i recently acquired an 05 dark lord to give me an 05-12 vertical. I am curious of a few things:
    • Has anyone had the 05 recently (if so, how "recently"), and how is it holding up?
    • How is the 04 holding up? Does anyone who has had it "recently" think it's worth acquiring to round out the vertical? Or is it way over the hill at this point, and I'd just be trading a mountain of beer for wet cardboard stout?
    • What is your best guess as to what it would take to acquire an 04?
Thanks in advance for any insight. I have a friend coming to town Sept. 22 before he is getting married and he wants to "make it rain" dark lord so I am debating what to do with respect to 04 depending on how age has treated it.

There have been reports of both of these heading downhill for probably a year or more. It really depends on how much of a completionist you are.

Honestly, not that much. It'd be nice of course, but not going to go out of my way for cardboard stout

My tasting group opened the 05 and 04 about a year and a half ago. The 04 was sludgy, cloudy and drank almost like triple bock but thicker and with more sweetness. Really a mess and completely not worth it (though I was glad to have had the opportunity). The 05 was a bit better, but honestly, it was also falling off fast. With what it would take to get the 04, I would say its really not worth it at all.

I had '05 and '06 about 6 months ago. The '05 was one of the greatest things I've ever tasted. Truly excellent, and I will no longer drink DL fresh haha. '06 was great also, step below the '05. You're going to love it.

Had the 04 not to long ago. It was so thick and oil like you could almost cut your pour off with a scissors. The 05 was pretty good but going down.

The '04 I had recently was very sludgy. Lots of sediment. I mean lots. To me it was waaay past its prime. I prefer it 3 years old. The '05 for some reason seemed hot with boozy alcohol heavy on the licoricoe type flavor. Definitely not what I expected. Very sludgy with lots of sediment but less than '04.
