End of the year quickly approaches, which has me reflecting on my beer spreadsheet and my 2024 consumption habits (at least, as far as Beer Advocate tracking is concerned.) For those of you who track your 'beer stats', what are your totals this year? How do they compare to previous years? Current 2024 Stats: Total beer reviews: 128 (102 less than 2023) Highest score: 4.79 Lowest score: 3.22 Average score: 4.0563 (lifetime average is 4.1001) Average BA score: 4.0526 (lifetime average is 4.047) rDev: 0.25% (lifetime average is 1.49%) My rDev has dropped over the years, which may indicate an improvement in my review skills, but it seems to more heavily be a feature of being the only review/rating of many local beers. Nevertheless, still interesting to see my lifetime average score dropping. My stats are also captured during the time of my review, meaning any alterations of a beer's score over time would not be captured. Since I'm a bit of a homer, I like to track my consumption of local beer (MO and KS): Missouri beers: 63 (49.22% of my total reviews this year) Kansas beers: 9 (7.03% of my total reviews this year) One trend I was really curious about is how has my 'consumption habits' changed since I wrote my first review on BA (Dec 8th, 2015.) I had a sneaking feeling it was on the decline, but wanted to see it compared in a chart: Consumption habits in 2018 (my peak) were not sustainable though. Average reviews per year: 342.1 I have probably ~60+ beers noted in my various notebooks, which would change my 2024 stats quite a bit. A very large majority (perhaps close to 90%) of them are MO beers too. We'll see if I get around to writing those reviews before years end. I'm close to filling up my main notebook, which means 2025 may see my switch to a new notebook - which is ready on standby for that moment. Link to 2023 stats thread. Link to 2022 stats thread.
Styles dropped from 120 in 2023 to 119 in 2024. (Just trying to keep it real after spending years searching to hell and gone for Happoshu. I'm okay. Really.)
To date this year I have reviewed 187 beers. As far as local beers go, PA accounts for 39 of those reviews, MD 17.
2024 461 new beers, down 22 from 2023, but there is still 13 more days. I try to have at least 1 new beer a day. Highest score: 4.66 Lowest score: 3.27
Because I drink so many sampler-sized beers when visiting new-to-me breweries I don't log most of them onto BA. However, I do log them in my notes which say that I had 192 beers when visiting those breweries. In 2024 I added 155 beers to BA (101 in 2023), but that number is likely only a few from the 192 that I reported above. I added rating/reviews for 99 Places to the BA database (mostly breweries) in 2024, and that compares with 29 in 2023 (I didn't travel as much). When visiting all of these new places in 2024 I added only one new state to my list (New Mexico) so I'm up to 40 now, although I have 9 more that I can unofficially add that occurred prior to joining BA.
Total 2024 beer reviews: 272 Highest score: 4.75, for a beer from Salt Lake City, Utah. Lowest score: 2.13, for a beer I had in Istanbul, Turkey. To-date overall (2020-2024) BA score is 3.93. What that tells me is the majority of the beers I drank (drunk.,) in Europe for the full year I’ve been here rate under 4. Haven’t analyzed that fully yet, but I suspect I’ve grown weary of Belgian ales, imposters, and watery regional Euro lagers.
229 beers reviewed so far in 2024 (compared to 276 or 2023) Highest rated was Double Barrel Liminal Space at 4.81 Lowest rated was Back Away Banana Breath from Cellarmaker at 3.03 Most reviews were in these categories: 81 American imperial stout 39 English barleywines 23 American barleywines
Percentage of reviews by style category over time (for the most common style categories) Percentages of IPA substyles just within IPA category over the years
Way more lagers and “classic styles”, about same barleywines and stouts, barely any ipas or kettle sours. Been loving it
224 Reviews so far, might make 230 before the calendar flips. I've been all over the place style wise but I did review 35 Belgian style beers, way more than any previous year. For this I blame the @Beersnake and his Belgian Beer thread. I need to start dropping into that again.
206 new reviews, quite a bit down from previous years, which at my age is no bad thing. Did rate a JW Lee's 2001 Harvest ale at 4.87, my highest score ever on BA.
According to my count, I've reviewed 358 beers this year on BA. Not bad, pretty much one beer a day, and 10 days to go.
If I have done what I think I have done: (1) I looked at ABV listed for every beer review by all participants in NBS BIF #18 and divided the ABV range into five levels, into each of which 20% of all the ABVs fall (ignoring any beer that did not have an ABV listed) (2) Determined which of those ranges each of my beer reviews fell into (ignoring any that has no ABV) (3) Calculated the percentage of my reviews that fell into each of those five ranges
2024: 2 beers rated 1 beer reviewed and rated. Two , the ones rated, were beers i had plenty of times ,but never reviewed . For about 2 weeks i was considering drinking and rating all top 250 Russian Imperial Stouts then i just gave up . I believe i have had more than half on the list so I'll consider that an achievement.
Yes Ryan, I'd love to see my stats broken down - an off year with only 223 new beers YTD, rated between 2.55 - 4.49.
