well there's a dark lord at 9 and a dark lord at 55, so it's not totally out of the running. Barrel aged versions, but still there.

    I hear ya.

I have no doubt that the explosion in quality small batch beers is good for the beer DRINKER, more options of great beer is a good thing for the consumer. But I think a fair argument could be made that its been bad for the Beer Advocate Community. Have you been on the ISO:FT forums lately? Its a cluster fuck of absurdity over there these days.

I'd like to hop as a community us beer lovers can get over this "whale hunting" as every "whale" I've tasted does not seem worth the effort of tracking it down. I've had Heady plenty of times and enjoyed but not as much as local Carton 077XX which I can walk into a store and buy any day of the week. I know it's fun trying lots of beers, but I deal with so many people new to craft beer that make it their goal to find and try all of these extremely hard to come by brews when they haven't even explored everything that's readily available to them on the shelves yet. When I started working a t liquor store 3 years ago, I made a point of trying everything we carried. I was blown away by some beers that we could order anytime and put on the shelf. By doing this, as I came to the point where people would bring me these highly sought after brews, I found these "whales" to be such a let down for the hype since while Pliny was good, so was Resin, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I didn't feel like reading all of the responses on here, but we need to remember that BA has occasionally adjusted the way the list is constructed. For a long time the Bayesian parameters were a minimum of 100 ratings with an average of 3.77. Now the minimum ratings is dynamic.

Furthermore, just because a beer is ranked higher than another doesn't necessarily mean it's better. It might just mean that it's average rating is more reliable because it has so many more ratings.

For instance (and I'll use an extreme example):
Good Morning from Tree House is ranked #74 at the moment. It has an average rating of 4.73, but it only has 157 votes.
Founders Breakfast Stout is ranked #41 but it has an average rating of "only" 4.52.

Is Good Morning better than FBS? I have no idea. But if 13,000 more people rated it we might think of it differently.

Those looking for a "more reliable" and/or less dynamic list should go to the Beers of Fame. Aside from BA (once again) screwing with the Bayesian parameters, that list should more or less stay the same for quite a while. There will always be some minor shuffling and the occasional replacement of beers around the 250/251 interface, but that's about it unless a big-time player reaches the 10 years on BA mark.

For a while Three Floyds was distributed into the SEPA area. But about 2005-6 they had to pull out of PA owing to increasing demand in their "home" market.
