Thanks to a nudge from @HopBelT, I just added Lichtenhainer to the site! Entries for this historical, lightly smoky and sour, German wheat were all over the place, so I'm glad it finally has a home. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/249/ Moved as many as I could by beer name It's going to take a while to move other entries over Please submit a report for any beers that need an update The top rated for impacted styles will automagically adjust within the next 24 hour And thanks to @steveh for pointing out this decade old BeerAdvocate magazine article on Lichtenhainer by @patto1ro. Check it out to learn even more! https://www.beeradvocate.com/articles/11624/lichtenhainer/ As always, I'm open to your feedback. Kippis!
YESSSSSSS! A few years ago during the middle of summer’s heat, I spent a couple weeks in Austin drinking the Lichtenhainer from Live Oak. Glad it’s been added!
Just did some checking, and Fair State in MN has a Lichtenhainer, cleverly called Lichtenhainer. We get Fair State distribution here, and I see they last had it last spring. Slight chance it's still on shelves here. I just let Fair State know the style has been added to BA, and there may be an uptick in interest.
Same. And from the linked article, @patto1ro agrees: "I’m always happy to see a beer style rise from the dead. Especially ones like Lichtenhainer with distinctive features. Let’s hope it sticks around."
Can’t we call it a North German Smoked Village sour or something? Lichtenhainer sounds like an act you’d witness if you stumbled into the wrong club in Berlin.
With this action, BA has revealed its cruel nature. After Happoshu was removed as a style, I made an irrational effort to find my final style, a traditional lambic. I didn’t realize that it would be truly difficult to find an unfruited lambic in the US, but I found one and was planning to celebrate with it TONIGHT! My evening is ruined, as it looks like I will spend it tracking down a rare style (that sounds dreadful—a smoky sour?) that nearly no US brewery makes. Thanks a lot, BA!
This is one style that I would agree with adding, even though I don't like them. So much different than a standard kettle sour, and prevalent enough that it's not just a curiousity.
Only 5 beers have been active this year lol. I wonder if Todd’s campaign will cause brewers to make this obscure style, or if we BA’s will hunt it down and start adding more. Over/under for 2026 at 15?
Zoiglhaus here in PDX makes one it appears, and Untapped seems to indicate it's currently on tap. Hmmmmm....
Really appreciate all the recent efforts, @Todd I admittedly haven't heard of this style until now- the description makes me think Grodziskie but with an added sour element Probably not something I'd see here in MT, but will keep an eye out for it when in Portland (thanks to @John_M for the Zoiglhaus tip ) Cheers!
