Just paid 34$ and it seemed excessive. Normal or no?

I normally pay around $20 for an exchange, and around $50 to buy the first full tank. If you go to a place that fills while you wait, I think you'll get it for less than $20, but not much less.

For 20 lbs, $34 is actually pretty cheap. At least around here it would be.

This is about my experience too, I think the last guy filled it for 20 or 22. Oh well

Yesterday I bought 18 lbs for $17.33, which amounts to $0.96/lb. On the downside gasoline here is typically much more that the national average. On the upside, natural gas is quite cheap. Go figure.

BTW, most places that exchange only fill the tanks to 15 lbs (at least that is the impression I have from reading earlier posts on the subject).

Around here, a 20 lb fill costs $17-$20. A 15 lb swap, about the same (that's the equiv of about $22-$26 for 20 lbs). Natural gas equivalent (same # of BTUs as 20 lbs of propane) is about $2.

    Guess what I use?

Oops! Can't help you with that one.

Natural gas and propane are far easier to keep lit.

$34 is not out of the ballpark around here for 20 lbs of CO2. One of the LHBS will swap a 20 lb aluminum tank for $25 -- they're not interested in steel. I have one of each, so I swap every other one.

At our welding supply store a 20# tank exchange is $12 plus tax, a 50# cylinder exchange costs me $20. OTOH my 2# tanks cost $9, and a 5# tank costs $10

A 20lb fill at the welding shop is about $30 here, and $16 for a 5lb cylinder. My 5lb cylinders last forever because they only get used for parties, camp outs and such since I inherited the 20lb. The 20 pounder lasts a couple of years at home too.

I just swapped a 20# about a week ago, my guy charges me $35. I think I could probably get closer to $30 around here, but I've been going to this guy forever so I keep going.

Traditionally, the price is not dramatically higher for a bigger tank. Check it out - you may be able to pay for a bigger tank with the savings from only a few refills.
