Driving to Chicago this week from cleveland. Was thinking of changing up my beer stop and try 18th street brewery. How's the beer there, the neighborhood, or anything else I should know. Thanks

Neighborhood is revamped! Even though its Gary :slight_frown:...beer is a hidden gem and I fully expect these guys to blow up shortly. IMHO they are slighly overshadowed being in the territory ot Chi-Town and 3F's....place them anywhere else in the state, say Indy even, and they would be more widely known than they currently are. I trust you will be happy you stopped in!

How many of their beers do they have on draft. Would like to try a few and get a growler

They only have 6 taps, but their beer is very good. Definitely worth a stop, but I'll be honest, the neighborhood is very shady looking and I don't think there are any great food options nearbye. I believe they do growlers, so a quick stop for a couple beers and growlers would be worth the pit stop since you are heading to the city.

Depending on the day, 18th St. may have 3 or 4 of their own on, supplanted by a couple of non-18th stuff like Angry Hippo, Pipeworks, 3 Floyds, or a collaboration that they might have done with another brewer.

Excellent beer, and don't let the "shady looking neighborhood" talk stop you from supporting this brewer. Just started serving food in-house, so need to worry about finding food off premises.

As for growlers, they only fill 32 oz howlers, and most times they restrict what the sell in howlers to one or two that the have on.

Oh - and they do some limited bottling. I believe they are (or will soon be) selling bombers of Jade, their APA which is pretty damn tasty.

Website indicates they have a bottle shop. I'd give them a call to see what they have, FB post says Jade is in the bottle shop.

I've had a deal with the devil, hunter, galaxy slayer, brotherhood (collab with PW) and Killewitte (collab with AtG). All great beers. Looking forward to seeing Drew's products on the shelves and flowing from taps in Indianapolis.

I was there on Friday; they had Jade ready to bottle, but it wasn't ready to go yet. Might be today, but?.....

And, alas, no "bottle shop"....To my knowledge, they've bottled only the Hunter, Nubian Overlord, and soon to be bottled Jade.

Have you been to the brewpub, or just blowing smoke up our collective skirt?

    My guess is the latter.

Pretty certain that's the correct conclusion.

18th St is great! Drew and staff are good people and its always a great time grabbing a beer and chatting with them for a bit. Just started serving food as well as a pretty interesting tap list right now...a few of their own, three floyds, pipeworks almond abduction was on tap yesterday!

Picked up some Jade bottles as well yesterday

One of my favorite spots in NWI for sure! Very excited for the future of this brewery!

BTW, its only shady if you do not know Gary well. There are a lot of places in this country that may not be the nicest looking or have money/people willing to make a change but that is why Drew put his brewery where he did....to slowly help and change the area and rebuild. Also, if you think that part of Gary is shady/scary then you should never go into the real parts of Gary. Miller is the nicest part of Gary and I have never felt threatened or uncomfortable there.

    Hope this helps...

I bet the area by the brewery is fine. You just don't hear many positives when it comes to Gary. I don't know the area at all but just plan on hopping off the highway and then getting right back on. Hope there are some jade bottles left on Friday evening

i haven't been to the brewery. 18th used to bottle and sell a few things in Chicago. Definitely galaxy slayer, deal with the devil, sinister, hunter, the brotherhood collab. Website says Killewitte is coming to bottles soon. Website also says, "JADE, an American Pale Ale, coming soon, very soon to our bottle shop." pretty certain you're a douche.

EDIT: 18th Street also posted a new full menu on their website.

This, except for the douche part (I don't know if thats true). They did use to sell bottles of stuff and my local shop in Rockford used to get it before they moved to IN. I have had Deal With the Devil, Sinister, 7, Chloe, and Hunter and all were freaking awesome. I was sad when we stopped seeing their brews. Will definitely be stopping in at the brewpub sometime soon.

was i too harsh? hadn't had my morning coffee yet...

Now that they are producing in Gary, i would guess 18th isn't under the IL distribution laws and it's possible they can no longer self-distribute in IL? That or maybe rockford is just too far way now? I was excited to see the Killewiitte on tap at one of my locals. Really a fantastic brew if you like smoked beers.

The way I understand it, and please feel free anyone to correct me if I'm wrong, is Drew was contract brewing at either Spitefull or Pipeworks before he opened in IN. And the shop in Rockford that had 18th Street was only getting it because they were picking it up along with Spitefull and Pipeworks. I miss all the great 18th Street stuff we used to get here in Rockford too. I also saw a FB post that suggested Jade was bottled at available for sale at the brewery along with a full menu that stared yesterday.

Drew worked at pipeworks for a while making contract brews and brewing with pipeworks. 18th can't distribute to Il now because of self distro laws that prevent out of state self distribution. Excellent stuff from my experience. Dance with the devil was excellent.

Apologies if I was a bit snarky; not my intent. Mayhaps I was ragging a bit last night.

In any event, what I should have said was that since 18th opened up in Gary, they have very limited production capacity, and with that, don't bottle very much. As I said, they bottled Hunter and Nubian Overlord, but they were pub-only sales and with limited purchase quantities (1 pp). And, now, Jade is available, evidently.

Bottle shop is the phrase that made me chuckle - if you'd been to the new place, you'd know there is no such thing, at least just yet. They may be calling it that on their webpage, but in reality, no such thing.

Pretty much whats been said here. Neighborhood is pretty iffy. No parking so most people park on the gravel behind the train tracks. Deal with the devil is just ridiculously good. It's worth going out there just to try that beer. There's also a big sign pointing to the location of the brewery. Also when I went there I tried striking a conversation with Drew but he wasn't super chatty.

There will be a bottle shop there eventually, not only selling his brews, but also those from other breweries. The project is still in the works currently with no firm opening date, as Drew has enough on his plate right now with keeping up with the demand for his beers. But he already has the bottle shop license, I would assume in the next month or so.

Let me be the first to say that YoungLad may have been partially correct last Friday, but is entirely incorrect today. So, he's a partial asshat, but not entirely.

Just saw an 18th Street tweet - their "bottle shop" is in fact offering Jade, as well as some Against The Grain and Mikkeller lambics....So - 18th St is evolving at a pretty rapid pace.

I do agree, though, Deal with the Devil is really damn good.
