I am a huge fan of BN. I've had a case for 1 yr. stored at 50 degrees. Lately as I get very close the 1 yr bottling date it has been tasting more and more like soy sauce. Anyone with similar experiences? Honestly tjoight it would hold up a little better under what I consider good conditions.

To clarify...I've been drinking the BN one bottle about every 2 weeks.

That's strange. I would imagine it would only get better for three or four years – not soy sauce after just one.

It was much sweeter when fresh. Now it's just more sour. Do you imagine it getting better from expectation or experience?

I hate hearing this! I LOVE BN and have a few bottles from 2014 release that I was hoping would hold up a little longer. I guess I know what I'm drinking this weekend if they aren't already off...

I had a couple '12s that were drinking excellent. No soy taste whatsoever.

That's strange, and disappointing to hear. I haven't had one of the '14s in a while but the last time I cracked into a '12 (early '13 release) around christmas it drank absolutely fantastic.

I had one of my bottles of '14 about a month ago and I felt it was off. I wouldn't describe it as soy sauce but the barrel influence had drastically faded away. If I didn't know what it was, I would have guessed that it was a watered down Expedition. The good news was I got a lot of that red fruit notes that I get when I drink an Expedition stout so it wasn't all bad. But I told myself that I won't touch any more of these bottles for at least 6 months to see what happens to them.

I had a '14 maybe 2 weeks ago. I didn't notice anything off about it. But I happened to stumble upon it at the exact 1 year bottling date. So I have no idea how well it was stored. Could have been in a fridge the whole time for all I know.

I broke out a '14 at a bottle share on Feb. 1st and it was excellent. Now, the '14 BA Siberian Night we drank at the same bottle share...something was very off about the aroma. I could only describe it as a baby diaper smell.

I just drank one based on this posting. Was still awesome. Nothing off to report.

I like my black note fresh. Had a 2014 about a month ago and a 2014 2 weeks later and enjoyed the 14 a lot more. Much like kbs, the longer it ages, the less of the flavors I enjoy are there.

I had to drink one more and same result. Still won't deter me from seeking out again. I understand not every batch is the exact same going on in every bottle. Thanks for all your input guys!

I'm in the "don't age black note" camp. That double cream stout portion of the beer just doesn't last over time. Loses the creamy mouth feel over a year, and that's something I love about black note.

I read this thread and decided to pop open one of my '14 Black Notes last night. Gotta say, I enjoy this one more fresh as well. I also opened one of my '14 KBS and that guy is aging beautifully IMO.

I haven't had a 2014 since it was fresh but i will say that a 2012 with 2 years was beyond excellent. Maybe bn just dips slightly for a year then gets better, i thought the 2 year old one was far and beyond better than fresh.
