damn its gotten pretty hostile in here.

    Just drink a beer!

Oh and it was 69.99/bottle for rare at LP Binny's. I bought one plus the couple in front of me offered theirs to anyone around us and no one jumped on it....so I ended up with 3 Rares.

Decided to poke around a bit for another regular or 2 now that I'm back home and in-laws have left town. Usually some of the smaller liquor stores or grocery stores have a bit a few days after. Appears to be all dry by me, which surprised me, sort of. Some places that got last year got nothing, at least that was their story. Decided to check with Binny's to be thorough. Low and behold they were still holding. Grabbed a few more. All the regular I got in the south 'burbs were the 14.5%, the ones I scored downstate were the 13.8%.

Semi-related, drank a '16 BW last night. Pretty great as expected, but definitely a different beast coming from the single use barrels. I'm going to save my other and put a year on it or so.

Drinking it at Fulton tap right now, it's much better than I remember.

Would agree the BW didn't quite have the same quality to it as in years past. Not sure what it was, definitely tasted a bit less complex and a bit more thin than ones I remember having.

I agree. With the exception of '15, I thought '13 and '14 were excellent and quite complex. They did taste more 'stouty' than a barleywine so that may have something to do with my preference for those years. Complexity thing may have to do with the fact that for '16, they were 2nd use barrels and not 3rd like in the past.

Part of the BC allure is that it's reasonably priced yearly release that people actually have to get off their ass and do some work to get their hands on it instead of casually strolling into a liquor store any day of the year and buy it. Over priced beer sitting and gathering dust is not a great marketing strategy.

If GI were to set mrsp of coffee at $30 or even $20 and would be something they could get away with, what's holding them back in your opinion?

3 different stores around me all $20 for regular bcbs. Is this the new norm? geesh easy pass at that price.

Picked up 1 regular and 1 barleywine. Extremely excited about the barleywine being aged in 2nd use barrels. Never was a big fan of the previous vintages. Going to open my bottle tomorrow!

I'm just curious, I've spent close to $35 on a bottle, but is rare worth the $70 bucks, not knocking you for buying but just curious, is it really worth 5 to 6 bottles of regular? I know it was hard to justify the $35 I've spent so like I said just curious

I just had it for the first time on black friday at a GI Tasting event and I really liked it. This was after I bought the 3 bottles, but I thought it had tons of bourbon flavor without the burn. It also had a very creamy feeling and the chocolate was very present.

After tasting it, I am glad for the couple in front of me and that I actually pulled the trigger for 3 bottles for $210!!!

Enjoy. Up here in Manty there were allocations for the specials-Barleywine & Coffee Stout. They were however priced the same as the regular. If they had not been it would have been a pass for me.

The hype is incredible and at $9.49 per btl. OK maybe once a year.

Totally depends on your situation. If I had never had it before, then yes, it would be worth it. I have had 2015 Rare many times now and have multiple bottles at home, so it is not worth $70 to me now (I passed on buying this weekend and probably would have even if the price was $60 like last year). Had Rare again this BF and prefer the 2016 Regular, so no question I would take 6 bottles of regular instead or 13 if you bought at Jewel :grinning:

Yep - in MI that is the norm at a lot of places. That's why I drove Binnys LP and got plenty for MSRP. Screw these gouging party store owners in SE MI.

With gas money, isn't this a poor financial decision?

For the record, I have no problem paying up / travelling for exceptional beer, but if you're price conscious I think paying extra & not driving to Chicago and back would actually be cheaper.

Didn't see that price, but here in Wayne county, u had to buy a goose island product to buy either a Stout or barleywine
