister Lakes selection. Glad you entered the beer and notes for the stout. I loved when Norwegian Kviek Yeast was popular for a hot minute, but never had a chance to try an stout, imperial or otherwise, brewed with it. Sounds like an interesting and enjoyable beer. Also, great river picture!
    • @Roy_Hobbs - That was in interesting review of Evil Twins' Even More Bible Belt. I'm only familiar with their collaborations with Prairie Artisans (Bible Belt) via the bottle. Glad the metallic aroma didn't appear to impact your taste flavors.
    • @MacMalt - Loved your entire post, and you made the Cookie Monster beer I'd probably pass over at a store sound very appetizing and one I would like to try.
    • @jonphisher - Very good guess, but slightly off as you'll see below. Best wishes on your return to school this year. I concur on the need for more solid Rye IPAs / Amarillo IPAs in general.
Going to finish my beer contribution with this selection from Summit Brewing which opened in 1986. It is the second largest Minnesota brewery behind the aforementioned Schell's which I would also love to take a crack at.

Need to hit Minnespolis / Saint Paul in a future summer. I've only visited Surly brewing. This offering is an IPA rated very good (88 / 3.94) on Beer Advocate.

My full review is linked above, and my overall impression is this is a 225-240 drive down the fairway. Met expectations, including Midwest malt. Would give this a second go, not sure if the six weeks since receiving dulled the hop sharpness. I suspect that may have played a role. All that said, I am enjoying this beer and would like to visit Saint Paul and this brewery to explore more. 3.75

Thank you so much Todd @cheeseheadinMinneapolis for a wonderful weekend of beers! I enjoyed all four of your selections.

Beautiful pour, copper and amber. Clear. Fluffy head, so pretty to look at.

This reminds me of the amber ales I drank as a youngster 9000 miles away. Malty but clean and balanced. Not filling. There’s an orange citrus flavor that reminds me a lot of an “active” cascade useage. Which I think of when I drank cascade in an old world beer in particular, where it has to step up and do a lot of the floral herbal work.

It’s often times just thrown into a hop bill but there’s this pithy, sweet but dry pine character just meandering around. This beer screams patience, patience to brew and patience to drink. Harkens back to the past, boats against the current and all that.

@jonphisher I grabbed this because you gave me fomo last year haha! Cheers folks
