My friend and I just acquired this bottle. This is the first rare, cellared, barrel aged beer I have ever picked up. It supposedly has been properly cellared for the entire time. What can I expect from this thing? The pessimistic side of me thinks this thing is either dead or on the verge of death. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

There's only one way to find out.

Open it up and report back to us!

(I bet you thought it was going to be another one of these overused "send it to me and I'll properly dispose of this super oxidized POS beer" remarks)

I agree with your pessimistic side. I predict it will be a shell of it's original self. The barrel character would be gone along with all the other aspects that are appreciated. I wouldn't be surprised if it was oxidized beyond recognition, either. Don't get your hopes up too high. I find that, contrary to popular belief, there are VERY FEW BA Stouts that take cellaring well.

June 22nd is the date. I celebrate my birthday that day. Thankfully I have '13 KBS, Parabola, and BA BORIS to fall back on if this Speedway Stout sucks. I hope it doesn't, though. I'll report back when I know.

I've heard vintage BA Speedways are still quite good, so I wouldn't assume this is going to be DOA.

I also have a 2004 BA SS and am waiting one more year to open it and seeing how a BA stout holds up for ten years, compared to a fresh one. But would still be curious how it taste if you do open it.

I will. From what I've gathered it's been treated well and cellared in optimal conditions. From the bits of research I've done it's right in the range of maximum recommended cellaring (8-10 years.) keep your eyes open on the "what are you drinking now?" thread 6/22. I'll have a full report on it, plus pics!
That brings me to another question. With KBS, Parabola, BA BORIS, '12 Speedway Stout, '13 Speedway Stout, and a few others, where should I fit this BA Speedway into this tasting? My guess is last. Hopefully if it is an "oxidized POS" I'll be too drunk by that point to care much.

I'd be willing to bet that, if your cellar report is what the original owner said it is, the beer will be fantastic. Speedway is 12% ABV, which should age gracefully for some time. I know a couple guys who opened an '03 BA Speedway about two years ago and said it was phenomenal.

Let us know how it is when you open it.

Happy almost birthday (mine is June 19)!

And you should definitely drink it first. It is the rarest thing you've got, so you want to taste it on a fresh palate. If it happens to be oxidized, you'll have plenty of other beer left to drink.

I had a 2009 recently courtesy of bstyle... I thought it was awesome but would really love to try it fresh. It seemed a bit muddy to me.

I would try it first like they said on here so your pallet is fresh then open the fresh one. Or even do a side by side tasting with them which is what I think I'm going to do.

I think it's going to be very sweet and most of the nice flavors that it has fresh will be gone. But hey I could be wrong.

In my experiences with aging BA stouts, the bourbon burn is kinda toned down and you get a lot more of a creamy kinda chocolate vanilla taste from the beer. There much smoother. I can go either way with the BA stouts sometimes I like that more bourbon taste coming through and sometimes I like that mellow smooth taste. I hope really this comes out tasting like a malted milk ball in expectations. Which would be a good thing to me.

There are multiple ideas as to how this thing will turn out. It certainly adds to the mystique of it. It could be awesome or it could be a dreadful drain pour. All questions will be answered June 22nd. Thanks for the insight!
