Planning a week in Maui this Christmas.... live in Charlotte, NC. Looking for advice - best spots for food - best spots for beer - do not miss type stuff. I'm hoping to find some West Coast brews I don't see on my coast.
Hit up Maui Brewing's taproom in Lahaina. Then go to Sansei sushi in Kapalua or Kihei (depending on where you're staying) and get the Chef's Tasting menu for two. The Miso butterfish there is the bomb. Or you can always just go straight to Costco after you land at the airport and just stock up on poke, then bring a couple bottles back to the hotel and munch on your stockpile of poke. For bottles go to Rodeo General Store. For a decent draft selection go to Monkey Pod Kitchen.
Hey Mantooth, my parents now live on Maui so I am able to hit up lots of stores and whatnot when I am over there. Here are a list of good places to check out. Keep in mind Maui is a fairly small island and you can drive from one side to the other in an hour or less, so hitting a bunch of these in a day is pretty easy. Near the airport: Hawaii Liquor Superstore in Kahului - some decent stuff but won't sell singles Whole Foods in Kahului - probably the best selection of beer you will find on the island and they will sell singles even if they aren't broken up Other side of the island: The Wine Corner in Paia - good for single bottles Rodeo General Store in Makawao - good selection of better imports Maui Brewing in Lahaina - lots of brewery only beers and guest beers and flights are available Foodland Farms in Lahaina - think Whole Foods type store with better beers Foodland in Lahaina - typical grocery store with a decent beer selection Have fun and enjoy!
Second WF in Kahuliu, without a doubt the best selection on the island.Maui Brewing is a blast, The wine corner is good, stop in Mama's fish house for dinner when your up that way, a must, insane fresh fish and other goodies. We have a place at Kapalua and find good things at the Kapalua General Store, great wine as well. Are you a golfer ? Cheers......
You find much from the San Diego area. Mostly from Rogue and northern California and Oregon. Hit up Whole near the airport and pick up what you can. Then head over to Maui brewing and get a growler or two. I heard that a lot of the restaurants in the Kihei area are starting to get more selections. Especially from Maui Brewing and Kona.
Thanks for the help. We'll be in the area a week - likely hop around to some other islands as well... so if there's anything else around we should see, lmk about that too. I can always rely on beer-geeks to turn me on to the good stuff.
I found it funny that Rogue's Hazelnut Brown in Hawaii is renamed Morimoto Hazelnut (or something like that) with a different label.
Can anyone make some suggestions for Oahu? I'll be there starting next week. Bottle shops or bars with good craft selection?
I know it's been stated already, but go to Mama's fish house. Not really beer-specific, but absolutely spectacular food and service there.
Since Mama's has been represented by a few already, I'll throw Hali`imaile General Store out there; not necessarily the most easily accessible, but good food. If you head up to Makawao to hit the Rodeo General Store, make a pit stop in Komoda Bakery, well-known for their cream puffs. Would also recommend Maui Brewing in Lahaina. As far as Oahu is concerned, I found a decent selection at The Liquor Collection at Ward Warehouse. Let me know if you have any questions about either place, I'm from Maui but went to college on Oahu, so I know a bit about both.
Again - thanks for all the help. We fly out Christmas day and plan on island hopping for about a week. If anything else comes to mind... it's been a while since I posted the question... lmk. You guys rock.
Assuming you'll be in Honolulu... Best selection of bottle shops: Tamura's on Waialae Ave - most belgians IMO, probably best selection Whole Foods, Kahala mall - also very good selection Fujioka Times Wines on Kaimuki Ave - sometimes have some beers the others don't - decent selection Bars: Real A Gastropub is great, 25 taps or so of craft and tons of bottles (we had Zwanze Day here this year!) Pint + Jigger is decent as well, with a great beer selection
We spent the whole week in Maui, the Marriott in Lahaina, and had a blast. Maui Brewing was very cool, I drank a lot of their canned coco porter - very good beer and they had a nice variety in their tap room - Double Overhead IPA is a monster at 9.8 and honestly one of the better draft IPA's I've had. We tried to check out Sensei sushi, but they were closed. The Rodeo General Store was neat - picked up some Deschutes Obsidian there, damn good. The Whole Foods had by far the best selection on the island and I was able to try three brews I'd not had a chance to snag before: Hibiscus IPA (colab by Maui and Coronada), Marin Brewing's Es Chi and Coronada's Idiot IPA (damn good IPA, btw). Mama's Fish House was packed and crazy pricey so we didn't wind up eating there - the view was amazing though. The Hali`imaile General Store was fantastic - very good food and reasonable prices. I'm missing flip flops and shorts, hovering around freezing here today. Thanks for all the help - Maui is incredible!
You missed out - it's totally worth it. One of my favorite restaurants in the world. Next time you're in Maui, make reservations and head over there! Other than that, sounds like you had a great trip. We're already planning our next one
