This BA vs NonBA thing is silly. Can someone from Surly verify so everyone isn't left guessing?

Btw- had regular darkness lastvweekend and looooved it!

They had a firkin of the dry hopped Darkness at Andy's liquor yesterday in Rochester. Free pours. Gotta appreciate the Surly love for down here. Rumor is Whistle Binkies was one of the first commercial accounts for Omar. The owner would drive up and fill up a van with Surly before they had a distributor down here.

Must love both parties for that, realizing the relationship.

I had both at Darkness Day (not plural). The one at Luce was BA.

There seems to be a lot of 'is this BA or non BA Darkness?' going on in this thread, and not a lot of 'this is where KarlHungus can find a glass of Darkness today with his lunch.'

Yes, but if we couldn't debate stupid nuances, this wouldn't be the internet, & people would get confused & start reading, or talking to each other, or something equally non-productive. Can you imagine the horror?

Anyone know if the Darkness @ Moose on Monroe is still flowing?

I know the keg at Pizza Luce last night kicked in a half hour...

When I called the Moose this morning, they said the keg had kicked.

I too got a pint of Darkness at Moose on Monroe's happy hour for $2. I couldn't believe it and even asked the bartender if she was sure it wasn't more. I would have posted this information yesterday, but I got there just a few minutes before happy hour ended and 6 p.m. and knew others wouldn't be able to get there in time to take advantage of the deal. I came here to post about the happy hour price now so people could take advantage of the deal today, but apparently I'm too late.

I haven't yet tried the High West rye whiskey barrel-aged Darkness, but I did have the non-barrel-aged 2014 Darkness dry-hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo from a cask at the brewery a couple months ago. I definitely got whiskey notes from the Moose on Monroe Darkness, but they were more bourbon than rye (more sweet, less spicy), and I didn't pick up any specifically oak or barrel char notes. I also got the same bourbon notes from the dry-hopped Darkness that definitely wasn't barrel aged. For that reason, plus the fact that an employee at Moose on Monroe told me it was not the barrel-aged version (although, as we've seen, there's a lot of confusion out there, so I took that claim with a grain of salt), I'm leaning toward believing that the Moose Darkness keg was not barrel-aged. I suspect the whiskey notes are from a combo of the sweetness, high alcohol content, and lack of age on the keg. But I definitely could be wrong.

All the talk of not knowing if it's BA or not really surprises me considering when I had them side by side at DD they tasted totally different. But I guess maybe they're a lot more similar than I thought. My friend thought it was the ba version.

For anyone who's had Eight, the High West barrel treatment has an incredibly strong echo in the BA Darkness. The barrel profile was instantly recognizable in the two beers & I'm looking forward to trying them side-by-side eventually.

Other than palate fatigue, I think it would be tough to mistake BA Darkness for non-BA Darkness.

And to keep on topic, I'm a bit surprised at the low amount of tappings so far. It might be faulty memory, but it seemed like Darkness was on tap constantly, & easy to grab, for weeks after the release last year (I know I drank my fill!).

I had the cask version of eight at the taproom last Thursday, and I agree, both that and BA Darkness are quite clearly BA. There is no doubt or hesitation about it. If there is doubt, my guess is it's the placebo affect, which I'm sure happens to all of us at some point, eh??
