So I have done many 5 gallon all grain batches but I am scaling down on the next few batches to a 1 gallon system just so I can tinker with recipes.

My question is, when I mash in my grain, can I just mash it in my 5 gallon cooler (the same cooler I use during my 5 gallon batches)?

    Thanks in advance

Don't see why not. You worried about the extra dead space having an effect?

No, it was my homebrew shop guy thought that I wouldn't get all the sugar out. That it would just sit at the bottom (as apose to a 5 gallon batch). I wasn't sure why he thought that.

Couldn't say with confidence if it would be a problem or not, however I can't see a reason why that happen so long as you rinse your grain. Sometimes the best way to figure these things out is to experiment.
