I came across 2 of these bad boys, Drank the first one and enjoyed it. (not a reviewer). Was wondering if there is any trade value in this or should I just throw it in a BIF box? Thanks
It's still on shelves in plenty of places (as you just found out). I personally love the beer and have bought a decent amount of it over the years, but it's never been a big fan favorite, which is why 5 year old bottles are still lingering. I am starting to see them really dry up though... Basically, no real trade value other than interesting locals.
This beer is still on the shelves? One of the few beers i have actually seeked out from DFH. Traded an exponential hoppiness for two bottles last year. Felt like i was getting the better end of the trade so i included a second expo as an extra. I knew it didn't have huge trade value, but didn't realize it was still on the shelf.
Yeah, like I said, the well seems to be drying up in the last year though. There's a store I've been regularly purchasing it at for the last 5 years, and now it's finally all gone. As BigGene just showed, it's clearly sitting around elsewhere too.
I guess with everyone caught up in chasing the dragon for the next great new beer a few gems slipped through the cracks.
Yeah, still see these on the shelf occasionally. IMO (possibly due to my cellaring, who knows), it's going downhill - had one a couple years ago and it was really good, had one a couple months ago and it was starting to just taste like oxidation and blah. Still ok but I doubt it has much of a life left.
I haven't had one in a good 6+ months, so I should crack one soon to check it out. There was some serious batch variation - the 2005 was aging phenomenally but the 2007 not quite as well. It's tough to say what to expect - 5+ years on a Belgian strong dark is pushing it for most beers, but this is an 18% monster so you'd think it would hold up a bit better...
Yeah, mine were all of the '07 batch. I've had very old 120s and WWS that have aged wonderfully, but the Raison D'Extra I had in December seemed to have a LOT of sediment in the bottom and was not very clear (the sediment did not pack/hold together well), in addition to the oxidization. I don't recall if this was true of the one I had a couple years ago? Perhaps I just had a less ideal bottle.
I didn't find them on a shelf, the local DFH rep gave them to me. As I said I drank one and it was glorious. I know DFH stuff isn't traded much but I was wondering about the aged stuff.
