ive followed the conversation on here for awhile now, and i think its finally time i break my silence on something. last night i drank Mikkeller's 1000 IBU. it was a profound experience for me. ive sought out a lot of highly regarded ipa's, and loved them all, but this was in a league of its own. i know they say the human palate cant distinguish IBUs after about 150 (at the most), sort of like scoville heat units, after awhile its just friggen hot, but there was something unique and special about this beer. it has something that no other ipa ive ever had has, its magic really. i know its expensive and not easy to source, but holy cow people, uve gotta try this stuff. i was shocked to see it rated an 87, i think its near perfect. anyone else had this recently and have an opinion?
I had Founders Devil Dancer awhile ago. It was way too much, numbed my tounge...IDK how a beer with 1000 IBU's could even be drinkable.
Had it on tap a couple months ago, I really enjoyed it. While hoppy it wasn't melt your face aggressive. I guess the saying that past a certain IBU you can't even taste it is true.
I can guarantee there is not 1000 measured IBUs in that beer. You have a tough time getting over 100 even in the best laboratory environments.
Agree with this 100%. Had a bottle about a month ago and it actually wasn't as in your face as I would have expected. I would strongly recommend it as well.
Comment was more in response to the posters that followed the OP. Personally, can't stand beers like this that rely on a naming gimmick to sell bottles. If you're gonna name a beer something like that, I want to see a lab analysis posted on your web site to confirm the specs you're quoting. IBU's are a quantifiable measurement not unlike ABV. I routinely rely on ABV labels to give me an indication of what to expect. For me, I've never picked up this particular bottle because the premise of it is ridiculous. I've personally seen people pick up this bottle as some sort of dare or test of man-hood --- don't really think that is how you should be selling beers.
Yeah I get what you mean. Honestly though, there have been way more obnoxious beers from breweries that have actually proven their stats to be legit: http://www.brewdog.com/blog-article/341
The highest IBUs ever measured in a lab were just over 110. It is physically impossible to dissolve more IBUs than this into a beer, and most beers with theoretical IBUs in the hundreds or thousand generally measure lower than this, like 80s or 90s. Beers that claim IBUs higher than this are essentially lieing to you. One should keep in mind though that hop flavor is a different issue than IBUs, and while adding more hops does not necessarily increase IBUs, it can increase hop flavor.
Haha, yeah, those Brewdog guys are definitely a bit Barnum-esque in their marketing conventions. They make Mikkeller look downright tame.
I had this a couple years back. I wasn't too impressed. My friend that bought it loved it though. I love Mikkeller beers and it wasn't BAD, it just wasn't special. My problem with uber-hopped beers is they try to balance them with a shitload of malts and its like I just wanted hops, not caramel.
[quote="DonDirkA, post: 538087, member: 642067"I just wanted hops, not caramel.[/quote] That's exactly how I felt when I tried Maharaja. On topic, I wanted to try 1000 IBU's but i'm not sure how fresh the bottles were. (But than again with that many ibu's, need I worry about the hops fading? Or would 1000 IBU's be fastly superior to 900 IBU's? Damn first world problems. (Seriously tho, to the OP, fantastic you found a beer that you love. )
