Just heard an explosion downstairs. Went down to find a bottle of 2014 Stone IRS had blown up. Over 800 other bottles down there, all fine. Bottle was stored upright in a bomber case at 58 degrees since purchase. The cap is still secure on the bottle. What could cause this? Glass Failure? Infection?

    Sorry for the horrible photos.

The way it blew out on the side, it is most likely a flaw in the bottle. Not a strongly carbonated beer, and it would need to be a pretty severe infection to increase bottle pressure in so little time.

Happens once in a while. Happened to a bottle of Port Brewing Wipeout once to me. Terrifying sound when you have no idea what it is.

Send that to Stone... you will probably get free IRS for life courtesy their legal department.

Having a hair over 200 bottles, I consider myself fortunate for never having had this happen.... yet. Sounds like it'd be a terrible mess if you didn't hear it happen and didn't respond until the flies cued you off days later.

Agreed on the point of hearing it. I had a growler blow the other day, and I never would have known if my wife hadn't gone into the garage and proclaimed "It smells like beer out here!"

Yeah, imperfections and striations in the glass sometimes happen and with the contents under pressure it can explode. Thank goodness the rest of your babies...ahem, bottles were okay. That's a real clean break and no fault of your own, I would contact Stone about it and see what they can do for you. I had this happen to me with an Alesmith BA Wee Heavy, but their customer service was awesome so I got a replacement immediately.

I was looking at a couple bottles today with a beer buyer and a bottle exploded right next to us. Bottom just blew out. Delicious thing to spill, beer.

That is very scary. Although I doubt it's a wide spread issue and I bet it was a flaw in the bottle, I would contact Stone just to give them a heads up.

You misread the label. It was actually a very rare UXB (UneXploded Bottle) of Stone IRA, not IRS.

    Sorry for your loss.

this happened to my bottle of Braaaaiins! imp pumpkin stout, just up and launched a foot in the air for no reason...damn it smelled so good on the floor though, was tempted to squeeze the Bounty towels into my tulip.

I deliver beer and I have seen this happen a few times. Bottles explode for no reason, usually a 32 or 40 ounce bottle. Someone told me that static can cause bottles to explode. I am not sure how true that is.

makes me wonder. i picked up a few bottles at Costco but noticed quite a few were sticky around the neck area. wasn't sure if there was failure from another IRS or other beer(s) or even a customer breaking something nearby.

In early April I was at the Ladera Ranch BevMo and an Enjoy By 4-20 popped on the shelf just a few feet away, sadly dying ahead of its time. The clerk next to said it had happened overnight as well with the same beer. Maybe just a bad batch of bottles got to Stone,

Funny I bought a bottle of IRS yesterday and thought it felt a little sticky too. Maybe more of these are blowing up and soaking the rest in transit.
