I really shouldn't be working so much over the weekend, but I couldn't sleep, woke up at 03:30, and randomly decided to tackle a long overdue project: proper support for deleting places on BeerAdvocate, allowing us to finally cleanup hundreds of erroneous listings.

    How it works:
    • Delete = a soft delete (hidden), allowing it to be reversed
    • When a place is deleted, it'll no longer show up in lists or when searching for it on the site
    • Unless moved, any associated data (beers, ratings, etc) will also be hidden and not included in stats
    • I'll do my best to move associated user data, but this might not be possible in some cases (like reviewing a duplicate entry and then the original one or reviewing multiple entries for the same beer that needs to be merged)
As I told the mod team...I've still got a bit of work to do, but everything seems to be working and I plan on granting mod access soon. In the meantime, I'm doing some final testing by running through the report queue to handle some ancient entries and pushing supporting updates as needed.

(Please don't report any entries that have "duplicate" in the place name. Those will be handled soon, along with hundreds of previous reports.)

Bugs/issues or questions? Let me know.

Just cleaned up over 275 duplicate locations. Easy ones with nothing attached to them.

Going to take a break before hitting the more complicated entries.

@Todd, how does Delete differ from marking a Place as being Closed? It may be a matter of semantics but if a Delete is a "soft" delete and can be brought back, then isn't Closed a better operative word? Or am I missing your point?

Grounds for deletion would be a duplicate listing (most common), a listing that doesn't belong on the site (like a non-beer place), or other entry that was made in error or is simply no longer relevant. Marking it as "closed" (the old way) means that it's still searchable, indexed by search engines, and simply not accurate (especially if the place isn't actually closed).

And soft-deleting means that we still have a record of the entry. It's just not public anymore, but could be reversed if the action was done in error. Same goes for deleting beers, threads, and posts.

I read the Places frequently asked questions.

The one question I have based on the discussion above is what in your mind / BA constitutes a beer place vs. a “non-beer” place. We all my have different criteria in mind which may be too narrow or too broad vs. how you / BA defines a beer place worthy of adding here.

Perhaps clarification here and in the FAQ would help users know what they should and should not enter, and lessen work for you and your team in the future.

I debate this when deciding whether or not to add a place. There’s definitely some context needed—a few taps of mega craft (Sam Adams, NB voodoo, GI) might not do it for me on a good day, but if this is the only option for miles around? Yeah, I’ll add it.

A non-beer place is literally that; a place that doesn't produce, sell, or serve beer.

I agree, some context/guidelines are important. My grocery store has like 8 taps (good beer too), but I’d never add it as a “place”.

I'm just happy that we'll still be able to look up closed places. Sometimes a BA makes reference to one and I like checking out what I missed.

I can picture it now: Bud, Bud Lite, Miller, Miller Lite, Lone Star, Lone Star Lite, and two rotating handles of other macro…

    (Hopefully not!)
