Can we agree that they are both good beers?

CBS was a disappointment to me because it was so sweet. IMO: Founders Imperial is the best of their stouts, with KBS second and FBS a very close third. CBS is good but overrated, again IMO.

kbs is a delight, perhaps one of my favorite coffee beers.

Haven't had this years KBS. But have always thought it was an amazing beer. CBS was very good too, but KBS just blew me away.

Is there really a bad imperial stout?

Living in Founders land, to me it goes:
    1. Founders Breakfast Stout (When fresh. If not, then 1 and 2 are reversed)
    2. Founders Imperial Stout
    3. KBS
    4. CBS Not sure if this is fair, because I only had CBS once and it was on tap. I had consumed so much other stuff at the "Black Party" that I couldn't really taste it much... :slight_frown:
    5. Founders Porter I tell you what, if you can't find any of these, their Porter is a great substitute! To me it's better than quite a few off brand Stouts that I've tried.
I just think some people love the taste of Bourbon, and some...not so much. So I truly think that's what makes people either LOVE or just LIKE KBS or really any other Bourbon barrel aged stouts.

+ 1 to Founders Porter- it is absolutely incredible and does not get the recognition it deserves. Best Porter out there. Completely blows edmund away imo- not even close.......

If you don't like KBS you should stay away from Bourbon barrels entirely. I'm not a Stout lover per say, but I absolutely love the bourbon barrel offers, Stouts/Porters/Brown Ales. This isn't directed at anyone just a general observation when I read too bourbon forward comments. . I picked up a JW Lee's Lavagulun Cask, and as I look at the ratings I can't help but think that there's Scotch lovers out there expecting something it's not. Islay Whiskey is a different animal, it's smokey out the ass, musty and peaty as hell. I know scotch lovers who hate Islay stuff, if you don't like Islay whiskey there's no hope in liking a barrel aged product.

Fresh Breakfast Stout is far superior to KBS. I agree with nc41, I am not a fan of Bourbon Barrel Aged beers. That is probably why I do not care for KBS. To each their own though.

Ah, but I love the bourbon barrel stuff, and I happen to like FBS a lot too, but generally I can take or leave most Stouts. Add a Bourbon barrel to most anything appropriate and I'm all over it.

I had both KBS for my first time and Bells Black Note not only this year but the same day on tap. I went in expecting not to like Black Note because for whatever reason I just don't like expedition stout or most things Bells makes. On the other hand I love everything Founders makes so I went in biased towards Founders being better. After having both, Black Note is easily the best beer I have ever had and KBS was good but to me was too smooth and low on flavor.

Have had KBS '11 and '12 and while it was still a damn good beer again this year, there seemd to be no coffee presence at all this year, while '11 fresh had a lot of coffee presence.

Guess all of the coffee went towards the barrel aged Sumatra Brown this year, which was fan-freaking-tastic :grinning: and yeah CBS doesn't hold a candle to KBS IMO.

I couldn't disagree more with this. I love FBS and find it to be far better than FBS. I love Bourbon Barrel aged beers. Parabola, 5050, Backwoods, Abacus/Sucaba, Firestone 15, Black Ops and yes CBS (prefer 2010 to 2011) - these are my favorite beers on the planet. Even in my local market, I can get Heresy, Insanity, Insidious, et al - I prefer them all to KBS.

Maybe my palette stinks, but I find KBS to just be too boozy for my taste. However, recommending that I should stay away from barrel aged beers is just poor advice. I'm glad people love KBS and I don't - it will make it that much greater when I give them to fans as extras.

Not sure how I missed this topic.

I had never had KBS prior to this year. I was able to secure two whole bottles in my area, one (looking back) I foolishly traded away, though the recipient loved it so that took the sting out. When I had my first sip of my one and only remaining bottle it was like a religious experience. What that beer did to my tongue is illegal in 38 states. Such richness, suck depth of flavors. I am salivating just thinking about it.

Easily my favorite beer, and I will do everything within my power to secure a case next year.

They were selling it here by the bottle at 10 bucks a pop. I'd stand on my head for a 4 pack, but this year KBS was an impossible get, and I'm on a call list. I missed Backwards Bastard which is also great stuff, I had a few on tap though.
