I've read a lot of opinions on cellaring FBS, but I'm still going to ask: I have the opportunity to purchase a case of cellared 2013 FBS. Should I?

Depends on who cellared, the price and how it was treated. If it was cellared properly and the case price is not ridiculous, go for it.

It would have to be a fairly substantial discount for me to do it. I love the strong coffee flavor in fresh FBS. It's still an above average stout with some age on it, but it's no where near as good as it is fresh.

I love FBS fresh too. But, I do cellar a few each year (2-4). It is fun to do side-by-sides to see how the beer changes over time, but I don't know that I could do a case worth of side-by-sides...

I don't cellar nothing! I've waited too long to get FBS and it's still kinda hard to find around here. If it crosses my threshold and into my house, it's gonna get drank! Who knows what the 'morrow may bring? My kids might like it at my wake, but they won't appreciate it near as much as I would NOW!

Luckily I have a few left as well, and I think they are drinking great. Fresh is incredible obviously, but it's still a smooth operator with a year on it.

If the price is right go for it. I reviewed it a few weeks back and found the coffee-ness intense. I only bought a four pack so I'm going to try a little cellaring (1-2 years maybe) and revisit them in six month intervals. I would have to adore a beer to buy a case and cellar it. Bell's Expedition anyone?

Do you have the chance to purchase fresh FBS? If so how much is the discount for 2013? You shouldn't review cellared FBS.

I enjoy it best around the 6-9 month mark where I perceive the coffee and chocolate to be balanced.

More appropriate for a different thread, but wouldn't it be great if the ratings also included a "freshness" category? IPAs 2 weeks old vs. 2 months old... Aged vs. fresh high ABV beers... It would be an additional piece of information that could add a lot of value to the community...

I always throw in bottles on dates when I can in reviews. It means a whole lot.

And as for FBS I would pick up a 2013 case for 40$ or less. Not a dollar more.

I fresh case is $60-$80 range. You think a cellared case should be that big a discount?

Actually a cellard case would go for 25$ here flat rate. I was trying to be optimistic. 25$ that's what I picked up my last case of Old Curmudgeon for.

Founders was going to put out breakfast stout for about 45$ a case then backed out so I don't think what I said is unrealistic at all.

and a fresh case is 63$ all day, not a penny more.

Straight from the brewers mouth this week on twitter they told me ALL their beer is made to drink now, not later

I wouldn't buy it if your intent is to cellar it longer. I would purchase it to drink now/soon if the price is not outrageous.

So, not really a cellared case, more of a case that didn't sell so they offered a discount. When I think cellared, I think someone that did it on purpose. No one cellars a case on purpose to sell it at a loss a year later.

Not selling and cellaring is the same thing.
