Whew - I thought I was the only one. We opened up 2013 and 2014 in January and the 2014 was not good. It is making me rethink about getting any this year.

Had a '14 the other night and I enjoyed it even more that a year ago. Stored in a dark fridge in a dark room at 45 degrees.

Saw this thread.... opened my black note and had a similar experience (soy sauce off taste and no barrel). Pretty disappointing.

In honor of this post, I opened a '12 and a '14 tonight. Being a so-so fan of sushi, I detected no soy in mine whatsoever. They were slightly different, but nothing offending in either. I might have detected the expedition flavor a bit more in the '14. Both were good to me. If anyone not liking their BN is in Detroit metro, I'll gladly trade good stuff for it unless you think it was cellared in adverse temp conditions.

Wish I'd gotten a case of Black Note to hold a similar experiment

Yeah, same here. My "experiment" was done with 2 of my 6 bottles that I've been able to collect only by trade over the last year. And I actually didn't intend to open the '12....just accidentally grabbed the wrong bottle and realized too late.

One of the few BA beers I find does not get better with age. Just had a 12' a few weeks ago and found a similar "soy sauce" experience. Not as sweet, more bitter, and less of the vanilla/coconut barrel flavors. I think the 14' are still good but I'll be polishing them off as soon as possible.

It was an absolute stunning surprise to get a case here in Pittsburgh. I walked into a local beer Distro and fill out on a little 2x3 paper my name and beer of request. While filling it out I'm literally thinking to myself "yea this is about a 1% chance of happening". So 5 or 6 weeks goes by and I honestly forgot about the request. Just then I get a call from the beer Distro saying "your case of Bells Black Note just arrived". I was in shock. Once I regained consciousness, I quickly loaded the kids into the car and drove straight to the beer store.

Here's the kicker. Later that night, after spending $125 on beer that day, I go to my local 6 pack shop. Always a decent selection but never any whales. I walk in, do my normal look around. What do I see? Singles of BN for $6.35. I immediately grab 6. Then tell my beer friends about it of whom never heard of it. Next evening I go back and bought 4 more. Surreal experience. Half I traded away to fellow BA'ers.

No odd flavors here either. I accidentally left a black note from last year in my kitchen on a shelf exposed to light kind of close to the oven and long behold it tasted amazing last night. the only thing I noticed was there was very little carbonation.
