That's not my point. BB has been totally hyped up and lives to tell the tale. The mighty KBS, which is great, isn't the only beer of that caliber. Backwoods Bastard kicks ass.

It would be impossible to compare both of these brews since they come out at different times of the year. It would probably be more fair to save a bottle of BB and compare it to the fresh KBS when it comes out next year if you wanted to see what beer you liked better.

I can't say I've ever had another bbl aged scotch, so I can't compare.

Just finishing up my first one. Great brew and actually my first barrel-aged scotch ale.

Is it me or does barrel-aging suit this style much better than an imperial stout? The flavors of the barrel seem to complement the peat/smokiness really well.

I agree that bourbon barrel aging goes great with scotch ale cuz BB is so good. On the other hand I tried dragons milk (stout aged in bourbon barrels I think) a while back and didn't like it much. I have a big bad baptist on deck (stout aged in whiskey barrels) to further expand my experience with this style

I do agree with you but I don't get any peat or smokiness in most scotch ales that I try. I don't think its analogous to scotch whisky. To me scotch ale is about big, sweet, carmel, and toffee malts. And bourbon barrel aging goes great with those

I'm drinking my first one of the new batch and it is really not very good. It has a weird chemical aroma and taste. Also it is very thin and almost no bourbon. I'm about halfway through this glass but it may be a drain pour.
I bought 2 cases of this last year, it was great, and wish I bought more. I was only able to get two bottles this year. I really hope the other is not like this.

Sounds good to me. He probably got their BB.

Scotch ale refers to a style of beer from Scotland with almost no hops due to how difficult they were for the Scots to acquire.

And it will be for the entire season usually. It's always a 1, 4-pack limit for the first shipment at some places, and then it sits in the cooler, or shelves for the season that it's out, and has no limit.

Not everywhere. My three cases are long gone, along with the 7.75g keg I tapped last weekend.

So you aren't getting anymore for the remainder of the season?

I know near the south side of town, it stsill on shelves and it's always plentiful. Even Greens in the next month or so will have it sitting on the shelf and cases in the back to replenish.

Atleast they got to the point of putting it on the shelf. It's always kept back for the initial release at that store, and limits of one pack a person. So if it made it to the shelf with a sticker, they'll have more soon and no limits.

Yeah, few American Scotch ales have peat-smoked malt, and absolutely zero Scotch ales actually from Scotland do. Scots simply do not use peat-smoked malt in beer, at all. This is an American conceit.

12.99 out the door for a four pack because I'm friends with the owner and he waives tax and deposit. However the 19.99 I spent on BA Narwhal made up for any saved money. Ahhh well, at least I've got some world class brews.
