The first time I had Southern Tier Choklat I thought it was good, but a little underwhelming and too boozy. I put my other bottle of it away and decided to pop it tonight after letting it age for two years. The nose was just slightly oxidated with aromas of milk chocolate, tootsie rolls, and sticky molasses predominating. The flavor featured a lot of (unsurprisingly) chocolate, but a slight smokiness in the finish provided some balance. Suggestions of molasses, vanilla, and toffee lingered in the background. The 11% booziness has definitely died down in two years, but the brew is still very warming on its way down. Overall, I would say two years has improved the brew and it could probably benefit from even a few more years in the cellar.

Has anyone else experienced an aged Choklat recently?

My experience is a bit different. I think that Southern Tier Choklat is a relatively simple beer for starters. I'm not saying that I don't like it! Quite the contrary...I do like it although I recognize it for what it is - a lovely chocolatey flavor profile in a simple very drinkable brew. I have found that aging this one removes all of the lovely sweet and rich chocolate character that I particularly like, and gives it an oxidized bitter and flabby character that I don't like. I generally drink Southern Tier fresh to begin with, but especially the Choklat and other coffee/chocolatey/roasted grainy ones. JMO
