DEVO Presents: Locomotion Protocol (Sub-Routine: Devil)

    Artist: DEVO
Album: Are We Not Men? We Are Running With The Devil!

    Performance Notes:
The stage is sparse. Mark Mothersbaugh is in a yellow jumpsuit, twitching and spasming behind a bank of synthesizers. Bob Mothersbaugh ("Bob 1") stands stiffly with a clean-toned, angular guitar. Gerald Casale is on a Moog bass, wearing an Energy Dome, his movements precise and robotic. Alan Myers sits at a drum kit, playing a rigid, metronomic beat. The vibe is less "rock god swagger" and more "anxious automaton malfunctioning."

(The song begins not with car horns, but with a series of descending, dissonant synthesizer tones, like a warning klaxon on a failing piece of industrial equipment. It's unsettling and sterile.)

(The main riff is NOT played on a distorted guitar. It's a staccato, punchy Moog synthesizer bass line, played by Gerald. Bomp-bomp-bomp... bomp-bomp... bomp... Each note is sharp and clipped.)

(A spiky, clean guitar line from Bob 1 interjects with nervous, high-pitched phrases, answering the synth bass. The drums kick in with a stiff, 4/4 drum-machine-like beat. No swing, all precision.)

(Mark Mothersbaugh steps to the mic, his voice a high-pitched, paranoid yelp.)

    (Verse 1)
    I'm online now!
    My status is "live"!
    SYSTEM ERROR: TEMPORAL AWARENESS OFFLINE.
    (Hiccuping yelp) NO TOMORROW!
My behavioral restraints... have been de-activated!
    (He's loose!)
    Yes, I'm loose now, spud-boy, that's... a fact!

(Chorus - The whole band chants in a robotic, monotone unison, punctuated by Mark's yelps.)

ALL: WE ARE RUN-NING WITH THE DEV-IL!
    MARK: (Ahhhhh, yeah!)
    ALL: INI-TI-ATE... DI-A-BOL-I-CAL LO-CO-MO-TION!
    MARK: (Functioning!)

    (Verse 2)
I found the simple life... contains... unforeseen complexities!
    DATA IN-COR-RECT!
When I'm ambulating down the designated pedestrian pathway...
    (He's walking!)
All the consumer units, they stop and they process!
    (Stare-stare-stare!)
They say, "QUERY: IS THAT THE GENETIC UNIT...
WHOSE DATA APPEARED IN THE NEWS-FEED?"

(Chorus - More frantic this time. The synth gets slightly more detuned.)

ALL: WE ARE RUN-NING WITH THE DEV-IL!
    MARK: (Ahhhhh-ha-ha, YEAH!)
    ALL: INI-TI-ATE... DI-A-BOL-I-CAL LO-CO-MO-TION!
    MARK: (It's a beautiful world!)

    (SYNTHESIZER SOLO)
(Instead of Eddie Van Halen's virtuosic guitar solo, Mark Mothersbaugh attacks his keyboard. It begins as a simple, catchy 8-bit melody, then rapidly degrades into a chaotic cascade of atonal bleeps, bloops, pitch-bends, and filter-sweeps. It sounds like a computer having a seizure. Bob 1 punctuates the chaos with sharp, stabbing, dissonant guitar chords.)

(Bridge - The music drops to just the rigid drum beat and the Moog bass. Gerald steps to the mic, his voice a flat, deadpan baritone.)

    GERALD:
    Emotional sub-routines: Corrupted.
    "Love" parameter: Null.
    I repeat: Null.
Affiliation with other biological units... not found.
    Domicile unit: Vacant.
    Returning... to the bottom.

(Mark's yelp returns, frantic and desperate over the top.)
    MARK:

    Got nobody waitin' at hoooome!
    NOBODY!

(The full band crashes back in for the final chorus, faster and more unhinged than before. The lighting rig flashes erratically.)

    (Chorus / Outro)

ALL: WE ARE RUN-NING WITH THE DEV-IL!
    MARK: (YES! AFFIRMATIVE!)
    ALL: INI-TI-ATE... DI-A-BOL-I-CAL LO-CO-MO-TION!
    MARK: (DUTY NOW!)
ALL: WE ARE RUN-NING WITH THE DEV-IL!
    MARK: (DE-VO!)
    ALL: INI-TI-ATE... DI-A-BOL-I-CAL LO-CO-MO-TION!

(The song doesn't fade out. It abruptly STOPS. The final Moog note hangs in the air for a second, then cuts to dead silence. The band freezes in place, staring blankly at the audience.)

A very good American style IPA. Grapefruit and firm malt base. Mildly bitter. I’ll buy more of this beer.

The mosquitoes were out in force last night, we may turn in early. Cheers y’all!

In between Doc Martin episodes, and enjoying a Golden Monkey by Victory. file foto to follow.

Anyone else getting a lot of spam cell calls? I thought I had it down, with my call forwarding to another number where they could not leave a message. All sorts of fake numbers from the Netherlands to a ton where they use the same prefix as mine.

Funny as my google voice number gets no spam. Maybe I need to use that with trusted folk.
