Will say that they don't seem like they're so ridiculous anymore. No longer the thickness of the frontal armor of a M1-A1 Abrams Tank
Definitely wax. I remember a bottle so much more if I get to cut the wax, and in a way, the color remains on my mind in the aroma and flavor.
Works for me, as long as the "wax" is as pliable as it is on Maker's Mark bottles. I don't think I've opened a waxed beer bottle since I got my Kershaw Leek folder. We'll see how it does on a bottle of Darkness. (The opening line has Darkness a slight favorite. )
Waxing beer bottles is purely virtue signaling, the brewer trying to elevate the beer as special. What's particularly frustrating is when I buy an expensive waxed beer, spend minutes struggling to open it safely, and it sucks. Does wax influence your score?
Is it even wax these days or is it a plastic coating they dip it in? 16 years ago a knife could cut through the wax, now you have to saw through whatever passes for wax. If they dip the bottle in wax I’m paying them with exact change that has also been dipped in wax.
Yup, wax is a misnomer. I haven't run across pure wax in years. Now it's pretty much plasticized concrete, actually a wax/plastic polymer.
They're a pain in the ass to open and it doesn't protect anything. I guess it looks fancy, but that's it.
