Holy Crap, it's been a long 2 months! Started off with in late March with surgery to get a bright, shiny Titanium disk put in my lower back (L5-S1) to replace the one that had worn itself completely away, leaving nothing but bone on bone, and pain:slight_frown: . They warned me to stay away from alcohol 'cause of the pain and bone regreneration meds. Finally feeling halfway decent and near ready to go back to work after 6 weeks, then a moderate case of pnemonia (probably from all the hospital visits...). Finally hacked it out of my system, with anitibiotics and seemingly gallons of cough syrup and mist sprays. Then to cap it off, Sunday, Mothers Day, at my Parents for 10 minutes, then to the hospital with severe right side pain, a 2mm stone which still needs to make an exit. Now I need to celebrate feeling halfway good...

My beer related question is twofold - I NEED to celebrate, and have a bottle of King Henry from last year - how bad did it deteriorate since last March, and what changed? Did it go from an exceptional BW to a merely good one, or worse? It was first stored in a 65 degree "cellar", then to a fridge about 4 months ago. Can anybody else suggest something else special that's special and available in the midwest?

And 2nd - what's a good, premium summer beer available here in Wisconsin? Prefer IPA/DIPA's, Belgians, but will try anything. I've got a few 4 packs of Ommengang Fleur de Houblon's Summer ale in the fridge I really like, but what does anybody else really dig? Open to any ideas, but prefer something I can find without trading.
    THANKS,
    Greg

Seriously, why do people buy beer to just have it sit in their cellars?! Drink it! You buy beer to drink it, not to put it on the shelf and wait to drink it. It is the same beer regardless.

On another note. Breweries shouldn't release beers that need time to cellar or carbonate. Beers should be ready to drink right away. Shame on any brewery that intends on a beer needing age. Age it first, then release, you dumb, stupid, idiotic, lame, ******ed, awesome, sexy, moronic, cool brewery.

I didn't read all (or any) of that ^ but the only suggestion I have that coincides with 2 months without beer is...well... Death!

You might want to wean yourself back to the good stuff since your body is probably in withdrawal....ehhh screw it...go to New Glarus and chug as much Raspberry Tart as you can till your face is numb....and trust me the King Henry is still pretty good

New Glarus IIPA should still be around in places. Get a bunch of that. Had one last week... still very fetch.

In fact, New Glarus to all your questions.

When I was pregnant, that obviously was 9 whole months w/o anything. The best way to celebrate is with what you've recently been craving. Don't go with what you preferred before this whole abstinence thing... because the crave beer is the one that will really hit the spot.
Also, I found in that first week back to booze, super boozy things weren't very tasty to me... I became sensitized... so maybe avoid the total abv bombs like world wide stout or bcbs.

For DIPAs.... my 2 fav's right now (because sucks is out of season) is double jack and resin. Very delish on a nice spring day.

Sorry for your recent round of bad health, but glad you are on the mend and will be back in full force for the summer. I don't know WI breweries, so will suggest a few CO beers that have distro in WI.

Odell's Myrcenary (IIPA) and St.Lupulin (seasonal APA out now)

Oskar Blues Deviant Dales (IPA) and Gubna (IIPA)

New Glarus IIPA or Saison... both amazing and refreshing, GREAT summer beers.

Also, keep an eye out for Goose Islands - Sofie Paradisi, Sofie with grapefruit! It's only on kegs.

Look on Seekabrew to find out what is distributed in your area.

First of all, let me just say that sucks and I hope you make a full recovery.

Secondly, I can't imagine that a mere 2 months has done anything to affect KH's quality. For one thing, people go way too far overboard with how fast beer drops off. And if it becomes mellower, more complex, etc., awesome. Not bad. I can understand if, say, you have 2-year old Hopslam and you love the hops, but it makes a damn delicious barleywine-type beer anyway.
Thirdly, if your in Wisconsin, you've got it going on with New Glarus. With limited experience but having had several of their beers, they've never failed to impress me. You should have easy access to lots of great beer with NG alone. Drink up!

Good luck, healthwise, going forward. You've been through alot. The best advice I can give is after 2 months of no beer, ANYTHING will probably taste good [even a macro], just like food tastes better when you're hungry. In fact, free beer tastes even better, so hit up some friends for sympathy beers.
