When I got it filled recently, I made them double-check prices cause as I said, 'that sounds like the price for a 20# fill'...their response was that a 20# fill was "significantly more expensive". Obviously double the price for a 20# fill is still clearly worth it though...

yup...but this thread did make me search around again. I think I may have found a possible lead. Will see...

Strange... I get my fills from Airgas in Barre - $16/30 for 5/20lb fills. Maybe Airgas would like to know that a small local franchise is ripping people off.

What kind of place can you buy a full tank for $50? I've only found new ones for $90 unfilled and $120 filled for 5 pound tank. I feel like I'm not asking the right people. I've tried homebrew shop, local gas supplier, and a grow-your-own-dope shop

15$ for a 5# exchange in my area- Airgas
Last time I stopped in they didn't have any 5 lb tanks so they gave me a 20# tank for the 15$.

My reply was for an LP gas exchange before the OP mentioned that he was asking about CO2. I presume that your situation and question is in regards to CO2, but I can't answer that because I don't keg my beers.

Propane aside, check Craigslist for CO2 tanks. I once saw a half full 50 lb tank advertised for $20. Granted, it doesn't happen all the time, but you'd be surprised by what people are willing to practically give away in the interest of clearing out the garage.

Oh right. I guess I just gave co2 on the brain right now. Anyway i found a used 5 pound tank tank (co2) for $50 shipped so I guess I am happy.

i just went to my local Airgas supply and found the price of a 5# CO2 refill was substantially higher than even one month ago. the counter person mentioned that Airgas has increased over the counter prices across the board and asked how much CO2 i usually buy in one year.

so, my LLC buys a some CO2 in one year, maybe 100 pounds. nothing like a commercial account. anyway, they had me fill out a form, set me up with a commercial account and guaranteed very reasonable prices. problem solved.

moral of the story, if they ask how much you buy in a year lie to them and say 100 pounds minimum. then set up an account and buy at a discount. there is not some sort of penalty, and it's not a credit account, so why not?

    Cheers.

How much is 'substantially'? Did prices double, because that's the kind of discrepancy telejunkie is experiencing. For the record my last fill was in March so I could be pretty out of touch with what's going on right now.

yes, the 5# exchange was something like $22 one week and not more than two weeks later the price was over $40. the counter guy asked how much i usually paid and tried to set up the account with a standard price they could always reference. so i don't know what is going on over at Airgas. it seemed to me that the counter guy was frustrated as well.

we have a Welco gas supply in the same industrial park as Airgas. i wonder if they are also jacking up the price?

Ouch... Yep prices have more than doubled since spring; I'm being quoted 35 bucks for a 5#:
