Yep. Rare will sell out immediately. Are there going to be kegs? I'd be curious to see how much they would charge for pours...

Does it come with a waxed cap as well?

I'm getting closer and closer to changing my mind about trying to get a bottle.

That's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. Utopias is a 750ml bottle of uncarbonated "beer" pushing 25-28% alcohol, and can be re-capped and enjoyed over the course of several weeks or months like a bottle of spirits. Rare is a $60 pint of 13% (give or take) beer that pretty much has to be consumed in one day.

It'd be better if it came in a waxed box.

I'm ok dropping $30-$35 on Ale Apothecary stuff in a 750ml. I'm not ok with $60 on a 16.9 oz bottle, AB-InBev or not.

Do price gouging laws not apply to the beer industry? Just kidding.

An apples to oranges comparison would be a reasonable criticism to make if I was comparing BCR to a bottle of single malt or small batch bourbon (or so I would argue). I understand the differences in how the two are made, but in both instances, we're talking about an extremely expensive, extremely limited, and apparently, extremely desired bottle of "beer."

Both beers are perceived to be quite delicious by those who covet them, which of course is part of the reason they're so expensive. However, there are plenty of beers that sell for far less money and are seen as every bit as delicious, yet command a fraction of the cost of Rare or Utopias.

What supposedly justifies the price in both these beers, is the fact they are quite limited/rare, are hard to obtain (no matter how much money you have and/or are willing to spend), and the expense that goes into making them (in the case of rare, the cost of the Van Pappy barrels, and in the case of the Utopias, the time and cost of making the beer and bringing it up to the high abv.). In both cases, however, I would argue that the cost of the beer doesn't come close to the cost of making it, and so it would appear that other factors are in play when it comes to the fancy price tag both beers command. Yet despite what appears to be an excessive premium for both beers, neither Samuel Adams or InBev-Ab have any difficulty selling these beers as fast as they can get them off the truck.

At least in my opinion, the comparison is therefore quite apt.

Insert standard argument: Beer is a luxury item, so it can't be gouging as long as there are people willing to pay the amount. I don't think Rare will have any problem selling out, even at $60 for a bottle that wouldn't fill an imperial pint glass.

Look, I have had the Rare that came out in the past. and while delicious, the standard BCBS is pretty damn close.

Felt the same way about the Barley wines. King Henry is fantastic, but the standard BC barley wine is 95% there

That beer was so damn good. No way was I going to let any of that delicious nectar go to waste!

Beer Junction will have Rare on tap next Wednesday. Can't imagine how much it will cost.

I think tap prices are not going to be that bad (or not equivalent to bottle prices). They are basically giving the stuff away on tap at events like FOBAB. I think they will want to get people hooked on a taste of it so you do seek out a bottle. I read somewhere that they estimated it cost $11 a bottle to make rare (including packaging). You are probably still looking at $10-15 per 6 oz glass, which I would probably pay just to taste the hype.

Sorry guys miscommunication on the Rare draft. There was a mix up at the distributor- they meant we'll be getting the Regal Rye version (http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1146/184027/). As far as I've heard, no Rare draft was being sent out.

So in summary, assuming there's no shipping mishaps, we should have the following on draft and bottles

On draft Wednesday 11/25 at 5PM: Regular, Barleywine, and Regal Rye
On draft Friday 11/27 at 11AM: Coffee (also the start of our Coffee & Stout Fest).

Available in bottles Friday 11/27 at 11AM: Regular, Rare, Coffee, Barleywine, and Regal Rye.

Bummer on the draft but it's fantastic that you're getting the full bottle lineup. Any insight on if you'll be getting just a handful of Rare bottles, or will it be larger?

Very small amount of Rare-- it will be limit 1 bottle per person.

Coffee, Barleywine, and Regal Rye will also likely be 1 bottle per person.

The Regular we should get a little more of, so likely a slightly higher bottle limit. We'll post more details next week on our Facebook & Twitter Pages.

Beer should be judged by how you like it, now how much others want it. So much the better for craft beer drinkers if nonhyped beers stick around for the taking. Crowds will always follow crowds.
