I’ll share my Andre the Giant story.

I was an employee at a Holiday Inn as a dishwasher when I was a 15 yr old back in 1980. The Holiday Inn was a hotel located north of Pittsburgh, PA. and it had a banquet hall, fine dining, and a bar lounge with live entertainment. When the wrestling circuit would come to town they would stay at this hotel. One night a bartender came back to the kitchen and said “it would be a good time to go to the bar and grab the dirty bar glasses, Andre the Giant is sitting at the bar.” I remember there was music playing, it was a dark lit lounge, there was a number of professional wrestlers hanging at the bar, and Andre the Giant sitting at the end of the bar by himself. He had a draft beer and an empty shot glass in front of him. I walked behind the bar grabbed the bar glasses and took a quick glance. He was a huge intimidating human. So were the other wrestlers. I remember them being very loud when they were socializing as I was trying to maneuver my way back to the kitchen. They were smoking weed in the hallway outside the bar. The bartender said they were all very respectful and tipped very well but nobody really talked to Andre. They all just let him alone as he sat the end of the bar drinking his beer.

His stated record is 64 MGDs in a direct flight.

He started drinking the 107 at the ballpark after a day game (perhaps it was before or during and he just didn't want it out there in public). He continued drinking through the airport, on the plane which had a stop over, and then on the continuing flight to the West Coast. He then went out drinking with the team after, also counted in his 107 claimed total.

So over four hours I agree, it's highly unlikely, but over the above mentioned timeline of a "flight" over a 14-16 + hour stretch (just over a six pack an hour), it's extreme and likely still under 107 but perhaps humanly possible.

He was able to drink a case of beer on an hour flight without even having to break the seal. Said he didn't even start getting drunk until after 1 1/2 cases.

Wade Boggs vs Andre in a pay per view beer drinking event back in the 1980’s sure would have been fun to watch.

I read that, too, after the fact. I'm still not buying it. The sheer volume of fluid alone (>10 gallons) boggles the mind. Unless he has a bladder the size of an elephant's, he'd have been spending most of his non-drinking time in the lavatory.

Or maybe he was in the lavatory the whole time. Who knows, except for those continuing to propagate this hoax?

There's enough people around a traveling baseball team that it would be pretty hard to keep up that conspiracy. Not like it was a one-off thing, it was habitual and routine.

The one I don't believe is Dock Ellis throwing a no-hitter on LSD.

It does have all the makings of an urban legend. I'm sure the 500,000 people that were at the ballpark the day Babe Ruth called his shot would agree.

Now that guy was one crazy SOB. I was listening to a Reds-Pirates game on the radio one time when Ellis was pitching. He hit the first three batters he faced and got yanked after walking Tony Perez and going 2-0 on Johnny Bench. It came out later that he had stated his intention to hit every batter in the Reds lineup that night. He was a damn good pitcher, though, high or not.

If someone told you a story that they knew a guy who once claimed that a quarter of a century ago drank 107 beers over the course of a drunken trip that involved at least half a dozen different drinking locations... would you trust this story to have a very accurate count?

I read on the internet that Wade borrowed an umpire's clicker to keep track.

    Cheers!
