I have a bottle I plan on opening up soon, and I'm just curious how people think this compares to the last batch. I feel that a side-by-side would be inappropriate here, since the old batches have had so much time to age. Thoughts?
Thoughts? Any comparison between this and the last batch would also be inappropriate here since people's sensory memory for flavors of when it was fresh have also had a long time to age (and become less clear, etc.) and our sensory memories are among the least reliable we have.
Sure, of course, but this is also a "Beer Talk" forum, not a "Beer Science" forum... so I say let's make some comparisons and talk about it. Plus, I'm always curious whenever a brewery re-releases a beer after a lengthy hiatus.
I really like that beer and I still do. I'm operating entirely on memory, but I don't think it has changed dramatically...if at all. Just very rich, malty, and warming, but without being overly hot. One of their better beers, IMO.
Not d'Extra specifically, but Fort, which was probably similarly priced was $15 at the brewery in 09.
I think it's between this and WWS for what is their best extreme beer. Though I haven't had Fort in years and remembered liking that one a bit. Hell I did have a whole bottle of it for New Year's a long while back, so I must have enjoyed it.
Picked up a bottle yesterday, not sure whether to age it for a while or drink it now. I might pick up another one to do both with.
To be honest, I don't know how much you would gain from aging this beer. It might be worth the expense of buying another bottle, but this beer is pretty darn good right now and the alcohol is quite subdued for something so high. I say you buy another and drink one now, worth it imo.
Got 2 bottles of this. I still haven't cracked one. My friend shared an 06 with me last year and it was incredible. That same friend recently told me he can't believe how good this years beer is fresh. (This is the first time he's drank dextra fresh) They need to take this year round I think....
