T'was Westy XII when I joined with my "REAL name" as my username... but was Heady when I switched over and opened this account.

So just for comparison's sake, because I think it is interesting, the number of what I will call "regular" or "normal" beers (meaning widely distributed, year round/nearly year round, and/or beers most people could just walk into a store and get) in the top 100 has dramatically decreased in the last few years. For example, I joined BA in 2010. I picked a random 2010 date from the web archives, and the highest rated of these "normal" beers in 2010 was #6 with Rochefort 10. In addition, I count 22 beers out of the top 50 that I could just walk into a beer store any day and pick up. Expand that to the top 100 and its 49 beers.

In comparison, on the top 250 list today, the highest rated "normal" beer is #41 with FBS, and #45 is Rochefort 10. As could be expected these are the only such beers in the top 50. And only 3 such beers in the top 100 (FBS, Rochefort and St. Bernardus Abt 12).

I'm not sure if this is a good thing for the BA community or not.

I remember when Selinsgrove IPA was rated one of the best IPAs. A non-bottled draught only brew hailing from nowhereville PA. I've been meaning to get there for years, but alas, haven't made it...

Think it was Pliny when I signed up, making the first time I had it somewhat of a let down, I must say.

I'd love to get some Billboard-esque Top 250 data, such as how long Heady has been holding down the top spot. How many weeks has it been for Heady?

I joined in 2007 and it was Westvleteren 12. I believe it had been that for a while when I joined. It stayed that way for a couple more years and was eventually replaced with Pliny the Younger (at least that's how I remember it). I took a hiatus for about 3 years and just recently became more active again. Frankly, I haven't even looked at the list since I came back. I wouldn't know what the top beer was if you all didn't mention it.

It's kind of a silly list if you think about it. I'll bet a side by side tasting of the top 25 accompanied by another 25 of well scored but not top of the list beers, by 100 random BAs, would produce a different list. It's kind of a fun list to look at and talk about. That's all it is, though.

Guess I should clarify since Stormking was #1 when I started lurking around 02. It's burned into my memory because I'm a huge stout fan and living in upstate NY at the time, it was one of the first beers I tracked down due to the list. The list is a great tool to help you find beers and trust me you can ignore the ranking, if a beer has made the list it's worth drinking(at least once). So scroll down to 200 and look for what's available at your local shop. Or use the Beers of Fame list. The regional list is one of the best new features.
