I have never done this before, so please bare with me.

I would like to give away two awesome brews from my all time favorite brewer: Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project.

I will send this beer to the person that demonstrates the most generosity/kindess of heart/willingness to help their fellow humans.

The window to do these good deeds is the next 24 hours (beginning now at 10:25 AM EST on 7/12 and ending 10:25 AM EST on 7/13). All participants must post their stories in this thread during that time period. Once the time period has ended I will decide a winner. Please don't beermail me your stories (those will not count), post them right in this thread.

Examples of what you could do would be:

"I saw a little old lady struggling to carry her groceries across the street, so I helped her carry them to her door." or "I spent some time cleaning up the park that's near my house." or "I donated $10 to a local domestic violence shelter." or "I made a sandwich for a homeless person."

    etc., etc., etc.

Get creative. Go as big or as small as you want! Making a big difference to you may be cutting a $1,000 check to a local charity, while for someone else it may be bringing a cold beverage to a person working their ass off in the heat.

Don't worry if the good deed is "big enough" just do it!
The only parameters is that it has to be done within the next 24 hours (the good charity work you did last weekend, while awesome, doesn't count) and it has to be a deed that benefits a human directly (taking in a stray cat doesn't count).

OBVIOUSLY this is going to work on the honor system. You have to actually have done what you said you did. If you lie and say you did a good deed but didn't actually do it then you are the King/Queen of All Douchebags.

I know this may seem like a ridiculous competition and a couple of bombers of Pretty Things may not seem like a big enough reward for such important work. Nevertheless, bettering the community is important to me and Pretty Things is important to me, so I figured what the hell!

Also, to the beeradvocate heros that are going to pick apart my motivations for doing this, save it. Don't start asking why I am only considering good deeds towards humans and not animals, don't start with the philosophical rhetoric about how if people are doing these good deeds just to get a reward they aren't really doing a good deed, etc., etc. This is the competition, take it or leave it.

I will pick the winner at this time tomorrow and then they can send me their mailing info.

    Salute!

Does this title come with ruling rights over all other douchebags or is this just an empty figurehead title like the Queen of England?

All seriousness though...Pretty Things makes some bad ass brews, cheers to whoever wins and to the OP for starting the LIF!

What a great idea! Little did the brewers know in brewing these batches of beer that good deeds will come out as a direct result of their brewing.

Well I guess I'll be the first.

So the wife and I have a mutual friend. She recently got divorced (husband left her for his secretary) and she lost her home to foreclosure. Well this week is her daughters 11 birthday and we know she has no money to do anything for her. So the wife and I are throwing her a birthday party Saturday and we gave her $200 today to buy her daughter birthday presents and clothes.

I did this because I grew up poor by a single Mom and I know how it feels to have birthdays and Christmas go by without receiving a gift. I couldn't let that happen.

Well Cheers guys and this is a great idea for an LIF!

Phew! I was starting to think this thread wasn't going to get any love. Awesome response man!

Keep them coming everyone. Remember, don't worry about what anyone else in this thread does, jacob4999 has set the bar high, but I am not measuring it by who gives the most money or most time.

Mother passed away a year from this sunday. She had a BIVAD surgery in which had many complications including a cut pulmonary artery and sepsis. She had an open thoracic cavity for over a month, and was in a coma for 3 in the SICU/MICU. During this time, I was in school but made a trip up every week to visit her and support my sister.
She had 2 nurses 24/7 for over the 3+ months. I got to know them very well and they kept my mom clean and "presentable" through it all. They kept my mom alive via life support, heart pumps, etc. My mother woke up one day but was vented through a trach. He lipped to me that the 2 specific nurses were "angels" and treated her amazingly the whole time. Apparently she heard everything during her coma.
I'm sending 2 dozen roses to these ladies in the MICU for all the passion they had for my mother during her dire straits. Though her struggles were tough, they both came to her funeral and I have the upmost respect for them.
edit - this is a collaborative effort between my sister and myself.

So I saw this thread this morning. It made me think about what I could do to help someone today. I had my eye out all day to find something I can do, but really the opportunities to help people come across all the time but they are usually small gestures. I don't expect this to compete at all with the above stories but that really isn't the point of this LIF now is it?

I helped a lady change a tire. A 40 something woman sitting on the side of I-290. Groundbreaking it is not... LIF winning it is not... but it made me feel good and if it wasn't for this thread I may not have stopped and helped.

    Thanks Providence!

I was in the admission line at the zoo. The family in front of us had a little boy, maybe 8 years old. He asked if they could get cotton candy. The mom told him they'd have to wait and see how much it cost to get in. I had tickets already for me and the 3 people with me. I gave these folks in front of me one of our child tickets, which made the mom tell the little guy that now they should have enough for cotton candy. I think the mom was maybe more excited about this than the kid was.

Of course this meant one of my kids had to go sit in the car for several hours while we were in the zoo, as I didn't have enough money for another ticket for him...

KIDDING!! I bought my kid another ticket.

    Great LIF.

Great LIF idea. And while I (sadly) can not add to the good deeds towards humanity today (thanks work for keeping me in a small edit bay for 12 hours), I can however bring forward a good cause my wife & I participate in that helps humanity's best friends.

We foster dogs from local shelters and rescue groups to find them better homes. Our first foster was this little girl we lovingly named Weazy (as in weasel):

Though very sad to see her go, she found a wonderful home with a great family (from Beverly Hills nonetheless).

And today, my wife informed me that we would be picking up our second foster sometime later this month from the Orange County Shelter (perhaps with a Bruery Provisions stop beforehand???). Hopefully, we find as good a home for him as we did for Weaz. If anyone is interested btw, look into abgra.org and/or brusselsgriffonrescue.org

    Also, Mr. Belvedere:

I made a new friend today at my job (d'aww). A group of us go out for drinks every Thursday and I invited him along. Turns out, he's a great guy and fit in well with the group. We discovered that we lived near each other, so I gave him a lift home and insisted we stop in at my favorite bottleshop on the corner. There, I bought him a bottle of Sculpin. His life will never be the same.

What a great LiF! It's great stories of people just being great human beings.
The story I want to share took place 4 years ago in Las Vegas. I am a police officer here and while I have seen my share of bad things and done my share of good deeds one story sticks out as the most tragic and at the same time most eye opening and rewarding. I was dispatched to a call in July reference a a boy calling into our dispatch saying that his dad hadn't moved and wasn't waking up. Our dispatch, like they always do instructed the boy to feel for a pulse, which the boy said he couldn't find but said he was really cold. The instructed him on CPR which he did. Upon arrival I found inside, a 10 year old boy, a 7 year old boy, and a 3 year old boy. On the couch, was a man who appeared to have been dead for at the very least 4-5 hours. The boys had been at a neighbors house playing all day and had come home to find their dad deceased on the couch. The ther was at work and had not been notified yet.
While upstairs, my sole job for that call was to make sure that the children stayed upstairs while the coroner conducted their investigation. I remember talking to the older kids who, for just having lost their dad were taking it considerably well I vividly remember talking to the 3 year old. He obviously couldn't comprehend the magnitude of what had happened, so he did the only thing that he thought would help. He looked at me, handed me a picture of his family, and said "can you give this picture to my daddy when he wakes up?" I took the picture from him gave him a huge hug, and said "of course I will bud." I walked into the upstairs hallway and really had to fight off tears. I folded the picture and placed it in an envelope and left it on the kitchen counter. I know this may not be a good deed story, where I donated money or whatever and quite frankly I could careless if I win or not. Just reading this thread got me thinking about that day again. I haven't ever had another call come close to being as stuck in my head as that one. Maybe it stuck in my head because I had just had my first baby boy 3 months prior and it hit home.

Sorry for such a long reply/story! I hope you all have a great night, I have to work in the morning.

Not a winner by any means, but I picked up a steaming pile of work for one of my co-workers yesterday at 5pm. I'm out of town friday so I had to do it last night. not that big a deal for me but it definitely took the heat off him. And my coworkers went out to dinner and I picked up one of the pizzas...

This is an awesome LIF for the BA community

Damn, this is going to be a difficult decision. I should have expected a tough choice!

I will check back at 10:25 and name a winner.

Ok, I have made my decision after a TON of thought!. I should have anticipated how difficult this would have been. I want to first say thanks to everyone who shared a positive story here. The good things you all have done are inspiring, I really mean that.

I want to apologize in advance to those individuals that I do not send the bombers to. If I had the money I would send everyone who replied some bombers. I sincerly mean that. And if you didn't get picked please don't feel like your good deed wasn't "good" enough. That's not the case at all. In fact, some of the folks that didn't get picked made an even bigger positive impact than the person that did get picked. Ultimately however, it came down to the question of, where the good deeds things that you were already planning to do? In those cases were I was really impressed with generosity I also knew that those doing the generous acts were already planning on doing them anyways.

The winner of the bombers is AJDePaul. Something about his story just stuck with me. Your act showed the beauty and simplicity of spontaneous good gestures. Please beer mail me your name and address and I will send along the package.

To everyone else, seriously, you guys/gals are awesome people!

Sweet LIF. Congrats to the winner. Is this one of those situations where "we're all winners?" Sort of like soccer for 4 year olds, where they don't keep score?
